i've had depression for the past ten years and when i heard this song it really spoke to me. might just be the beat but it helped give me a push to start going to therapy.

To those saying that the lyrics suck: there are many people who have the felt the way Jack did in this song, myself included. It's a really rough time when your surrounding peers have high expectations and you feel like you can't meet them and then they become disappointed in you. Then you become disappointed in yourself. I am very proud of Jack for starting his solo project. In my opinion, this song is brilliant. Congrats, Jack.

If you can, consider a psychiatrist. Therapy didn't really help me, but the diagnosis the psychiatrist gave me allowed me to figure out what I needed to do to get better. For me, it was take Lexapro. I'm not sure what you are struggling with, but I hope you get better too.

Try small, random things, like things you wouldn't normally clean, like a stove, and get try talking to a therapist like in the original music video

The song is clearly a journey for him and his mind. He learned a lot about himself. At the beginning he's screaming at the cars that he wants to get better (blaming others for problems). By the end, he's screaming at himself, realizing he has to help himself get better.
The acid test is him taking acid but having a bad experience.

This song brought a smile to my face because I've been telling myself, "I want to get better" for the past month. Thoughts can be evil, but fortunately we have a thing called music to help bring some sense back into our brains.

It's crazy to me that such a phenomenal song has been out a few *years* and I'm only now just finding it. Goes to show how many beautiful songs we can miss out on, I'll always be in search from now on.
I think everyone can probably relate to this song in their own way. I got really depressed from a series of things that have happened in my life. I was denying that I was depressed, but my partner encouraged me to get help. I went to a psychiatrist and I'm on Lexapro now. It's given me the strength I needed to get better. :) Not only has it helped me, but it's improved my relationships. The first step is accepting that you have a problem.

I thought this song was about him committing suicide and only regretting it after the fact. "I hear the voice of the preacher from the back room calling my name and i follow just to find you" the preacher is calling his name because it's his funeral. "And i've trained myself to give up on the past and i froze in time between hearses and caskets." implying that he's a ghost, looking on at his funeral procession. "So i put a bullet where i should've put a helmet, and i crashed my car cause i wanna get carried away, that's why i'm standing on the overpass screaming at myself" again, talking about suicide, he's screaming at himself because he doesn't regret it until its actually done. "i didn't know i was lonely til i saw your face" could be the face of god. "I didn't know i was broken til i wanted to change. i wanna get better." he didn't know what he had until he gave it up; he didn't want to get better until it was too late and now he does. idk just my 2 cents.

"I wanna get better" is how one feels when they are caught up in the daily grind of just feeling like shit..... Putting all of our disappointments, let downs, and failures, taking our loved ones struggles personally & letting their pain become ours, taking everything to heart.... If you have ever been there, only then would YOU know what I am talking about.... "I WANT TO GET BETTER!!" is how we all want to feel like when we are down & out. LOVE this song! ;)
This song is so different from typical pop songs that are repetitive. It's kind of all over the place which fits exactly what he's trying to say. I love it.
I love that Jack Antonoff submerges himself in water in this video because the song and the image work perfectly together to convey the full meaning of the song. Antonoff, a Jew, would be very familiar with the rite of baptism, and I wouldn't be surprised that he deliberately uses the image of baptism, signifying purification or consecration, to express the song's theme of recognizing how lost we become when we forsake a love for that which is good and pure, for worldly addictions that fail to satisfy and leaves our bodies and relationships broken, in need of spiritual renewal. Repenting of that is the first step in "getting better" and the song absolutely conveys that.
