      Notice how Applebaum always "grabs the mic" so her narrative dominates, and runs down the interview clock, on topics which could counter her arguments.
      For example: On Russia's transition from Soviet Union, and Israel's genocide in Gaza.

    So much projection here. Much of what she says applies equally to the US and the West. Politicians in the US are mostly focused on their own money and power. See the effect of the war criminal Bibi Netanyahu on congress with the standing ovations. The fact that autocrats turn up their noses at Western values is because we don't respect our own. The rule of law is not respected in the US and the lack of respect for Palestinian lives by the US is horrendous. The US has invaded multiple countries and has interfered with lots of elections around the world. The autocrats see how little we abide by our own values and don't think they need to abide by them either. Aaron, you needed to push back a lot more on her views.

    • @KapnScumdreg
      @KapnScumdreg Месяц назад +1

      Absolutely. As soon as she started talking about states that 1. Invade and occupy other populations 2. Think they can act with impunity 3. Have contempt for international conventions, organisations and human rights, I kept thinking 'when is Aaron going to mention Israel?'.
      Equally plenty of other western backed states (e.g. Saudi Arabia and it's war in Yemen) also fit this description, yet don't make it onto her list, clearly because she splits states into Western allies (good) and western opponents (bad).

She took platform to reiterate official policy and narrative, and if she sways one person in this kind of hostile territory, good. People that are on her side probably track all these engagements, collect comments, even work for these companies like yt. In one place she said that Putin doesn't respect international law then in another that UN charters are idealized (we shouldn't take them too seriously)..In one instance she blames her Dictator Inc autocrats for invading smaller countries and then when confronted (very weakly) with US invasions or US ally aggressions she says "can't the world be a little bit more nuanced than that?", blaming the analogy..

      The thing is she very probably believes it. Like Christian fundamentalists and white supremacists, neocons don't get to be neocons by adhering to a point of view that actually necessarily reflects reality.

    If democracy everywhere is the goal then our governments have to ditch being hypocrites. I believe capitalism and democracy are ultimately incompatible. Accommodations are, at times of social unrest, made and we get health care, education, pensions etc. But it doesn't last. Just long enough to pacify an unsettled majority then it winds back. If Democracy is the aim then restructuring our economies is a must.

    The media taught me to distrust the media. Modern communication allowed me to pick up the phone in the 1970s and call my relatives on the other side of the world, ask them if what I heard on 'the news' was accurate and hear a vastly different account of what transpired on their street. The media is not a disinterested player. It has political and economic agendas, can be bought and sold by wealthy individuals and advance their interests. I learned to cast a wide net when it comes to 'the news.'

    Aaron didn't even challenge Applebaum's sanctimonious appeal to condemnation of Russia's invading the sovereignty of Ukraine with the illegal and immoral US invasion of Iraq went years earlier. Putin could rightly say that the invasion of Ukraine was an imitation of the US invasion of Iraq, and that you simply cannot play this game amongst nuclear armed powers without things going very awry eventually..
