I don't think I will ever find a video as good as this one. This is absolutely fantastic. Makes me want to completely trash my 240's tires all over the track. But then again its a stock car with rust everywhere :(

Drift isn't far from grip you still need to have grip on a drift car or wont do any smoke at all and most likely you will spin out every time. Of course that a spoiler works better going forward but instead of arguing with airplane examples a will give you as an example WRC cars or even Sprint Cars, spoilers are made to create downforce wile going forward and sideways! Of course that 70% of the time is just for show, but the true is it helps to stabilise the back(if you have power to justify it)
go to a tire repairer, they have to pay for junk old or used tries, so you can get them for free. I have 3 different tire reapirer shops who give me tons of used tries lol

i give up. as someone who drifts, loves cars, been there and done that i thought i would give you correct information but you dont like to be proven wrong. i could give you more links from the people who actually build drift cars rather than random people talking about them on a forum but i think it would be a wasted effort at this point.as a final experiment, make a paper airplane with flaps. then move it diagonally through the air. observe what happens.

Downforce is a downwards thrust created by the aerodynamic characteristics of a car. The purpose of downforce is to allow a car to travel faster through a corner by increasing the vertical force on the tires, thus creating more grip.
Polar opposites.
No shit they aren't completely sideways. Any amount of sideways movement be it small is enough difference to make it lose it's point. Besides that the back tires are spinning faster then the car is moving, there is no downforce needed in that. I've driven a Shelby GT500, I've been riding bikes all my life I know enough about speed and downforce. And when you're drifting you don't need it. What the hell are you gripping when you're not even using the tires for grip.
show is a big part of it but function is also at the pro level. like i said, theyre not completely sideways. the car is still moving and facing forward at an angle. and do you really think drift cars dont need downforce? grip and stability are HUGE factors when building a drift car or any car for that matter. and what does launching off a line have to do with anything? have you ever been drifting or even driven a high horsepower car?
i think you'd be surprised by how low the speed is where a wing(depending on how its positioned) actually generates a noticeable amount of downforce. and even at an angle, a wing can create downforce since theyre not actually going completely sideways. in a sport where cars are light and have 500+ horsepower spinning the rear wheels, they can use as much stability and bite as they can get.

invest in a tire changing machine for yourself, maybe second hand.
and then go ask tyre stores and garages if you can have some of their old tires they would throw away because they are no longer road legal.

What pushes them forward in terms of the track is their entrance speed what pushes them forward in relation to the car actually going forward is just because the car's tires are slipping there is still just a little bit of friction there to propell them forward but not by much at all.
Besides that in those turns they are going in at speeds about 80-100 and exiting maybe 40-60. At those speeds there isn't enough downforce being generated to need them still. High horsepower has nothing to do with downforce. The faster you're going does. And the highest these see is 120 on a straight.
No.. There is no downforce generated going sideways. F1 cars can attest to that. Nor do they need downforce when they are drifting. And they don't launch off the line.
I'll take all the other answers over yours. Its more for show then function.
I still don't understand the giants spoilers on cars that are meant to drive sideways, those cars don't put out ungodly amounts of power nor do they reach speeds on the streets to need them z.z and they don't function going sideways
Dont spend alot of money on brand new tires if your just getting into it. Buy some used ones that still have good tread on them and go from there. Can get good used ones for cheap from alot of tire places.
Again. Maybe more in weight then anything and perhaps the canards in the front yes for FRONT tire traction. But still pointless in the back. Notice half of those cars in this video. No rear spoiler.
Im a Honda guy, and ive got equally as much respect for drift as i do track, touge, or time attack stuff. Cars are cars, and damn they are amazing. Just each one has a specific function.

I think the Skyline's 4wd system must be tweaked. It's able to go RWD when it's going in a straight line, then shift some of the power to the front wheels as well when going round turns. The person who modified that car must have modified it so that it doesn't put any power into the front wheels. But that does depend on the model, so I could be completely wrong here.
