I attended this show in Oakland and video simply cannot do it justice. It filled my soul from so many directions - I danced, I laughed, and I even cried. Fever Ray is the biggest visionary in music today.
Scott yes!! Me too! (Oakland show). I even flew in from out of town by myself to attend. Zero regret, I couldn’t put it better than filled my soul. I really needed it too. Which makes some of of these comments so misguided... I can’t actually get mad or even seriously annoyed at most of them. Just sort of, OK this isn’t your jam, but that only means it’s different, not that it’s wrong. I learned this as a teenager when I first came to America is an exchange student in high school - “its not wrong just different”. Not such a hard concept, and makes your life a lot more pleasant so a lot of these comments I think, OK, that’s your opinion, wish you were more mature about it well, goodbye... even the hateful ones, can’t touch the feeling. It was one of the best live performances I’ve seen. Awesome. As in awe inspiring. For those who don’t like her new direction, that’s fine - she’s made it clear she was expecting it and that she’s cool with shedding some old weight. Out with the old is good sometimes. I adore the first album and it’s whole mood and everything. But I’m on board with this too. Not going to be everybody’s comfort zone or taste, but that’s fine.
I applaud the audacity, the conviction, the fearlessness, the boundaries being broken. It's all so weird and and at the same time awesome. It's amazing what you guys do. Love it.
Like it or not, it's unique and Karin Dreijer hammers it home that she doesn't have to prove anything to anyone. I like all the people in the comments hating on this because it's the first time they hear music that's not made to be popular but to be artistic expression. You'll come around. Or not. Doesn't matter.
This was the best live show of 2018 easily. I hope Fever Ray releases these live versions/arrangements. I loved all these songs in here but the rest also, also especially Triangle Walks and I'm Not Done were amazing.
FEVER RAY IS AHEAD OF THEIR TIME AND THEY ARE HERE....MUCH LIKE BANKS, FKA TWIGS AND OTHERS THAT COME TO MIND.. THESE WOMEN ARE WRITING LYRICS THAT ARE ASKING YOU TO BE MORE DISCERING AND TO HAVE FREEWILL TO CHOSE AND LEARN TO LOVE YOURSELF. I LOVE IT. LONG LIVE FEVER RAY. SEPT 20 2020
That warbling sound, it's drilling down into my brain, but in a really good way! Love the visuals, synth, vocal work, percussion and really the whole gestalt here, it's gorgeous and very creepy. Absolutely my kind of vibe.
When I listened to the new album for the first time I hated it, thought to myself "I waited 10 years for this?!", but I came to love (parts) of it over time. Karin has always been a bold artist, and so it is likely that not all of her artistic choices will resonate with fans of her older work. Fever Ray's debut album was honestly one of my favourite records of all time - dark, thoughtful, broody. The new album is much more gaudy and violent, but hey, it's Karin - she can do what the hell she wants. If she needs to reclaim some part of herself she thinks she lost, then go for it. That said - seeing them live was an absolute fucking trip, and made me see the new album in a different light. They are fantastic live, but I really do hope that her next album (probably another 10 years from now) is closer to their first album, or, at the very least, goes in a completely different direction to Plunge.
Excelent video electronicbeats (as always). For me Plunge is the sort of album that when you first listen it doesn't seem that great but when you listen again it blows your mind. Of course its not for everybody but if you like the knife and fever ray, you'll def like her new album. I guess this album resembles more to the knife than to fever ray debut, which had more organic sounds.
If you take the time to read interviews and listen to what the artist has to say about their reasons and approach on newer material, you'll have a better understanding. Long time fan of The Knife. Loved that Karin ventured out/went solo with Fever Ray. First album was great! However, if she did another album in that character, it would get tired quick. She intentionally creates these characters; each with their own story perhaps; in a very theatrical and avangard way. They get our attention! I like the space between album releases...makes you wonder what's next. I admire her raw and unfiltered approach with Plunge. It may not be for everyone. I get it. You go girl! Keep reinventing. I'm all ears.
Its very easy for us to judge others. Sitting here behind screens. Let the first one here to have a successful career in music throw the first stone. You go create. Put yourself out there. Lets see how it goes. You need courage to be yourself. She has that. Like it or not. Its a free world thank goodness and shes free to look or feel or make whatever she wants. Maybe shes going for a different look to experiment, to see what society will say. Its interesting reading peoples views. Women do not need to be pretty, or beautiful or attractive to be admired. Its inner beauty that shines through. A kind loving soul. She has that. And her new music kicks ass!
Karin is definitely talented, and she has already clearly demonstrated that with her previous album. The problem is that her new work is barely art, she's not really exploring anything, she's not asking a question, she's making a statement (specially when performing live) about how society should treat and value people, specially women (a message with which I totally agree btw, people should never be unfairly discriminated). I don't mind "ugliness" or weirdness when it comes to art, but Karin is just being ugly and unattractive for the sake of being ugly and unattractive. It's all social commentary now as opposed to the dark and mysterious atmospheres she created in her first album. I'm very happy that artists are free to create whatever they want, but it's just sad when they use that freedom to compromise their own artistic potential.
but is also fine for fans of the debut to not be as enamoured with plunge, just as some fans of plunge may not like the debut album as it may be too Scandinavian and dark. As for this you have to be successful musician to criticise music is just nonsense... That is like saying if you cannot get elected then you shouldn't criticise politicians..
Whoa! Came here with Karin's earlier music in mind, and this is DIFFRUNT!?! Echoes of pre-77 Devo sexploration and angry Sinead O'Connor. The hate in the comments is raw but disappointing. I found this a challenging first listen, stumbling over my preconceptions, but I will listen again. And if I don't dig it, ok, but I won't dump crap on someone else's creation. Power to you Karin!
"a challenging first listen" eh? If you see a beautiful landscape is this a challenging sight? If you smell fresh bread is it difficult to immediately find this pleasant? Well you are probably allergic to gluten, but you see what i'm saying. You are not a bad person if you don't like this Bob. Be true to yourself and your gut feeling. Just because she is spewing ideologic propaganda that is en vogue, doesn't make this good music.
I love this.....It’s so hard now to do something original and a little different..It’s not going to have the same impact as the Pistols in 76 but at least she is without vanity and it is brave...It’s pop dressed up.. Ultimately, it’s just pop music...difficult maybe...but pop.
the sad irony of all these men in the comment section getting offended by karin dreijer's work. the more you are offended the more you prove her point. and the fact that you still like the music, but can't deal with her feminist approach. just sad. the cognitive dissonance is strong
I look at it as no different than a Marilyn Manson or Rammstein show. Both bands used shocking images as well for different reasons. If they are offended at this, I wonder what their reaction would be to seeing/hearing Bück Dich, Ich tu Dir Weh or Pussy
It’s not that I’m offended. It’s sad that artists keep introducing political messages into their art/performances. When I listen to Karin I want to be transported to the mysterious, dark, soothing world that she creates, I don’t want the journey to that world to be anchored and limited by propaganda; regardless of the nature of the propaganda.
