Dude. I've been a guitarist for metal bands my whole life. I'm 60 now and my son asked me if I knew this song. I came here looking for answers. Thank you. I've never owned a capo in my life. Now I do. I even bought him one. You made my job as dad guitar teacher so much easier.
Ron, I played this song in 1984 pretty well with descent vocals. So excellent to swoon young drunken woman. Got busy in life for many years, married with children, and finally returned looking for shapely sixty year women to play this song for. I just need to be thankful and make sure this guy gets some money from me. Great lesson it's worth a $50.00 to me.
I've watched a bunch of guitar guys on RUclips and man... You're my favorite! Thank you so much for all of these videos.
One of my favorites to listen to and play!
one of my favourite songs. really surprised to see it come up. fantastic, cheers.
Glad you dig it!
Great instructions... Love this song!
1988 band from Australia! Great new technique for this song! Beautiful tune
thanks heaps! this is a song uve wanted to play for a while, and none of the other tutorials sounded right. great work!
Nice job! I figured this song out by ear from listening to the cassette a zillion times. Got the chords right too. Never knew it was capo on the 5th fret, bingo! Thanks again!
They use 2 guitars, one with capo and one without
Thank you for sharing this! I’ve seen so many different guitar lessons for this song, and this is the first that sounds like the original.
You're very welcome!🙏
OK, that's just satisfying to play! Thank you, Erich!
Wow.. That was too easy, thank you for sharing. I can’t believe it’s been out 30 years now.
great video Erich !!! Thank U, it's one of my favs songs
one of my favourite songs. really surprised to see it come up. fantastic, cheers.
I use to play these simple cords over and over... the guys in my shop hated it.
great video Erich !!! Thank U, it's one of my favs songs
You are VERY welcome Jorge!
Thanks !!!
You made it easy, thanks!
Thanks Erich, I’m a newbie but with your tutorial now I can play this awesome song!
Could you prepare a tutorial to play acoustic version of See the Lights by Simple Minds, please?
Thanks a lot!
It's actually two guitars panned left and right. Left channel is in open position, Am, Asus4, Fmaj7, G. The right channel is as Guitar Sage describes.
Killer tune! Thanks!
Thanks Eric. I did a search to learn how to play this song... I'm doing a trance cover of it. Small world. Love what you r doing and what you've built. Very cool you're a good teacher and a talented player. Great to see that there are still some of us doing music. 😃
Thank you brotha! I appreciate you and Bev too. We would hang if we were in the same town. Please send me a link when you are finished recording. Would love to hear it. Have you got into Ratatat? Check out Classics. KILLER instrumental music.
Hey Eric, really enjoy learning from you....
thanks! I love that song!!! Saludos desde Chile (Sudamérica) !!!
Greetings from Australia...The Church were a brilliant band live..saw them many times in the 80's..they had a pretty big following here..Check out their other music, it is trippy..cannot recommend highly enough..tw
Thanks,friend...Great!
LOVE this song man ... thank you for dumbing it down for us =oP . Sounded great, beautiful piece.
Wow.. That was too easy, thank you for sharing. I can’t believe it’s been out 30 years now.
It sounds so much better on a 12-string as originally recorded ....
One of my favorite songs.
Ive always liked this song. The Guitar and Bass are awesome
I think so too!
*Love this video-tutorial Erich :) well done :)*
Thank you Leari!
It is a great peaceful song. Thanks a lot for the lesson. I'm no Dc. but the way you were playing it made me think you had a bad day. Those strings were suffering.
One of my top covers at Open Mics. I learned it from this lesson years ago. I got me $20.00 in my guitar case back in 2017 from a young lady while playing on the Wildwood, New Jersey Boardwalk. Evertime I play it, I think of that. It really sounds great on a 12 string! Yes, Eric, I am still around. I have my first paid gig on March 25th.
I love that, Kelly! Good to see you again, my friend.
Finally someone who has cracked the case and played Under The Milky Way to sound exactly like the recording. Thank you!
You're welcome!
Nice explanation. Have you considered doing one for the second guitar, played without capo in the first position?
I've watched your RUclips Videos for years and listened to what I call your once in awhile guitar giveaways. Incidentally not to get the guitar but your skill at teaching. Today I'm going to purchase some of your song lessons and hopefully become a participating member of YourGuitarSage.
This strumming pattern has been p*ssing me right off to figure out! Even slowing it down to like 50bpm to get my head around it.
Thank you for sharing and featuring Australian music. Just a beginner here, off to get a capo.
LOVE this song man ... thank you for dumbing it down for us =oP . Sounded great, beautiful piece.
The Church doesn’t even play it right anymore 😆
Can you please do a lesson for the song "Metropolis" by The Church. It's an awesome song!
many thank you's
LOVE this song man ... thank you for dumbing it down for us =oP . Sounded great, beautiful piece.
That gnat at 2:36 is living on borrowed time. The Sage don't tolerate no gnat. Crazy look.
finally someone plays this properlly. THanks!
🙏
Hi Erich could you do a lesson of the song Fadeaway by the bodeans. cheers good luck
thank you very much legend
any time!
Thats the part!!! Well thats the 12 string part. There's an 6 string acoustic track playing the Open Chords, then a Strat playing the lines. It's a brilliant arrangement and you taught it well!!
🙏
That gnat at 2:36 is living on borrowed time. The Sage don't tolerate no gnat. Crazy look.
one of my favourite songs. really surprised to see it come up. fantastic, cheers.
Great stuff Erich! Love your work! Will you have any Christmas specials on lifetime access to your Unstoppable Guitar System? Thanks!
Probably! Keep your eyes peeled :)
Classic from the 80s.. And Miami vice.. Those were the days.. I'll start playing on capo.. Never knew
Listened to song very closely and I don’t hear the 7th note on the b string in the Em chord form. I’m pretty sure the only change is by dropping the octave note to a 7th on the D string.
What about chord voicings without a capo ? As an alternate.
without capo.... Am, f, g SAME. I mute low E with right hand also. I need my left thumb behind the neck.
Thanks for this!
I’ve always loved the song, and in particular the sound of the acoustic guitar, but for all these years, I wasn’t sure if the sound of the guitar was maybe the result of two 6 string acoustics being layered in the studio, or if Nashville tuning was being used…
It never occurred to me that a CAPO was used, which was REALLY stupid of me, in that I use a friggin’ capo all the time…🙄 (yeah, I’m an idiot).
Thanks for clearing this up!
Thanks again. 😉🙏
You're very welcome! well, I did not dig that deep into the tune to know exactly how they recorded it. I just wanted folks to have a quick, easy way to play the tune, but it sounds like one of the guitar parts. I think it was a 12 string, however. Beautiful tune.
@@yourguitarsage I think you’re spot-on with the capo on the 5th fret.
It’s possible that on the original recording, that they recorded and layered two acoustics (both capo’d and played the same way you demonstrated), in the mix, (and I’m pretty sure there’s a hint of chorus added as well, not to mention the obvious amount of reverb as well, as there was a LOT of reverb being used in mixes in the 80’s, on, well…pretty much everything, LOL), but the guitar part itself is what I was most interested in, and I think you nailed it. 😉
Thanks again. 🙏
Wow. You teaching an old Aussie band :)
Great. ..
I didn't know the Church had a following outside of Australia?? They were a cool semi-underground band that i used to see in the 80s..they weren't that well known even in Australia. Just checked on wikipedia, and they don't really have a following..just this song has been licenced out over the years. Donnie darko and US advertisements. Just been learning ur stray cats strut solo :) Subscribed..theres lots of cool stuff here..cheers
Yeah man! The Church is a super cool band. Glad you're diggin it.
raindogred they actually had a strong underground following in the USA, fantastic band
yeah good music is good music and it eventually finds its way to those "in the know" wherever they are in the world i geuss ..cheers
I believe it!
I don't know how big they were but I know I loved this song in highschool in the 80's in a small town in Canada. Before the internet music spread more organically. A friend would visit Sydney and bring an album home and play it at a party.
Great main chord progression reminds me of crowded house...your top E string was painful
I love you music ❤💚💜💙💛
That's perfect for the first verse. Verses 2, 3 and 4 have the distinctive baseline played with capo#5: Em- Em/G#-Cmaj7-E7sus4 add 9
This song is comprised of several guitars.
There's a chord missing in the verse which is very distinctive. I'll get back to this when I find it
Cool lesson dude! But if you were capoed on the 5th fret playing an open Em chord, doesn't that make it an Am chord? The CM7 becomes FM7 and D becomes G? I've watched the video several times and saw the guitarist playing an open Am at the start of the song. Although, it sounds more correct with the capo on the 5th fret. Maybe the band doesn't want to give a full reveal on how to really play it? In any case, great lesson. 😊
I know this is a huge necropost, but YT showed a link to The Church playing this live, and the guitarist is playing around the 5th fret. Very interesting. "The Church Under The Milky Way ARIA Hall of Fame 2010"
Whenever someone hits the "thumbs down" button on someone who is teaching a lesson, then you know they are a moron. And probably aren't even able to play any song all the way through. But anyway, thank you for teaching the song.
cmartin1959 those people suck
Good guitar player, good voice, ur stressin me out man🤭
TY! Yes, all the other videos I’ve seen are wrong
👍🙏
It sounds so much better on a 12-string as originally recorded ....
Without capo Am, Am7, Fmaj7, Gmaj. The Gmaj becomes E minor after the first 4 bars, for the rest of the song. Refrain G maj, Fmaj7, bagpipe(?) solo C, G, Am, 4 times
fantastico thank you
There are two acoustic guitars being played in this song by The Church. The main guitar is a 12-string, and the second, or ‘accompanying’ guitar is a 6-string playing with a capo on the 5th fret, playing the same cords you are in this video. While your cords and capo placement appear to be correct, it sounds exactly like the accompanying guitar in the recorded version and not as ‘full’ or complete, like the main guitar, which is played in standard tuning without a capo.
I guess what I’m trying to point out is that if someone was interested in learning how to play the second guitar in the song, they should use the lesson you’ve posted here. However, if someone was interested in learning how to play the song and sing along, or just wanted a fuller/better sounding instrumental version, they should check out one of the other lessons on YT that show how to play the song in first position without a capo.
Also, I agree with the comment below about how your lesson(s) could be more succinct. When you serve up too much word salad before the main course/lesson, viewers are gonna bail. Minimize running your soup cooler about where you got your capo, or the other nonsense unrelated to learning how to play the song, and get to the meat and potatoes.
I count and down up down at the same time. It works well for me. The first strum you did -
dd dud uud dudu.
I like your rhythm pattern. I'm just learning this on the ukulele.
Very underated Aussie band that where part of the aussie music scene back in the late 80's.
Never made as big as they should of.
great! it's the way Marty plays it, the difference is that he uses a 12 string guitar. that aside, this is just great. thank you, very much.
Cool, thanks!
Do you know the chords WITHOUT A CAPO?
Am asus4 fmaj7 g
Chorus g f
Middle C G am7 fmaj7
That gnat at 2:36 is living on borrowed time. The Sage don't tolerate no gnat. Crazy look.
Yeah I think this is played on a 12 string and when the sing starts, the first chord is a minor and then the second is a minor with an f sharp bass note.
👍
Dude-you coulda done this entire lesson in 2 minutes in stead of 8...I kept yelling "Jeez just play the song". You don't need to tell me where to get a capo.
True of many RUclips lessons.
Yeah i agree. Just fucking play and stop trying to act fuckin cute!!
There are plenty of other people to watch. If you still have this awful fucking attidue, I hope you stayed away for this long.
Dude takes his time to teach us a lesson for free and you complain about it being 4 minutes longer than what you would like!! Good lord man
You gotta remember. Beginners are watching this, and not everyone learns the same way.
link is broken to chord chart
Good lesson for an alternate tuning, however if you actually watch the official video, he's playing Am, Asus4, Fmaj7, G in the intro, then changes the G to an Em when the rest of the band kicks in. Don't take my word for it, here's the video:
ruclips.net/video/pWxJEIz7sSA/видео.html
I don't play guitar (at all).
I just love watching this kind of stuff and of course I LOVE this song.
Thank you for watching none-the-less. You know I can fix that part about not playing guitar, right? :)
@@yourguitarsage I sincerely doubt it....cant teach an old dog new tricks. Thanks for the persona reply!!
This is a sure sign you should play guitar. Most inspiring thing i ever heard was a little news article a few years ago, a 98 year old lady started learning violin because she wanted to play the Blue Danube on her 100th birthday. Let that sink in for a minute!
@@MrDblStop Now I just feel ashamed! Thanks for the (baby) guilt trip. Kidding 🎸🎻🎵🎶🎻
@@mbear1639 Go for it! All I wanted to be able to do when I started learning was to strum a few chords and play along to simple songs. It only took a few months to get to that stage, and I did go on to learn other stuff, but sometimes just playing a few 'cowboy chords' and singing simple songs is all I need. Like Milky Way for example, it's very simple. It's good for relaxation, good for your emotional and mental health. And keeps the brain sharp. And chicks dig it (even at my advancing age!) :-)
A little earth type buzz/ hum there I think?
The Church doesn’t even play it right anymore 😆
Great instructions... Love this song!
LOVE this song man ... thank you for dumbing it down for us =oP . Sounded great, beautiful piece.
You’re very close buddy, but the Em7 has one note different. Drop your ring finger to 2nd fret G string, not D string and you have it spot on. Found it on another vid and it’s perfect!
That would make an Esus chord?
Wrong
What’s the tuning
Standard tuning.
The Church doesn’t even play it right anymore 😆
LOVE this song man ... thank you for dumbing it down for us =oP . Sounded great, beautiful piece.
I'm really hoping you're not gonna miss out that crucial chord.
When the bass and keyboard come in, the 2nd chord is different for the rest of the song. Otherwise, you’ll clash with the bass player.
Don't forget the Underground Lovers .
Cool arrangement but it’s played on a 12 string with no capo and basic chords
should be open, no capo. Am, Asus4, Fmaj7, G
The guys in the band play it correctly as does the intro on this very video... but it is in a minor, not e minor.
Indeed you are correct. Most guitarists will name the chords as they "feel" on the fretboard while using a capo and teaching a song. YES, if you are working with other musicians however, it would be important to do denote how the capo changes the keys of the chords. Does that make sense. Technically it's in the key of A minor, but with the capo we call that chord in E minor. Otherwise it makes for a very clumsy video. Thanks friend!
YourGuitarSage Oops, thanks!
Stupid question: isn't what you are calling an "Em" chord actually an Am chord after you capo up?
Yes, the capo changes all the chords technically.
Calling it a Em is easier to understand
I think the reason people don't get it right tis it's actually played on a 12 string
Brett Williams It’s played on 2 guitars simultaneously........one guitar in the open position and one with a capo on the fifth fret. If you use a looper you can make it sound just like the record. 5th fret capo verse shapes are as per this video Em/Em7- Cmaj7 -D. Open position verse shapes are Am/Am7 - Fmaj7 - G .....with embellishments.
Ibsawchim play on video and it was a minor... And sussed
Almost spot on. That last open chord is not a G, it's an Em & Em with a high G (022003). It blends the gap between the capo guitar and the bass that's playing A/F#/F/E.
Does anyone else see/hear this? Agree?
Yup!
Sort of condescending but I appreciate the lesson.
Wasn't very enjoyable aye
Its a 12 string song
el weon bueno pa hablar por la cresta weon
The Church doesn’t even play it right anymore 😆
😂
Actually... they never did. And... I can't explain how I know this.
I saw them two nights ago in Bristol, and Ian Haug (who I will always think of as 'not-Marty', sorry Ian :-)) absolutely nailed it. It was hard enough seeing them in 89 (I think) after RIchard Ploog left, I couldn't imagine what it would be like seeing them without Marty, but Ian was fantastic.
1988.
But he's not playing it with a capo in the video
Indeed he is not in the video.
ah but he does use a capo live: ruclips.net/video/b8sTa95rJmQ/видео.html In the 80's music videos were lip synced to the original music track, not played live.
You can tell by the sound of the guitar there's s capo on 5th.
1988
👍
in the video the guitar player tricks us. he doesnt k po the 5th fret. lol. to fool everyone
There are two guitars playing on the track. You can play it with or without the capo. 👍
Mid 80s
Drives me nuts when someone plays a guitar that is out of tune.
Either that or the intonation on his guitar is shitty.
Wonder how he can stand playing it.
Other than that, informative and well done.
You're right.....definitely out of tune....lol
If I had hair, I'd have it styled like yours! :)
marry me
Awww! So sweet. Thank you Kimberly. OKAY! :)
Whew- Awesome. I will cook us amazing food and I'll keep the house just the way you like it and I'll bring you a cold beer anytime you want- all you have to do is smile and play the guitar for me every so often
Kimberly Lea .....with all that to offer a feller...why aren't you already hitched??
Jesus Christ
SO..... everyone is wrong, tabs are wrong... BUT.... you have your own interpretation ? so yours is likely WRONG TOO... just sayin.....
First make yourself clear about the chords and then put them in the video, mate
