    Hey Jack,
    You should do a follow up video on how to escape and evade your wife when she wakes up late at night and finds you sitting at the kitchen table at 2:30 am with a Pepsi bottle on your face........good thing I've learned some survival shelters for when she kicks me out for being crazy she doesn't quite get the whole preparedness lifestyle haha..........

      Brendan420 I don't mean to be rude, or anything like that. But I never understood why people don't like the idea of being prepared. I believe it's because we haven't seen some craziness to make is want to prep.

    used to make these in the paint shop,you might wanna put duct top on the seam inside of the can and cotton,if not when you're running it'll get all out of place,just put it around the seam of the cotton and can to make a seal/stopper

  • @wjf213

    For and emergency type filter against CS and to get you home to your real gear, this would work pretty well I think. I'm just wondering how quickly the inside would fog up from breathing? It might be a good idea to wipe the inside with some sort of anti fogging agent, or spit, shaving cream, baby shampoo or whatever, since there's no way to really vent the moisture out from breathing. Keep up the great work.

    • @webtoedman
      @webtoedman 8 лет назад +1

      +wjf213 Try a soft plastic pipe screwed down into the bottle neck - held in the mouth it will direct breath out of the mask, but it may be necessary to use a nose clip. Commercial units have a one way valve made out of very thin rubber sheet.

      To not fog up the inside of the mask, you can use inhalers and exhalers holes! A special holes with rubber cirles on them to control where the air will come in and where it will come out. This will also help to save filter for longer time periods, since moistured activated charcoal won't filter most of things.

    The only drawback I see is getting a proper seal around the face. This is why the military went to a "No beard" stance. I have a 3M 6800 series full face with Magenta and black cartridges (organic dusts mists fumes and vapors). The mask will run about $125 and a pair of cartridges about $20. Once opened, the cartridges are only good for about 8-10 hours. ALL filters have a shelf and working life, regardless of who made it.
    Beyond that, this was a GREAT tutorial for an immediate threat situation. Now my nephew wants to build one. Activated carbon now on order for him!

    If you really need a gas mask, just get one. You can find 40mm nato surplus fairly cheaply. This should only be used in an emergency and you have nothing else... (and just because it's surplus dosen't mean its bad and wont work. If it has a seal and a filter it will work fine!)

  • @stolasgoetia93
    @stolasgoetia93 8 лет назад +3

    I'm actually going to give this a try pretty soon but I think I'm going to try and use ranger bands instead of regular rubber bands since rangers tend to be more heavy duty, though that is just my opinion and I very well could be wrong.

  • @iamprogress6862
    @iamprogress6862 4 года назад +1

    This is good info. It's good to see that you use activated charcoal. I would go a step further to overkill the filter by using a 0.3 - 0.1 micron filter material instead of the round cotton. The only other thing that's crucial for COVID-19 protection is an airtight seal. Instead of using the duct tape around the edges of the bottle, I would superglue strips of butyl rubber to create the airtight seal needed.

  • @teatowel11
    @teatowel11 7 лет назад +1

    Just a thought to improve this rig.
    You are increasing the resistance against breathing with the cotton and charcoal, so unless you get a good seal then most of the air will be drawn in around the mask.
    Most people have access to condoms. If you wear the mask and then put a condom over the top (like you see idiots joking around) it will create a good seal.

    for those with long hair, you know what running a rubber band in your hair is like. so you can take a sports shoe lace and cut the ends off find the center tube section of the lace. now run a wire through the tube formed in the lace. pull the rubber band through the lace with the wire. then tie it off into the mask as you would otherwise. and it good for short hair too. if you wear a ball cap, spin it with the bill in back and pull the rubber band over using the bill as a stop and provided tension keeps the mask tight to the chin. but people with beard need a hoodie put on the mask then you can tie hoodie off making a seal around the neck. much like the "Nuke.Bio.Chem," head wrapping outfit when i was in the army.

  • @SlimbTheSlime
    @SlimbTheSlime Год назад

    A few things: How do you know you have a good seal if the mask terminates on your facial hair? Are the rubber band holes going to compromise the seal? Wouldn’t it be easier to make a mouth-only system out of a Dr Prepper bottle with your lips sealed around the top, a cotton/carbon/cotton assembly in the middle, and a few holes punched out the bottom? Why not do that and pair it up with some swimming goggles and ordinary nose plugs?

  • @Fuzzy2u
    @Fuzzy2u 8 лет назад

      I added on to this design and made interchangeable filters using leftover soda caps and empty tuna cans. I used 2 cloth patches in the bottom, then a layer about .5 - .75 inches deep of charcoal, then layered cloth patch, gauze, cotton ball/ stuffing, gauze, cloth patch. I had a different design but the one I mentioned works a lot better. I used hot glue to keep the filter together, poked holes in the soda cap, top, and bottom of the tuna can for ventilation. Hope this helps, as charcoal will eventually get clogged and it is better to have the ability to just change filters than get a whole new mask.
