I've loved it from her perspective and KRC absolutely blows it out of the water with every performance. She's pure and simply a queen

Honestly. From this perspective, it feels like unwarranted guilt placed on her by Jamie’s gaslighting. Of course she has her insecurity that she needs to workout, but internalizing these particular messages that was originally from Jamie’s perspective is just a internalized abuse.
If she has to engage in this self-reflection, he damn better be too because the burden of guilt should not just be on her. Jamie could have been more present, he could have included her more on his journey to success instead of centering himself in everything he does, and, let’s be real, he didn’t have to freaking cheat on her.
I started listening to the Last 5 Years when I was 16. Now that I’m 34, I understand this song to reflect Jamie’s douchbaggery because he fails to own up to his flaws and poor actions while gaslighting Kathy and making her feel even worse about her insecurities instead of supporting her and helping her through it. Even the line “just hang on and you’ll see” is so goddamn patronizing. Instead of telling her to hang on, the supportive thing to do would have been to ask what it is that she needs and how he can better support her while also be able to pursue his dreams.

Yes, thank you, because this song is always seen as the song that proves Jaime is “good” and honestly I hate this song because of that. Jaime is literally awful the whole way through.
Even the Schmuel Somg when he is trying to “cheer her up” just proves that he doesn’t care what is bothering her at all. He just comes up with his own narrative for what he thinks is wrong, does something flashy, makes it all about him with his elaborate storytelling and dramatics, and then tells her she will be okay.
Jaime’s progression goes like this: interested in her because she is different, thinks the relationship is going too fast but just complains to himself instead of expressing anything to Kathy, excitement about his own success and telling Kathy she’ll be successful too and that’s why he likes her, getting married, immediately implying that he got with Kathy because the “better options” weren’t available and regretting that he can’t act on that, belittling her and calling her unsupportive, cheating on her, leaving her.
      Like, what a dick.

There was more emotion in this one song than there was throughout that entire movie
