My skate team was invited to a skating tournament by our friends the Knight Riders. What made the tournament unusual was that the music was strictly Rap!!! We got to the tournament and entered to compete. We then just hung out together and watched the other contestants and it was fun watching them compete. Later a list of songs was given to us to do our skate routine too. We saw this song and had no PROBLEM!!! choosing this song!!! We were the last to compete. one of the other teams did a premiere routine and led the competition. The Grand Prize was $20,000.00 cash, Custom Rink Jackets, New Skate Equipment, and a Beautiful Trophy!!! The team that was leading was taunting us and trying to make us quit so they would win!! The Captain of the Knight Riders Said To Me " Time to show these people who we ARE"!!! Then the Knight Riders took to the skate floor and this song started. Little did we know people started Cheering then the Captain of the Knight Riders said " Please welcome our teammates the SUPERBIRDS"!!!! My team and I started Flipping and flying all over the rink then I SCREAMED " CANNON"!!! then I launched my girls high in the AIR!!!! Then my girlfriend Danielle SCREAMED "TOMCAT"!!!! then I fired my girls over the top of the Knight Riders!!! My Girls then danced with the Knight Riders. Everyone was CHEERING us on and REALLY getting into this song. When we got done we won the tournament HANDS DOWN!!! NO CONTEST!!! We won the tournament for two reasons, One, The Routine we used, and Two, this song!! the Owner and the DJ said " This song Is how RAP got Started!!! These Teams Are Definitely OLD SCHOOL!!! The Owner asked us to come back and do a Pro-Skating Show For them!!!!
1:17 there was a poster in the bathroom of a house I rented on vacation that was just these lyrics then I found this song randomly while looking through old school hip hop
Who ever put this together was a genius! I have a whole book to say about this! I will be back tomorrow at work to finish my thoughts! I Love it! thanks to the producer! :) love it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Very intelligent baseline. I also like that "one two three" that coincides with the bass line. Very nice to hear again. :-) #### in Dutch: #### De basmelodie is zeer interessant. Ook dat stukje met "one two three" dat precies samenvalt met de basmelodie is cool. Erg leuk om opnieuw te horen.
Indeed, you are correct & I ran put of space. Blowfly indeed came out with his first version of "Rapp Dirty" in 1965. And we can also acknowledge Wanda Robinson, whom rapped over the music of Black Ivory on Today Records at the beginning of the 1970s. And as you said, we can go back to the 20s & to be technical, way back to the griots long before then.
rapture WAS the first rap video to air on Mtv, but not the first rap song ever. Probably, Blondie was aired first due to A bit of that "Shading" that used to happen so much! Thankfully, We're in the process of making an advance, Cause A good dancing groove Is an "Equal opportunity" for everyone to get A move on!
True true true!!! BLONDIE WAS THE 1st to have a actual rap song ( but rap was not really known in the time she had the hit rapture out ( bad timing for her) but she has the fame for being the 1st to have a rap hit on the top list !
That wasn't no rap she couldn't sing... I couldn't really get into Blondie that much...just kidding. That wasn't RAP WAS A MOVEMENT ABOUT THE BLACK STRUGGLE. THE FIRST TIME I EVER HEARD RAPP I WAS WALKING DOWN 125th STREET IN HARLEM ACROSS THE STREET FROM HARLEM STATE OFFICE BUILDING EARLY 80's MY BROTHER HAD A HUGH BEATBOX ON HIS SHOULDERS WITH THIS MUSIC COMING OUT OF IT WITH THIS VOICE WITH ATTITUDE YO I'M NOT GONNA LIE IT SCARED ME TO DEATH BECAUSE THE MUSIC WAS POWERFUL AND I HAD NO IDEAL WHAT THE HECK WAS HAPPENING.. SO THAT WAS A HISTORIC TIME FOR ME. SO UNLESS DEBBIE HARRY WAS PIST ABOUT LIFE OR SOMETHING AND WAS VOICING HER ANGER SHE WASNT RAPPING YO! CATCH MY DRIFT LOL....
yeah, except they weren't rapping about bitches and ho's and violence and drugs, tough guy thugs and attitude, killin, money, gangsta -- It was a little bit different back in the early 80's. This was just a story before the stories got all nasty and violent. Yes, I expect retaliation for saying so too. Think Fat Boys, Kurtis Blow, the real "old school" stuff...
With all due respect, where did you get this information from? To be exact, the first "Rap" song as we know it was actually "King Tim III" by The Fatback Band Featuring King Tim Washington & it came out shortly before "Rapper's Delight" near the end of Summer 1979. Rapture was released the 2nd week of Jan. 1981. Remember that she mentioned Fab Five Freddy & Flash. Just for your edification: check rateyourmusic & look up chapter 1_ hip hop rap singles of 1979 the beginning for starters.
And by the way, no matter what anyone may try to tell you, Millie Jackson WAS & will ALWAYS be considered the "First Woman Of Rap", though rapping over music & not necessarily rhyming. People like Pigmeat Markham, Andre Williams (see "Cadillac Jack"), The Last Poets, Gil Scott-Heron & even Joe Tex will ALWAYS be acknowledged as being part of the roots of Rap. How does Debbie Harry get this exalted position? However, I will acknowledge & give her props for helping expose Rap to the mainstream.
the first rap song was by Blondie aka Debby harry the song was called rapture and was released months before this they were touring with months before they recorded it. so Blondie technically speaking she is the mother of rap as she was recognized by the music industry as the first rapper although she only used once in one song
John Galmann Not really weird - they ripped off the bass line. Earliest pressings did not credit Nile Rodgers of Chic but after a lawsuit he was credited on the label as well. It's a pretty well known trivia fact.
HATE TO BREAK THE NEWS BUT DEBBY HARRY CAME OUT IN 79 WITH RAPTURE WAY BE FOR SUGAR HILL GANG BUT RAPTURE DIDNT HIT THE TOP SPOT FOR THAT SONG TILL 1981 AND GUESS WHAT SHE WAS THE FIRST WHITE RAPPER IF U WANNA GET REAL FACTS LOL A BOUT WHO CAME OUT FIRST LOL
My dad can still remember most of this song and he hasn't heard it in years.
this song is a cornerstone of hiphop.
R.I.P. Big Bank Hank, Thanks for this devastating masterpeice.

Nothing like a vinyl record sound!
Finally, a pure recording straight from vinyl! Thanks for doing this! All the other Long Versions on RUclips have that metallic digital sound to 'em.
Who else here after randomly remembering this song

#1 joint of all time even if they never gave Grandmaster Caz proper respect

yeah, except they weren't rapping about bitches and ho's and violence and drugs, tough guy thugs and attitude, killin, money, gangsta -- It was a little bit different back in the early 80's. debbie harry was hanging around with these an fab 5 freddy and malcolm maclaren and thats where she got the sound from !!
😢
Gouwe ouwe
Why is everyone debating whether this was the first rap song? This is HIP HOP not rap. And yes, it was the first.
"Rapping is the art. Hip Hop is the culture." This is Rap.

the bass riff is excactly the same as chic - good times......
and they were realesed the same year. I find this super weird
