Was up there last week, Blue Mountains Council is in the process of doing and environmental clean up as the mushroom compost is a serious health hazard. Spoke for half an hour with one of the team of experts performing the work, the plan is to eventually open the tunnel for public use .

The Eastern portal is in a gully on an off-road trail. It is a bit difficult to access and I wouldn't go there right after a storm either.
Follow Hillside Cres until the house on the GWH side disappear and a trail should appear. Follow it to the right and you come to a fork. Go left and follow it. It becomes difficult here as it is a dirt track with leg high grass and spiders everywhere. After a while, you'll go into gully. Keep going and you'll notice a swamp like thing infront of you. You're standing on top of the portal. If you go right, you can get down if you're really determined. I went left but be careful because the path gets narrow and you're stuffed if you fall off either side. And make sure you have your phone with you. There is still decent reception if something goes wrong.

Or you can just access it from the end of Lucasville road. More straight forward of a walk in the bush, and a bit safer in summer as it's a wider path. You get A LOT of red bellies, eastern browns, and tiger snakes on that side due to the water/food sources for them there.

Used to play in there as a kid. We used the other entrance in the gully. Was used as a mushroom tunnel then. Got chased out quite a number of times too. Haha.

In the UK this would be opened to the public and made into a tourist attraction

Seems a great tunnel going to waste that could be used for light rail or bicycles riders as another form of transport

I went here a few years ago with my friends... certainly has changed a lot! The place was full of demountables, one was an office, that still had food in the fridge, office equiptment like working computers, printers etc. and then the others were filled with soiled mattresses, where all the illegals were living. Strange thing was, it still had electricity/water hooked up to it all, although there were no cameras/security at that time.
Place looked/smelt worse than a brothel in a 3rd world country. Got into the tunnel (Which was FULL of mushrooms!) and walked as far to the end as we could with torches, however the end is pretty flooded so no way to get out the other end - however the end is accessible via a bush walking track on the other side of the great western highway.
Was so annoyed though, once we walked all the way back to the opening, my mate was playing with the power board at the entrance which controls the exhaust fan at the top of the tunnel entrance - turns out there was a switch to turn on all the lights and light up the WHOLE tunnel! Absolutely beautiful to see, however it certainly would have been more convenient if we knew that at the start...
A few weeks later was when they put the huge metal gate at the roads entrance in.

How did you get past the locked gate? Is there a way to get to the portal at the other end?

The gate had a gap in it

It's the other end thats a mushroom farm, that end was a WW2 (I think) era stage facility for 'tear gas' & other noxious substances the War Department thought they needed....
I grew up in the area & used to spend a LOT of time exploring places like that from Richmond/Windsor in the north through to Warragamba in the south & all across the mountains before I eventually moved away west of Lithgow....
Could probably still lead you to a few interesting location, if only I had transport these days!

How long is this tunnel and does it curve or is it straight.
Seems a waste of a valuable superstructure.

Be careful poking around in that area, RAAF Glenbrook might not like it very much.
