Thank you so much for sharing. I've been using sketch up a a while, draw pretty fast, but can't construct complicated stuffs as yet. Goad bless You Aidan, the world is a better place with cool people like you out there to share and help others.
it took me 2 hours to do this What a cool way and easiest way I have been watching some your videos they are all cool and easy to understand Thanks allot for all this
this vid is so helpful for me.. i am an architecture graduating student, currently doing my individual thesis... thanks a lot. "salamat"(thank you in filipino)
I was thinking about making my own video on creating roofs with follow me, but turns out someone already made it: just some things I would advice whoever is reading the comments: while creating your triangle, you can create a really huge one that touches any of the outter lines. That makes it easier to delete the undesired faces after intersecting. (by the way, you should click intersect with SELECTION instead of MODEL. If your model is too complex and full of faces, it'll mess it up). Oh, another thing you can do is, after intersecting the faces, just move the whole thing up, copy the back faces pointing down, delete the whole thing, and paste the roof back. You should be left with the desired faces only. :)
I realize this is a pretty old video, but it looks like some people are still finding it helpful. My one thing to add is that you may want to use "Intersect Selected" instead of "Intersect with Model" because you are getting extra unnecessary geometry on the bottom of the roof where the tops of your walls touch. Not a big deal for this example as it is not very many lines, but if you have interior walls with thickness, it adds up. Intersect Selected will ignore the walls.
Very very very helpful and many thanks to you for making this video and showing us how. I have been trying to figure it out for awhile now but gave up and guessing haha. Thanks again
@aidanchopra in the newer google sketchup version you can go along the edge of the surface with the follow me tool an accualy see what happens. this helps to understand better
There must be dozens of ways to build a roof. This one way is one of the two smartest ways to do it (the other one being starting from the narrowest edge instead of the widest). (there are lots of "way" in my post either !)
i done this and it left me with a hole in the roof, square hole and one part of the roof was a different size to rest of the roof, so i'll be practising this more, prephaps a design fault of the house on my part But anyway, Thanks man these video's are great, better then google tutorial's :) keep it up
This is a great tip for unilaterally equally pitched "hip" roofs, although why does the follow me tool only create a "hip" roof geometry? What if you wanted gables on end walls (no hip)...or, if the roof pitches were different on different legs on the plan?
Following this [fabulous, as always from Aidan] video, I had thought I'd done very well indeed ... until I triple-clicked on the remainder of my model and found that the front of my house/model had a gazillion odd triangular faces. But not regular faces, but seemingly faces without clickable edges. And sadly I'd saved my model before I realized this damage had occured. Aidan or some other user savvier than me, can anyone advise how to un-do this? Thanks!
You can also find various roof-making plugins here if you google "Ruby Library Depot." I can't remember which one in that list is the one I use, but it's much easier than this tutorial (no offense - thanks for the tutorial!).
i have a question...how can i specify the height of my roof ?....for example i want my roof to be 2.5 meters high from bottom of the gutter to the apex of the roof...i followed this tutorial but when i measured the outcome the height is reduced.thanks for the help
@@reshmageorge2766 thanks ,, i was pressing the keyboard shortcut for the protractor its acts differently , but if i click on it from the menu it works
Aidan - Learned so much from your book and especially these RUclips videos. I'm stumped with a "multi-level" hip roof. Can you give me some pointers? I have an aerial and a photo of the front of the house. I just want a basic model, but I can't get the hips to work right because there are multiple eave levels. Here is the front shot at this URL: 4-dominica (dot) com / photo.jpg (take spaces out)

Infinite Thank Yous! This has saved me so much time and frustration!
Thank you for explaining it in a way that doesn't make us feel like we're total 'dummies'! Getting the hang of this!
A big thank you Aidan.....! This program is just tooooo cool....!!
it took me 2 hours to do this
What a cool way and easiest way

Thanks allot for all this
Took me a few tries but I got it after rewinding the video a few times, have started using it a few days ago and every little tip helps, thanks.
this saved me an incredible amount of time, thank you!!
Roofing in few seconds this the best tutorial ever. Thanks again!!!!!!!
you've eased so much frustration on this follow me complex hip roof thing!!! THANK YOU!

Thanks for the vidoes, I am going to get the book ASAP. Very helpful indeed.

Thanks! I bet this would have lots of other applications for other projects too.
Thanks. VERY helpful... instant hip roof (almost). I'm on day 2 of using sketchup. I did what the video a couple of times before I tried.
i done this and it left me with a hole in the roof, square hole and one part of the roof was a different size to rest of the roof, so i'll be practising this more, prephaps a design fault of the house on my part
But anyway, Thanks man these video's are great, better then google tutorial's :) keep it up
what does it mean when it crashes when doing the intersect faces?
Thanks a lot!!! This is extremely useful tut. Keep on good work))
Do you think that people would be able to answer your question better if you typed upside up?
This is a great tip for unilaterally equally pitched "hip" roofs, although why does the follow me tool only create a "hip" roof geometry? What if you wanted gables on end walls (no hip)...or, if the roof pitches were different on different legs on the plan?
as always most tutorials never seem to be useful in the real world.

you are a good teacher
Does this solidify the inside so that you can see all faces in a gaming engine?
this is super effective! thanks.
How do you specify the pitch???
thank you soo much! 😁
Thanks, You are Great....
thanks! Learning something new everyday

This video is very helpful, Thanks :)
Nice job! I hate when you try to erase the unneeded crap you erase the needed things
Brilliant! Thanks a lot
Thanks alot man! great help.
big help thanks men
Thank you!!
What fun! I take it the Follow Me tool had the effect of creating a 30 degree slope off all the edges?
Nah, I know, it's just magic. ;-)
use the plugin instant roof , it is less difficult .
THANK YOU
1:50 can someone explain how to do this angled 30deg line , when i do this the whole building movies
Probably you would have used ROTATE instead of PROTRACTOR
@@reshmageorge2766 thanks ,, i was pressing the keyboard shortcut for the protractor its acts differently , but if i click on it from the menu it works
Thnx. Really helped
my saviour !!!

HEY! my house's roof looks like that!
Thank you! Made it hahaha
Useful :)
Follow me is my best friend and my worst enemy. It's so helpful, but so annoying.
And Ctrl-Y to redo
not happening
Repitition is key for learning."
And repetition is the key to spelling haha.
(I take it you're American)
google sketch up restarts my computer man gahh
I'm guessing that sarcasm is a new thing to you then... lol
There is an easier way to do it than that
Please stop nervously twiddling the model.
I notice most tutorials do that - it's really annoying because you have to try to separate what is nervous twiddling from what you're supposed to do.
