Failing Bees In A Dying Mississippi Town

- Photos at the end of this video are from several towns in Mississippi including Bassfield, Columbia, Clarksdale, Gulfport and others.
This honey bee hive removal was done on August eighth 2023. I had a home for these bees to go to originally but since one hive was queenless at the time of removal and the other rolled their queen during the removal, I just took them home and combined them with a couple of my colonies. My friend who was supposed to get them didn't have access to a replacement queen and In August I don't turn loose of any of mine so there was no sense in dropping them off at his place. This coming spring I'll help him catch a swarm.
It is true that I took two samples of bees from that left side colony to test for mites and neither sample had any mites. That was not what I expected to find on a weaker looking colony.
I repaired the interior wall as well as the rotten trim around the outside of the window in order to prevent a reinfestation.
On my return trip home that evening I passed through Columbia, MS and got Chinese food which is where I took that night shot of the take-out restaurant.

Always amazes me how you handle bees as calmly as you do. Enjoyed the town pictures, kinda sad that between our own government and China that this is what our rural towns have become. Thank you for sharing your journey with us.

I removed Bees for one year, but had such a hard time giving them away and keeping them alive. It was so hot in Texas. I got a little disappointed I lost so many colonies.
You wouldn’t have any trouble giving them away to me but I’m all the way in Kentucky
Most people don't realize everything about the cut out business is tough.
@@loucilehall9281 I don't know what part of Texas Ray96744 lives in but where I live in Texas most of the cut outs and swarms I've done have Africanized genetics. You may not want them.

Good idea, consolidating the colonies. Poor little queen, sad she didn't make it, but such is the life in a bee colony. And as always, excellent photography, I really feel like I'm right there with you, driving through these little towns. Thank you, Randy!

Great video. I love how quiet it is out in the country. I would say the whole building is putting off a heat signature with the heat advisory in place. Lol!!!
If the property wasn't in such a rundown town it would be a nice place to have.

I figure leave the healthy colony for last so they spend less time in a vacuum or temp box being less disrupted. Plus the big one being down, you could rip and roar thru that one......Well, now we see the dead queen and the drama, plans have changed...Some of your best photos of late of that town!! Nice!!

Seeing Your videos of those little towns brings back memories of driving all around exploring southern Mississippi when stationed at Kessler AFB in 1961,62 . I thought there was dodidly squat there then , Now there" Aint SHITE" !!
You got to see south MS in it's wilder days.

They were combined with other colonies.
That colony on the left was huge, well at least the comb they had. How often do they ball the Queen?
It’s super rare for them to ball a queen during a cut out. I’ve probably only seen it happen three or four times.

Great video as always and you seem to be taking things up a notch or two. I would think you made the right decision on which hive to remove first, I have schooled myself watching you so that just makes since. I don't think I could take heat like that anymore though, the tune you had playing at first reminded me of 'The Way' by Fastball and seemed fitting for how hot it was! Your photography always takes me back to when times were more simple, and the worries were too. Thanks for sharing the great video!

But if I had done it, I would’ve thought you would have to complete the first one that you opened.
Then open the second one and captured them while keeping them separated.

My hometown in Canada is a ghost town...but it deserved to be. A few nasty people with personality issues tried to overlord everyone so people just left, there are many many other towns close by. The worst one now is the mayor of a whole maybe 20 people and even less livable houses. She always wanted to own the town, now she's welcome to it, there isn't 1 store left and not even a post office. Hope you're happy Melba, lol, took you 50 years but you got your town and no one cares and never did!!
Other dying towns make me feel sad, especially in beautiful places. I don't know why it is that the most beautiful places just get pounded on by weather.
I have one of those "varroa test bottles" in my kitchen used for storing canned beetroot after opening just got it at the supermarket. Pretty funny case of re-labeling there.

I grew up in Moss Point.... lived across the gulf toward NO... really miss it but its just to damn hot and humid for me.

I do keep track but there isn’t much variation.

Most around here are Italian which are pretty docile.
I would have done the same....except I would have put the wood back up on the 'good' hive.
Having them both open might make them more sustainable to robbing.

I wouldn't merge them...I can't ever accept to lose a queen/colony.
I would have give the queenless hive that queen cell + some capped brood from the strong hive.
Probably given the weak hive some eggs incase they wanted to make more peanuts.
It’s the beginning of the video and you’re already soaked in sweat. I don’t recall seeing that many roaches around a hive before
I would not have opened them both at the same time. I would have looked into the big one but not taken the wall off. I would take the one with the Queen so she didn't get lost or run & hide in the wall. I would hope you had 2 vacuum buckets ... one for each hive. I suppose you could put that Queen cell in with that weak hive when you box it up. But I want to make more hives.

I could if we were framing the combs. The cells were very new though and would have likely dried out in the cut out process

Randy, First off...Thank you for another great video. While not a bee keeper yet, i would love to get involved. Regarding the dead queen do you think she would have survived if you had removed that hive first ? Usually you catch her and put her in clip. Would that have been enough to save her ?

Watched a few new beekeepers that are doing the copycat of the veteran keepers like yourself.
It drives me nuts to see how badly they make mistakes and give the wrong information but act like they’re experts.
What’s your opinion on many of these new novice beekeeper channels?
Hey, great to see you back. It’s amazing how many beekeeping channels there are that I don’t even know about. Someone whom I’d never heard of commented on one of my videos the other day and they had 20,000 subscribers. That means they’ve been at it a while. Funny enough I don’t get to see many small beekeeping channels. RUclips puts more travel and photography videos in my feed than anything. They know what I like to watch.
I don’t really mind the misinformed much unless they’re an unapologetic know it all. Those people irritate me. The ones who give crap information because they just haven’t figured it out yet don’t really bother me. They usually don’t have a lot of viewers while they’re figuring things out.
There are some out there who have given bad information for many years. I don’t mention them in any social media because I don’t want to be associated with them.
I would deal with which ever colony I opened first, one at a time. So I wouldn't be in a position to compare and pick weak vs strong.
You do a good job I probably would’ve took care of the one you opened first then open the other one with that being said you’ve done it a long time so I know you know what you’re doing if it’s cool with you I would like to hear the reason from opening both at the same time so I can understand the method
If only they would design a cap that had a portion that would shade your eyes for you! I bet they could market it to baseball players! Nobody steal this idea!! 😂😂😂
How can you already ses that it is queen less on the 2nd hive. What are the things I can look at to see that on my hives?
No brood at any stage and low numbers for the size of the hive shortly after the main flow.

Take the one you think has no queen. If there’s no queen combine them into one hive

I would have only done one at a time but I thought the two exposed would make a good thumbnail. It might if I knew how to use photoshop.
I am thinking maybe put them together if you can do that. I am not sure if that would cause a ruckus but it would help the weaker hive. Maybe. I am no beekeeper, just guessing. :)
How often does the queen end up in the varroa test container?
Haven’t had that happen yet. I’m sure someone has done it.
Overall, it looks like a nice place to live. Don't understand why it seems so empty.
It's never really been a thriving community in my lifetime but it's steadily in decline it seems. No good jobs for the average guy within forty minutes or so.
You should have looked after the first one and then opened the second, the first was easiest to frame up. Then you could have taken your time and been more selective with the second.
If you remove the weaker of the two first would the remnants give the robbers something to target while you remove the stronger colony? Obviously that hanging comb isn't going to leave a lot of remnants, but in a "normal" situation would/could it work that way?
To be honest do them have in general a high or low entrance? Btw your photo skills are really impressive

I would take out the smaller hive first, the smaller hive should be able to bee taken out with out a lot of honey mess to keep the robbing down as much as possible. jmho.
I'd take the one with zero mites first so not to contaminate the vac. But I don't know if you collected them in separate buckets.
I ended up putting them in the same vac bucket.
I would have taken thee smaller one since it is smaller and would have taken less time and protected the queen sooner. The larger could than be added to the smaller one. 😊
