Biden had a weeks rest, ample time to prepare and all the conditions requested for the debate.

I think the party was well aware how bad Biden was too, and manipulated for an early debate to force the issue before it was too late. You can't blame Biden to keep doubling down on what has worked so far. Biden has been gaffing mindless gibberish all along and nothing came of it.
