I'm pretty confused about why this interview is on Novara - I hope it's a one-off and not a sign of things to come.
She's either convinced that what she says is accurate, or she knows full well what she's doing, and she's not a very nice person. The US failed to asset strip Russia, and Putin has restored national pride. What the FBI and CIA do has more effect on more lives than what the KGB or SVR do. How Putin got rich isn't anything more than a cute distraction, like MTV's this my crib. Straight afterwards, NM should have invited reactions from Matt Kennard and John Mearsheimer. Her point of view is bad faith, rather than informative.
The U.S. did do a reasonable of asset stripping Russia which Putin put an end to. Which is why the U.S. wants regime change. What a lot of people don’t realise is that the U.S. and other Western interests are currently asset stripping Ukraine, with Zelensky’s complicity.
Mearsheimer never cared for Eastern Europeans and their agenda in all of this. He is an old man stucked in Cold War Era. Eastern Europe moved on and left Russia behind long time ago.
“Putin has restored national pride” by invading neighboring countries (notice the plural) and eliminating civil rights for LGBT folks. The world would have been a better place if he didn’t…
How Putin got rich and how corrupt that whole clique is actually gives important information about how that regime functions. No it is not unimportant.
At 26 mins, "Putin took that concept of sovereignty bla bla and he can invade anyone he wants" I had to check the speaker's nationality because an American with a gram of dignity would said that. Silly of me.

Particularly adroit the way she portrays any criticism of the West's catastrophic role in the Russian transition, or acknowledgment of the massive missed opportunities there, as actually a West-centric view. "I, the non-chauvinist neutral party, can explain how it's actually all the Russians' fault, all of it!" lmao how enlightened! 😂
The thing is she very probably believes it. Like Christian fundamentalists and white supremacists, neocons don't get to be neocons by adhering to a point of view that actually necessarily reflects reality.

I forced myself to listen to this rubbish till the end but the ideological delusion sprouted in this interview was breathtaking done without any pushback to correct the lies and misinformation. Novara Media has sunk to a low I could never have imagined.
Aaron didn't do a good job here. Huge fan but he let her talk about how Russia and China defy international law, but yet didn't press her on Western Illegal Invasions and Israel's genocide.
How casually and superficially she drop a line on the Chinese undermining the UN, or about the genocidal intention of Putin in Ukraine -" genocide is today an abused world" -that means there is no genocide in Gaza.... Please, prof Mairsheimer, come to the rescue!
If democracy everywhere is the goal then our governments have to ditch being hypocrites. I believe capitalism and democracy are ultimately incompatible. Accommodations are, at times of social unrest, made and we get health care, education, pensions etc. But it doesn't last. Just long enough to pacify an unsettled majority then it winds back. If Democracy is the aim then restructuring our economies is a must.
The media taught me to distrust the media. Modern communication allowed me to pick up the phone in the 1970s and call my relatives on the other side of the world, ask them if what I heard on 'the news' was accurate and hear a vastly different account of what transpired on their street. The media is not a disinterested player. It has political and economic agendas, can be bought and sold by wealthy individuals and advance their interests. I learned to cast a wide net when it comes to 'the news.'
Aaron didn't even challenge Applebaum's sanctimonious appeal to condemnation of Russia's invading the sovereignty of Ukraine with the illegal and immoral US invasion of Iraq went years earlier. Putin could rightly say that the invasion of Ukraine was an imitation of the US invasion of Iraq, and that you simply cannot play this game amongst nuclear armed powers without things going very awry eventually..
My gag reflex is getting a lot of exercise watching this. Zero calling her out on the double standards: US is allowed to invade smaller countries, but Russia is not. Cool.
The spread of Islam is not acceptable, but the Western export of liberalism and the ideology of human rights through military interventions and economic extortion is OK? :D Was Churchill, whose policies are blamed for the 1943 famine in India, in which 3 million people died, an autocrat? Is British imperialism and tens of millions of forcibly subjugated, enslaved and murdered colonial inhabitants a reflection of a democratic or autocratic culture?
That was old style colonialism. You will find it difficult to find people in the UK agreeing with that now. Actually old style colonialism was beaten out of most European countries after the war. Except for Russia of course.
One thing is always glaringly clear, when you listen to Scott Ritter, Max Blumenthal, Matt Kennard vs when you listen to the guest on this show. The former speak in details and concrete arguments whilst the neocons speak in generalities and vibes.

I'm big enough to sort the wheat from the chaff, but thanks for the concern 😂
No
It IS necessary & democratic to expose her, presumably heartfelt, opinions. But, beyond the softball challenges included in the interview, it is necessary to itemize the glaring hypocrisy of her misplaced self-confidence with an articulate rebuttal. Progressive people need to understand & find ways to combat the arrogant neoliberalist enemy, for which she is an elitist poster-girl.

Wasn't it just a week or two ago where NM were criticising Venezuela on their weekday evening programme? And now this. F*ck me, this is bad
This is surely an aberration and I've no idea why it happened, but it's definitely given me pause re Novara. Let's see what they continue to say going forward.

painful unfunny joke with her power and influence
Do you think Americans read? They are watching Fox news and listening to Joe Rohan and Marjorie Traitor Greene
At least the comment box reassured me.
That’s the only ray of light in this horror!
This is not want we want from independent media. We need critical informed voices not establishment journalists spouting drivel. We get this on the BBC ,major newspapers etc. Bastani is always Navara's weakest voice but he plums new depths in this interview

This is the most hilarious interview ever on Novara Media. She is sitting there sounding intelligent and knowledgable, spouting nonsense US propaganda that you might expect to read unquestioned at The Telegraph! I suspect that she may not have realised that Novara’s audience is probably better informed about the world than she is if this is what she believes!
One thing you got wrong there. She's way better informed about the world and especially about what's going on behind the closed doors than we are. She knows exactly what she's saying. Probably not aware to what kind of audience, but there's not much to lose, especially as it's a softball interview. She took platform to reiterate official policy and narrative, and if she sways one person in this kind of hostile territory, good. People that are on her side probably track all these engagements, collect comments, even work for these companies like yt. They estimate if there's potential for any kind of true resistance and if there is just manufacture new distraction culture war type of thing. Oh, Peterson vs Zizek 2 is coming up or Tommy Robinson or whatever.
@@moneypennysloverboy yes, cant disagree with you there. She goes around the world doing propaganda for the US and knows what she’s at for sure. It must take a special kind of chutzpah to sit there spouting total bullshit with a straight face.
Have to also add, that her Nobel Prize confirms something I figured out some decades ago. The entire infrastructure of our supposed ‘liberal’ democratic organisations that purport to defend freedom and democracy has been hijacked and co-opted and corrupted by neoliberalism. NGO’s funded by the State Department, Amnesty international, the Nobel Cttee, nuclear watchdogs, the international courts and judiciary, UN organisations and even our own UK political parties have all been corrupted by US and international money…
So, Aaron, i guess your conclusion is that The USA has been very good for the world as a whole.
I dont mind Novara interviewing people like AA , but the questioning of her perspective was virtually nil...that equates to just giving her a platform.

Every time she describes Putin etc, I assume she is describing the Clinton, Bushes, Obamas and all the rest of them.
🎯
That’s exactly what it sounds like. Every time she describes Russia, China or Iran etc I thought she was describing the US, Israel and it’s allies.
One hundred percent.
You're comparing Obama to Putin????
To sum up - Applebaum basically said in the interview: "When we invade others or shred international law to bits it's no justification for others to do the same". Aaron didn't challenge the guest meaningfully on any point and also sounded very unconfident in many places where he did actually have a very good opportunity to expose Applebaum's arguments, facts, and analogies.
In one place she said that Putin doesn't respect international law then in another that UN charters are idealized (we shouldn't take them too seriously)..In one instance she blames her Dictator Inc autocrats for invading smaller countries and then when confronted (very weakly) with US invasions or US ally aggressions she says "can't the world be a little bit more nuanced than that?", blaming the analogy..
Aaron lost all too many opportunities to make the interview meaningful..This way it didn't seem to
Brilliant comment ❤
No one should ever take Novara media seriously after this.
thats a little harsh. i think the weekday reporting and the sunday interviews are two different things

Anne says that the word 'genocide' is overused today (and we all know what she's hinting at by saying as much) and Aaron lets it go without any pushback at all - and as many other comments have noted there are plenty of other moments in this interview where Anne gets away with spewing pro-American imperialist talking points without a word of opposition. I'm pretty confused about why this interview is on Novara - I hope it's a one-off and not a sign of things to come.
Yea i caught that one too and she even wormed the statement in there, between sentences.. ugh we all know whats up. Disgusting human being
And then Novara totally blow it by indulging this neocon fantasist.
Novara shouldn't be giving these war criminals any air time.
they should but the should also push back on what they say
The US may have failed to asset strip Russia, but Putin and his cronies sure didn't!
At 26 mins, "Putin took that concept of sovereignty bla bla and he can invade anyone he wants"
I had to check the speaker's nationality because an American with a gram of dignity would said that. Silly of me.
The blatant hypocrisy of the American government and its allies position regarding Ukraine vs Palestine never ceases to amaze me. It’s so in your face. They just don’t care.
Yeah, don't dare call Putin for what he does because someone else is also bad. Idiotic thinking.
"Rule of Law" ... except for the U.S., right?
Yep. The UN can’t do a thing thanks to the US. The Hague can’t properly prosecute war criminals. It’s all useless thanks to the US more than anyone.
Lumping Venezeula in with Iran and Russia was the first red flag for me.
well, I won't be buying that book in a hurry! what a load of claptrap. "They don't like us" ? How about your foreign policy is designed to exclude alienate and eliminate competition.
Exactly. Saying ‘us’ as well as if our governments’ actions actually represent the people. ‘They’re definitely don’t like her, and it’s definitely not because she ‘supports human rights’.
For heavens sake, why is it people like Anne Applebaum are quick to denounce Russian aggression but choose to ignore Israeli state crimes. Why didn't Mr.Bastani question this?
Should we not denounce Russia for their war crimes? Whataboutism isn't an argument, but a logical fallacy.
It's the infamous "hypocrisy" that defines the Achilles heel of the US.
The neo-GLIBeral arguement goes something like this : “You didn’t do exactly what we wanted ? You’re a rogue/oligarch/criminal/terrorist etc etc”
The worst part about that is so many people still buy it.

It isn’t actually. Ask Russians. Andreij Soldatov, Masha Gessen, Memorial, Pravda News etc.
The thing is she very probably believes it. Like Christian fundamentalists and white supremacists, neocons don't get to be neocons by adhering to a point of view that actually necessarily reflects reality.
So this is how it sounds when everything is viewed from the old regime change thinking in 2024. I hate it but it's important knowledge.

I've never heard such rubbish. It seems to me that Bastani is pretty biased as well. No substance to this conversation, in my opinion.

Aaron didn't even challenge Applebaum's sanctimonious appeal to condemnation of Russia's invading the sovereignty of Ukraine with the illegal and immoral US invasion of Iraq went years earlier.
