This rendition totally reminds me of an emotionally abused victim trying to convince herself that it's all normal, I love this!! So much deeper than the original
Janey Grace in a lot of ways the last 5 years is a mutually emotionally toxic relationship. They both get caught up in their careers and focus on the relationship mostly when it's gone wrong already and Jamie has given up.
I agree, I always saw this song as Jamie projecting and assuming that the problems in the relationship where due to Cathy's insecurities and a jealousy of his success rather than owning up to how his own flaws and emotional absence might be hurting the relationship. Seeing those assumptions portrayed as a message that has been totally adopted and internalized by Cathy makes it all the more heartbreaking
Very interesting. I actually saw it as a beautiful and hope-inspiring rendition from a kind of Kathy who finally believed Jamie when he tells her that he brlieves in her. Does that make sense? Kind of like a really insecure woman who has to tell herself 'he does believe in you and this means you can really do it'. A healty kind of monologe.
I have always wanted a lesbian last five years with two women (because Jamie and Cathy can both be feminine names) but JRB has said "no way" to that idea. =(
Siri Hammond I get that it would be awesome, but maybe he's said no because 1. Transposing sucks oof and 2. It would paint a lesbian relationship in a bad light, which is kinda not something we need right now. But, as a girl who absolutely loves Jamie's songs, I hope it'll happen eventually
k rather than paint them in a bad light, I think it’d just show a realistic portrayal of a relationship. Sometimes partners fight and sometimes relationships just don’t work out. I think it’d be a cool idea, but I agree it could be taken badly.
@@robylopezvi yeah theres def abuse and bad stuff possible in queer relationships too just like straight ones so i feel like maybe its a silly take to say no to a queer version of the show just bc it would paint them in a bad light. a lot of ppl seem to think wlw relationships r all good and happy and easier than straight ones so honestly i think itd be a good message to show that no, they can be just as messy and just as hard bc at the end of the day its still a relationship and sometimes people just dont work out together.
One of the better versions I saw was by Jonathan Bailey who does this thing where he turns to leave & comes back like, I feel bad but I need to pile it on so you don’t get I’m trying to gaslight you now. I wanna perform this so bad, but have a few beats. Like in the movie where you can see the horror on his face because he said she was a loser who can’t win. & then he’s preparing to gaslight her into going. Sooooo powerful.
I love the emotion and rawness that Laura brings to this rendition. She absolutely nailed this interpretation of Cathy's character. Can we have a Laura and Jeremy reunion for a revival, please?
I was really skeptical going into this, but it turned out to be one of the most tragic and heartbreaking things I've ever seen and I'm just over here silently sobbing.
That was a really unique interpretation of the song- completely changes how the scene is viewed and the feelings the song evokes. It’s hard to pull off a big change like that successfully, however this was been done with a subtle elegance that brings a new beauty to the song. Congrats. That’s what a true musician and performer does. Bravo.
I had a really hard time letting go of my perceptions of Jamie throughout the song, but by the end its almost cathartic as she takes both a generous AND gracious stance in her self-reflection. I wonder if the whole show was role reversed, would it not just be a depiction of an emotionally healthy relationship?
@@StateOfTheInitiative that is a brilliant point. ive often thought how great it would be to see this show done with the roles reversed. i hope someone is brave enough to do it one day. it could be truly groundbreaking.
If it's switched it becomes like that, in the original material she doesn't feel like this but it's really interesting to see what he was kina expecting of her
@@Some_Call_Me_Pietro no, it’s because this is what Cathy’s hearing from Jamie in her POV which makes it much more painful and makes Cathy more insecure than she already is not what she was initially thinking. It’s harder to think of what Cathy’s thinking when Jamie was telling her this, but with this POV i feel like we can see how it sort of turned out like gaslighting
While Laura has sung it really beautifully and added a new sense to this already beautiful song, it wouldn't work in the show. Cathy was stuck in her head and all. BUT that's the point of cabaret singers! And i'm really happy to get this version it really gets a whole new meaning
I am so used to her being the perfect princess in these but damn when she wants to sing something else it's amazing to watch just her presence is so captivating and she sings with such conviction
This is such a beautiful recreation of what is in my opinion the most important song in The Last 5 Years. Gives such a new perspective and if it had been this way in the show, they would've probably stayed together. Laura did an EXCELLENT job. Just....chills. Like I'm actually sobbing
Wow. No words, just tears in my eyes. It hits different when these words actually come from Cathy herself, rather than hearing them from Jamie. It hurts so much more.
I didn't think this song could be any more sad, but here we are. Also, if she had this perspective in the show they probably would have ended up staying together.
ikr? that's why this is one of the more powerful lyric changes. i feel like they would have a better chance of staying together if cathy learned this about herself. of course jamie had faults that he didn't learn either in the og text, but maybe if jamie sung "see i'm smiling" they would've both stayed together. in the real show neither of them really change their ways, which is heartbreaking.
Wow. What a striking rendition of this song. The change in perspective that brings empowerment rather than condemnation. Crazy. Laura also sings this with emotion and conviction.
Especially combined with his next song. She was clearly just someone who worshiped him enough & wasn’t a Jewish girl. I don’t think he ever truly loved her like she loved him. She loved him because he dazzled her & was exciting & fascinating & gave her everything she wanted & she loved HIM for it. She was just the exciting non Jewish girl & it could have been anyone. I love this comment so much and seeing people come out of the woodwork who actually like Jamie on some level is so refreshing! ( I was going to say understand but that felt cruel) It's such a different emotional journey this way. I feel like originally (well in the film where you actually see her journey) Cathy goes numb and closes off at the end where as here she's weirdly peaceful. At least from my point of view. Other people think the relationship is extremely unhealthy so to each their own.
Multiple forks and knives. It’s horrible. I would never do this. Giving people chinaware and forks & shit to eat during dinner theater shouldn’t be a thing. Give them sandwiches.

Woah this is such an interesting interpretation of this song! Really cool!
But why, Laura, why? Im cryiiing
Legend has it that the man with the fork and plate was assassinated as he stepped out of the room at the end of the show.
Pretty sure there are multiple son of a bitches with plates & knives & forks & all of them should be kneecapped with forks.
BEAUTIFUL MARVELOUS SPLENDID GORGEOUS QUEEN💚💙💜
I always thought this song was such an example of rapacious conditional semi-abusive love. Switching the perspective really makes that apparent.

Is this anyone elses first time seeing her with her hair down and long? I love her look in this.
Okay but had they kept the pronouns the same this would've been gay AF and I would be living
Hayley Shields I think the theme of the concert thing was singing songs from different characters perspectives
Laila G good to know, thank you!
Laila G Mm, I dig that. Can't help feeling a little disappointed though, but at least we got Caissie Levy, right?
AlwaysGonnaSing ofc, what a blessing
The whole point was to change the pronouns, thus 'pronoun showdown'.
now we just need jeremy to sing a pronoun change of see i’m smiling !
YES YES YES

If he didn’t believe in me
We wouldn’t be having this fight
If he didn’t believe in me
He’d walk out the door and say Cathy you’re right
But he never could let that go
Knowing the things about me he knows
Things when he met me four years ago, he knew
It never took much convincing to make him believe in you.
Don’t you get to be happy Cathy
At some point down the line
Don't you get to relax
Without some new turis to push him yet further from you.
If he’s cheering on your side Cathy
Why can’t you support his,
Why do you have to feel he’s committed some felony
Doing what he always swore he would do?
He doesn’t want me to hurt,
Doesn't want me to sink,
But I know what he thinks.
He thinks I’ll be fine.
Just hang on and I’ll see.
You can’t make him wait til you do to be happy with you.
Would you listen to me?
No one can give me courage.
No one can thicken my skin.
He will not fail so you can be comfortable Cathy,
He will not lose because you can’t win.
If he didn’t believe in you
Then here’s where the travelogue ends.
If he didn’t believe in me
He couldn’t have stood before all of our friends
And said this is the life I choose,
This is the thing I can’t bear to lose.
Trip us or trap us but we refuse to fall.
That’s what I thought we agreed on, Jamie.
If he hadn’t believed in me,
He wouldn’t have loved me at all.
I was so confused for a bit but i eventually got it 😂
someone please tell me what key this is in 😩
in case anyone wants to know it’s in C
Thank you!!!
If he did believe in you, Cathy, he wouldn’t have cheated.

What key is this in??
Emily Ruli C!
What key is this rendition in?
C
Does anyone have the sheet music?
Does anyone know what key she does this in?
Laura you had no right
Apparently they gave a pig a fork and knife and sat them by the camera.
Multiple forks and knives. It’s horrible. I would never do this. Giving people chinaware and forks & shit to eat during dinner theater shouldn’t be a thing. Give them sandwiches.
The plates and flatware noise - oy. Put your shit down and listen.
My misophonia has never been so triggered. My G-d. Why don’t they just smash plates?
Incredible talent - too far from New York
Amazing. Also this version makes me dislike the Jamie character even more.
Auch.
I hate this so much. It makes it so clear how manipulative and gaslighty this song is. I love it, but my God I’m annoyed lmao.
Why do they have to change the pronouns? Can't a girl sing a song about another girl? I really don't like when people do that.
I think that's the purpose of pronoun showdown.
In this context, it's for the sake of a different interpretation. Pronoun showdowns are, in general, taking love songs and shifting the perspective
There are people

And all of the ten thousand women you are
If I didn't think you could do
Anything you ever wanted to
If I wasn't certain that you'd come through somehow
The fact of the matter is, Cathy
I wouldn't be standing here now
If I didn't believe in you
We wouldn't be having this fight
If I didn't believe in you
I'd walk out the door and say, "Cathy, you're right."
But I never could let that go
Knowing the things about you I know -
Things, when I met you four years ago, I knew
It never took much convincing
To make me believe in you
Don't we get to be happy, Cathy?
At some point down the line
Don't we get to relax
Without some new tsuris
To push me yet further from you?
If I'm cheering on your side, Cathy
Why can't you support mine?
Why do I have to feel
I committed some felony
Doing what I always swore I would do?
I don't want you to hurt
I don't want you to sink
But you know what I think?
I think you'll be fine!
Just hang on and you'll see -
But don't make me wait 'til you do
To be happy with you -
Will you listen to me?
No one can give you courage
No one can thicken your skin
I will not fail so you can be comfortable, Cathy
I will not lose because you can't win
If I didn't believe in you
Then here's where the travelogue ends
If I didn't believe in you
I couldn't have stood before all of our friends
And said, "This is the life I choose -
This is the thing I can't bear to lose
Trip us or trap us, but we refuse to fall."
That's what I thought we agreed on, Cathy
If I hadn't believed in you
I wouldn't have loved you at all
Now why don't you put on your dress and we'll go, okay? Cathy? Can we do that, please? Please?

I love her but the pronouns. Maybe I'm just used to listening to the original 100 times a day.
I really don’t like this. Her singing is great though.
I wish she hadn’t flipped the pronouns and had just sung it straight as a woman to another woman 🤷♀️
love her but her anti covid vax got her cancelled
There are people
And they are publishing my book
And there's a party that they're throwing
And while you've made it very clear that you're not going
I will be going
And that's done
But what's it really about?
Is it really about a party, Cathy?
Can we please for a minute stop blaming
And say what you feel?
Is it just that you're disappointed
To be touring again for the summer?
Did you think this would all be much easier
Then it's turned out to be?
Well, then talk to me, Cathy
Talk to me
If I didn't believe in you
We'd never have gotten this far
If I didn't believe in you
And all of the ten thousand women you are
If I didn't think you could do
Anything you ever wanted to
If I wasn't certain that you'd come through somehow
