    These videos make me so happy, especially the vlogs. This is an odd thing to say, but I just think it's really cool seeing how much fun you all have together. I'm a shy person and I hope to someday get over my nerves and make a close group of friends.

    Fun fact: Michael Keaton's character from the first movie has a completely different voice actor in this movie. I'm sure that has nothing to do with Keaton now being an Oscar nominee and soon-to-be supervillain who no longer has to resort to doing crappy family films to pay the bills. Nope. Not a thing.

    11:00 - Given months after Cars 3 what was revealed about Lasster and the atmosphere at Pixar at that time, this message makes a whole lot more sense as a written act of patting themselves on the shoulders while artists lower ranking were neglected and shamed in such ways.

    It's not marketing that made Disney do Cars 2...It's all Lasseter. The Sequels, the theme park land, the non-Pixar Planes spin-off, all Lasseter's idea. Also yay briberry! love her Character videos.

    There are so many things this movie could have done but that would have taken, you know...effort.
    1. Show Lightning actually ENJOYING acting as a teacher instead of it coming out of nowhere.
    2. Have Lightning be put on the new training methods before the crash and think that something's missing, the crash as a result of him not meshing with the training (instead of it being patronizing)
    3. Everything mentioned in the video about how Cruz's character could have been fixed. Everything.
    4. Show that Cruz's success comes from not just learning techniques from older racers but the theory she's learned as well. Show what WORKS from the newer training instead of being 'all this newfangled technology don't work'
    5. Imply the reason the villain loses is because Cruz has the ability to improvise and he doesn't, entirely based off melding both older and newer methods of training.
    Other complaints:
    - Did someone on the writing staff for this movie REALLY hate Sabermetrics becoming a thing in baseball?
    - "The numbers never lie" Any statistician with even minor credibility will acknowledge you can make the numbers tell you whatever you want.
    - We're just going to drop the whole PTSD thing from this movie, aren't we?

    I agree with the comment about the lemon cars in cars 2. it just felt really mean spiritied. it's a kids movie, I can forgive it for being stupid if it maintains the fun, but like the lemon cars was just sad. I felt sorry for them. they clearly have no health insurance or suppport and are like a minority being builled and the car universe discrimantes against them :(. such a weird concept. fuck that shit.

    It seems to me like every time Pixar hypes up the emotions of something, it tends to disappoint. For example before Good Dinosaur and Cars 3 the directors of those films were like “Oh my God, these movies are going to make you cry so much you’ll feel dehydrated.” Guess what? Both of those movies were weak. With Inside Out and Coco the directors of those movies said “This movie is mostly fun. Maybe you’ll cry only a little.” Try getting through either of those without crying.

    The attraction: All of the "Exploration Land" between Tomorrow and Fantasy (Matterhorn/Subs/Autopia/Monorail) is replaced by a second Cars Land for Disneyland. To distinguish it from DCA's, it will all be themed around Cars 2. Yes, that includes Monorail. Instead you'll have to ride your car into the park, drive it onto the monorail track and try to drive around the resort. Disneyland is not responsible for any resulting vehicular damage or fatalities.

    • @TonyGoldmark
      @TonyGoldmark  7 лет назад +2

      They could've easily recast Doc Hudson too, and I know that because THEY DID for Radiator Springs Racers. Corey Burton did Doc's voice in that ride, and it's so dead-on that the first few times I rode it, I swore Paul Newman must've recorded it before he died. An infinitely better match than Not George Carlin anyway. I don't object to recasting in principle, the favoritism here just personally pissed me off.

    I thought this film was fine, but yes, I agree fullheartedly with you guys on how little attention the car crash they devoted every ad to got and that cop-out ending, which completely contradicts the film's theme. Not to mention they really missed a serious opportunity with Jackson. He's basically what Lightning was like in the first film, which could have been a great way to help develop him, but not once does Lightning ever acknowledge that this guy is basically the embodiment of how he used to act.

      At least, it just a movie instead of, you know, art. We like criticizing art, but movies aren't art. It is just entertainment that doesn't create an emotional impact and doesn't deserve to be criticize beside the fact it is either good or bad art because that is the only criticism is worthwhile apparently.
      By the way, when people talk about representation in art, they are really criticizing the artform. Just so you know. I wanted to make this funny smartass comment to a bunch of your car puns, but I don't know a lot about cars, I really really hate this argument, and it generally shows that the person doesn't realize that they really do not think movies are art.

  • @crcoghill
    @crcoghill 7 лет назад +3

    oi! I'll defend Cars 2! sure, it's not as dramatic, heartfelt or even down to earth as the examples you made, but hey: *IT'S ABOUT CARS!!!* i wasn't gonna think it was gonna be the next Citizen Cane, i knew what i was getting into. also, most of the examples you shown were needless (mater goofing off), semi important (mater dealing with the info stashed under him from the spy car, possibly causing him to gas) or a plot point (yeah, him "leaking" was a plot point).
    also, in terms of the tone of both films: Cars 1 is about taking life slow and steady then just "eh~ Route 66 is the best~" and Cars 2 is about excepting those that are different than you and sometimes those people have unique abilities that help like say~ Mater's whole adventure during that movie! he wasn't a spy and his no scholar, but he helped by his knowledge of cars.
    look, Tony, I like your show when I like you, but when you're talking about a movie, at least try to make good points. heck I'll even agree that Cars 2 is the worst Pixar movie they have, but that still Pixar: it's still good.

    • @crcoghill
      @crcoghill 7 лет назад +1

      also, i don't beliece Cars 3 is "copying" Toy Story. Buzz wasn't trying to be the best, he was oblivious to him being a toy so had no reason to try. Woody was just worried his title as favorite toy would be taken. he was jealous.

    • @TonyGoldmark
      @TonyGoldmark  7 лет назад +7

      The moments I picked were the moments that made me ashamed to be watching the movie. Mater being a jackass for no reason, piss and fart jokes, and fucking State Farm product placement. Blech.
      My problem with the "taking life slow and steady" message of Cars is that the movie never really explains philosophically why that's BETTER than being a cool race car; the only virtues it portrays in it are tied inextricably to the aesthetics of small rural towns along route 66. And, hey, if that's your thing, that's cool, I see the appeal. It's an excellent feature-length commercial for route 66 road trips, but as a movie, if it had any universal themes, they didn't connect that well. There's a reason why people remember tearing up at "When She Loved Me" and Sulley telling Boo "Kitty has to go now" and the first five minutes of Finding Nemo and the first ten minutes of Up, but not so much at Cars' "Our Town" sequence.
      As for Cars 2, no movie about "accepting those that are different than you" should spend as much time as it does mocking "lemons" for being inferior. And being knowledgeable about cars shouldn't be an excuse to act like a complete jackass, which Mater does through the whole movie (and Lightning loses his first race because of it).
      Are those good enough points for you?

    I enjoyed Cars 3 better than Cars 2, which isn't hard, considering Cars 2 is pretty bottom of the barrel when it comes to Pixar films, but nothing has knocked The Good Dinosaur out of that lowest notch on the totem pole yet. Bland, uninteresting and nowhere near as enjoyable as I hoped it would be, at least Cars 3 delivered on the FUN aspect of Pixar movies.
    I have to disagree though, it is not suitable for children judging by how many restless kids were in my showing of the film. The adults had more laughs out of it than the kids, I really do not think this would be suitable for younger children, even the 9 and ten crowd might get bored with it. I was a day late and a dollar short to comment on this video, but better late than never.
    Also Coco will do exceptionally well because of the Frozen fanatics desperate for anything new, and as we all know Olaf's little adventure is playing in front of Coco because Disney ADVERTIZED it...How surreal was that? Nobody advertises shorts or makes them anymore.

    Man! Disney really loves to screw George Carlin! First they canceled the production of Totally Twisted Fairy Tales that had him as one of the voices, then they cast him in Tarzan 2 and Cars, and finally they don't pay tribute to him in Cars 2 after his death by hiring a bad impersonator of him for his character from the first Cars movie. I think we can all watch his stand up of Mickey Mouse more times to honor and respect him than what Disney has done to him.

    Cars 3 argubly isn't much a Comedy pers say, at least compared to 2 , and even 1. (No joke in this movie is as bad as "He did what in his cup?").
    It is more focused on the comeback story and slowing down by building that up, like what the first sort of did. It's just not quite dramatic or great enough to be a drama so it's a tad stuck tonally in that way.

I was 12 when the first one came out and I've kind of gotten used to the fact that most people and critics tend to disregard the franchise as legitimately good Pixar fare. I won't defend the second film but I will say that I find it far more entertaining than Brave, which just bored me to tears (even as a huge Pixar fan).

    Speaking of animated movies, there is a really interesting video by Rebeltaxi where he theorizes why Disney came to rely on 3d animation. You should really check it out.

    What do you think of the other mediocre Pixar movies?

    • @TonyGoldmark
      @TonyGoldmark  7 лет назад +2

      I think they're mediocre. Brave, The Good Dinosaur and Cars 3 are all mediocre (I know a lot of people put Monsters University in that list too, but I actually kinda liked it). Cars 2 is the only Pixar movie that ACTIVELY PISSED ME OFF.

      Flaws, or problems with them?

      Brave and The Good Dinosaur are both tonally all over the Goddamn place, and neither have interesting-enough stories to justify that. Likely a result of switching directors midway through production in both cases.

    Tho I will agree it's still esoteric I believe the message to Cars is less "isn't Route 66 awesome" and more "get your head out of your ass and appreciate the bigger picture." Lightning learns to stop focusing on just winning and enjoying the energy of the race. He learns to stop focusing so much about speed and just enjoy the drive and the places it takes him. Route 66 itself is actually a decent allegory for this, as Sally explains that back in the 50s driving wasn't about getting to a destination. It was about enjoying the ride along the way. "The road didn't cut through the land. It moved WITH the land."

    "I don't understand why people dislike 'CARS'...cartoon cars have been around since the 1940's!"
    And they have never been a source for a full FEATURE FILM, with good reason. They are dull as hell, unimaginative in design, and limited in appeal only to fans of CARS.
    The film series IS the weak point in PIXAR's legacy, for just those reasons.
    "Hey, let's slap a big, obvious face on a car...instant character for a film!"
    Plus, Larry the Goddamn Unfunny Cable Guy.
    'Nuff said.
    'CARS' sucks.
