- Repairing a Sony MDS JB940 minidisc recorder to resell. Although I got it for a good price, it wasn’t working when first turning it on, was making strange noises and had a disc stuck in the machine.
Turned out it was the belt for the eject mechanism that needed replacing. A very common issue with these machines.
Here is a link to a quality replacement:

I just bought a MDS-JE440 for $8! It gave me a C13 error but wasn't taking the disc. When I "helped" the disc into the deck it PLAYED!! But wouldn't eject.. So I guess I need to replace the belt. Thanks for the video I have pinned it and will be following along to breathe new life into my "new" deck. Hopefully the old belt hasn't turned into a black oozy slurry.
Sounds to me like a belt issue for sure. While you’re there you may as well give the laser a quick clean.
$8 is a bargain! Worst case, if you can’t get it working…. it’s probably worth $30 spares or repairs on eBay so you can’t lose :-). Let me know how you get on!
Thank you, great video. I’ll keep it for future use.
Thanks. I'm hoping to be able to repair mine - exact same deck and exact same problem. Somebody on here said why bother ? I love the sound of my minidiscs and love this deck so am really hoping I can fix it.
Isopropol alcohol is available almost anywhere and easily cleans all the rubber belt goo off. Anyway, that's what I use.
The rule of thumb is: Use grease for items that slide against one another and oil for things that spin. That's what I learned and that's what I do.
Lovely deck
With original belt size inserting and ejecting disc is much faster!! This mechanism is extremely sensitive for belt size.
My belt had turned into a sticky black mess. Got it all over my fingers. Methylated Spirits helped to clean it. The large pulley can be removed by undoing its screw. Then toothbrush, stiff artists brush and 15 minutes labour cleaned it up. Then proceeded to fit new belt as described here.
Yes sticky belts are the worst! I use isopropyl alcohol ( 99.9 %) but Methylated spirits/ Denatured alcohol also work. Toothbrush is a tool I use everyday for hifi cleaning!
Glad you got it working again
So helpfull
Did you know if the disc won’t eject, you can turn it upside down to counteract gravity and it will usually succeed.
I had heard that and you’re right it does work sometimes!
Iv broken 2 now trying to replace the rubber band on Sony long play mini disc players im gutted i have hundreds of mini discs to play and i can't use any mini disc as most my stuff is recorded on long play 20 years ago like a idiot 😢
Absolute junk!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Mini Disc in 2024 is pointless!! 🗑️
can you put the belt size in the description - I'm guessing it's a 20 mm belt needed in this?
Hi! I don’t know the exact belt size
off the top of my head ….but 20mm sounds about right!
I usually always order Decktech belts from eBay. They are very reasonably priced and excellent quality. Currently, they do not sell one for this unit so here is a good alternative :
