As much as I love this movie, it's hilariously inaccurate The rebel forces had modern weapons as well, including mortars and guns It also paints the rebels as patriotic heroes fighting for their way of traditional life, which appeals to a lot of westerners The reality being a LOT of samurai modernized and joined the Imperial army, and the rebels were mostly landlords who wanted to maintain power over their class privileges and indentured peasants.
thing is saigo army have modern equipment like imperial had. but his army were outgun and outmatch.. and in the end they katana charge the imperial because they out of ammo.
