Yes, you did say the name of the river correctly, as to why Calais is pronounced the way it is, I don't know, but I don't think it was named after Calais, France. My grandmother retired from Ganongs Chocolate. It's the only factory where Ganongs Chocolates are made. The Chocolate Museum was the original factory where Ganongs was started by the Ganong family! Their Mansion house was located back further on Water street around where you turned to to the river!
My brother said that they usually cross the border to Calais for shopping...all the things they usually need are cheaper on the US side. 08:03 - On the left, the very last house before the railcross lives a very gentle elderly couple...every time my wife and i passed walking their curbside, we saluted each other. The 1st time we passed walking (we were holding hands) they were at the house's front balcony, we both saluted and then i turned back, i saw they smiling at us. It was funny to try to imagine what they were thinking... maybe remembering their ol'good days. Who knows?! hehehehehehehe Oh...he has an interesting flag on the house's wall. Says: "We do not know you but we own you everything." Portraits a Canadian Soldier on his knee, holding his rifle and looking down. Lovely city...specially during the summer.
I love how you make videos of these places you visit. Helps people make informed decisions when they choose to move or settle in NB. Well done Les and Wendy🙏
I live in St.Stephan New Brunswick and my dad is the owner of the Pita Pit! I’ve lived in St.Stephan my whole life Edit: also the Greco in St.Stephan burnt down last night
The old brick Ganong building isn’t used as the factory any more. It’s only used as the factory store. The new factory is up towards the Charlotte Mall closer to the highway.
Finally got around to viewing this video (the counter registers 740 views). It was nice to see St. Stephen again. My wife and I have not been across the USA/Canada border since before the onset of the pandemic. Each time you’d pan the camera across to the Maine side I’d wistfully wave at the screen😀. Nice “visiting” with you folks … your videos are like little visits and so positive in outlook. Thanks again Wendy & Les, and hello 👋 again from Maine.
Hello, Peter in Maine. We were so accustomed to crossing the border to visit our southern neighbors whenever we wanted, and now it all seems like a bridge too far. We thank you for watching from across the river, and for your kind words.
I love this ongoing tour of cities and towns of New Brunswick! St. Stephen is a wonderful place to visit. Thanks for the great content. 2:36 -- interesting perspective; I have always approached the Border from the other direction (i.e. coming from Downtown). 8:35 -- The Winsome Inn is by far the nicest establishment in the whole St. Stephen-Calais metropolitan area. The price is reasonable and it has character. 8:45 -- Giant Tiger replaced a Sobeys that was severely damaged in a flood some years ago.
St Stephen can get very hot in the summer and gets a fair bit of snow in the winter. St Andrews and the Fundy Coast including Saint John are milder in the summer and get less snow in the winter. We have said in many of our videos that the seasons here follow the calendar for the most part. Spring isn't meant to be summer, but we feel the transition from winter to spring anywhere from late March to mid April.
The city in Maine is Calais! Both St Stephen and Calais were very bustling at one time. It's sad how depressed both areas are now! Both towns have awesome old stage/movie theaters, bowling alley's. Lots of shopping. Sad how these two areas have declined!
I'm not interested in the USA since Biden became the president, I'm more interested in the famous Ganong chocolate factory/museum and the surrounding area, I love New Brunswick says this Ontarian.

Do Ganongs still live in this mansion?

This may be cheaper on the US side but they are in US funds
The building you said was a parliament building was actually a bank!

Thanks. As long as there's chocolate, they could be making it at a gas station on the corner.

@@WeLoveSaintJohn Does St Stephen have alot of traffic from the USA ?
I would never live at the boarder
When you cross the border into Calais, you go into ET.
Yes, and at this time of year I much prefer having the Atlantic time zone so it doesn't get so dark so early.
What is ET ?
Extra Terrestrial ?

St Stephens look very boring. Which city in the states does it connect to?
It was a holiday so everything was closed. It's a very nice town in my opinion.
@Nathan Henderson thanks
