- Vocal Coach Reacts To Duran Duran - Ordinary World - Live - Ken Tamplin
English new wave band Duran Duran ruled the 80s and were one of the most successful bands of the decade.
The band is named after a character in 1968 classic Barbarella starring Jane Fonda. The villain in the film was called Dr Durand Durand.
One of the main factors that launched their career was the video age. The introduction of the 24-hour music channel MTV gave the band a whole new outlet of exposure.
They were the first band to shoot with 35 mm film, which gave a much more polished look than was standard at the time.
The band were also innovators with their use of video technology in their live shows.
They became so popular that Milton Bradley released the Duran Duran board game Arena, which was named after their live album released in 1984.
They were also rumored to be Princess Diana's favorite band.
The band's popularity had begun to decline by the end of the 80s but after mixing up the band members and their music style, they experienced a resurgence in the early 1990s.
The band has gone on to sell over 100 million records worldwide.
Today I'll be reacting to the song "Ordinary World". I hope you enjoy it and please share with me your feedback!

The real meaning of the song is about a friend who died, not about duran duran career. This is from an interview to Simon Le Bon:
'This is a Question for Simon: When I write poetry its very healing. Is there one song you would say was the most healing or therapeutic for you to write and how did you get to the point where you could share such emotional stuff with all of us? Reine
“Yes Kerry Ann, ‘Ordinary World’ is the song which is part of the trilogy of ghost songs I wrote; the others being ‘Do you Believe in Shame’ and ‘out of my mind’. DYBIS & OW both refer to the pointlessly tragic death of a very dear friend some years back. In DYBIS I yearn to host whatever spirit there is left of my dead friend; in OW I finally free myself of the guilt and sadness that has come to haunt me in it’s place. nuff said? s”'
Gorgeous song , “Come undone” is another one of my favourites from “The Wedding Album”.
Out of all their great (and successful) tunes, Come Undone is by far my favorite. There's an awesome live version featuring the smooth voice of Lamya (RIP).

My Darkest Days do a killer cover of Come Undone
@@MrBabyBoa you should try My Antarctica from the liberty album i think its a masterpiece.
I love that song, the music and lyrics are so cathartic when I’m going through heart break
Simon has said in interviews the last 10 years or so that he has really worked with a voice coach on his breathing, his core fitness, diaphragm, etc. And I think it shows. His live voice at almost 60 is more powerful and controlled than at 25. PS, there are much better versions of OW live out there. 😃
Simon is such an underrated singer. He still sings most of their songs in their original key, with only a few exceptions. He's a great songwriter too! Also, John Taylor is a bass beast.
Great band, great tunes!
Duran duran are melodic gods their catchy melodies made me a fan for ever . They deserve to be in the rock n roll hall of fame.
They're awesome, depecheddurand!
And the lead singer had such a beautiful high ballad tone!
AGREE. Simon Le bon has always had wonderful tone, pitch and is the complete package as an entertainer. I think its fair to say that's why he and the band emerged and survived so long. It always come back to the quality of the singing. Ken got my curiosity up and so I looked up on YT other Duran Duran live gigs recently and I must say, he STILL sounds darn good! I think the one Ken played here is about 9 years old or so.I could be wrong. I am officially stunned Simon has remained so unchanged vocally. That's likely because he trains his voice . When Ken says the proof is in the singing, he wasn't kidding. Can't wait what Ken has next for us. lol
We Duranies are the most loyal of fans. Their 50th Anniversary of Moon Launch at Kennedy Space Center was amazing. Back up singers are never necessary with our crowds. We sing 100% of their songs in stereo. Think you for acknowledging them.
😀
I love that this live performance sounds darn near like a studio recording. Simon’s vocals are clean.
I disagree. I was just mentioning this. I think the audio engineer or mixer guy whatever you call him needs to be fired. They are hindering their sounds. But, It still sounds half way ok.
That's a great song. I was in the rock camp that didn't like Duran Duran back in the day. Never listened to it properly till just now. Its great.Great lyrics, great chord changes and Simon le Bon is singing better than ever. Thanks for putting this up .
I'm glad you liked it, irishmusico!
@@kentamplin Cheers Ken. Your course is making a big difference for me. Thanks very much.👍👍
Back in the eighties I thought Duran Duran was alright but when I found out that this was their song my view of the group changed. Now I love all their music. “Say a prayer” is another good one.
i prefer Save a Prayer
Greg Ingram 😂
.Been a DD fan for a long time and this is easily one of the most beautiful songs they have. Remember staying up late in the UK to VCR them on live aid in '85
Awesome job as usual Ken. Agree, one of the most beautiful musical compositions. Very underrated.
Vince McConnell- Thanks!
Ken Tamplin Vocal Academy Love your work my friend. Great channel content.
@@vmac65 - Again...thanks!
@@kentamplin Ken, if you haven't seen/listened to this version of the song, it's a must. Go to 40:00 mark in video. Epic performance by Simon. Amazing voice 25yrs after original release. ruclips.net/video/VVWgnIC8mkg/видео.html
@@vmac65 excellent recommendation, especially since I put it there 😂
Durans back catalog is huge! If you want to really get to know this band you have to sit down and really listen to their albums and b-sides from the first to the latest with every album they change things up, they experiment with their music. It's always a joy when they release a new album cos what are we going to hear this time
😊
Duran Duran was one of those groups that you couldn't help but like. Even if you wouldnt admit it to your friends back then.
Nobody sings like Simon Le Bon. Magic.
Come Undone is my all time favorite. Takes me back instantly back to happier times.
Such an emotive piece of music. A beautiful melody and a killer bass line.
what I really like here IS he sings the entire song without asking the fans to sing it..PLUS to see the fans singing it on their own is awesome. That's when you know you done well.
as a kid of the 80s i was a huge duran duran fan back then. and i still get that feeling of sweet nostalgia when listen to one of their songs..
LesPeterGuitarJam - How could you not!!
well written ,well sang and played. Best live version I have seen, period.
Love this song it's like your right back in the 80s, Duran Duran cmon save a prayer was the signature tune in the 80s the song was everywhere.....
I’ve seen Duran Duran in concert numerous times. They always put on an amazing show. This was the song and the album that first really made me a fan of theirs. The photograph song I think you’re thinking of was “Girls On Film.”
Anthony LaMastra - Got it...thanks!
Anthony LaMastra Yep, which went nicely with the comedy Earth Girls Are Easy with Jeff Goldblum, Geena Davis, Jim Carrey, and Damon Wayans.
Duran duran is the best band that there ever was on this planet! So underrated and still going strong!
barchetta00 👍
Duran Duran has some really great songs. Ordinary Word is gorgeous.
I agree, celinhabr1!
This was the song that really showed this group was so much more than the '80s
A fav of mine as well and of course, their production has always been the best technology has to offer, then and now.
Omg blast from the past my teenage years
Gladys Oraham 👍
one of my favorite songs. thank you for doing these.
I love Simon and Duran Duran, you sing so beautifully and this song is gorgeous!!!!!!!!!!!!
your voice is so great even when you talk!!!!!!!!Bravo!!!!
Thank you, violinstudyingpiano!
I’ve always been a fan fan of Duran Duran and loved Save a Prayer and this song.
That's great, Tad!
Tricky little tune to sing. It sits right in the break for me. Another consistently great band live. I love when he did this with Pavarotti. Thanks Ken.
Seen them live many times.Simon is an explosive live performer like a M.Jagger of pop scene.Very energetic on stage and has a great control of his voice. He hits high notes flawlessly and almost never out of key.The live performances to this beautiful song are very hearfelt.
Ken I remember when was a kid was on a fairground ride, Hungry Like a wolf was playing they were such great memories and what an amazing talented band even now.
While I primarily listen to rock and metal, I do find a well-crafted pop rock song hard to resist. I listened to a number of "New Wave" bands in the early 80's including Duran Duran. I did see them in 1984 at the Rosemont Horizon in Chicago, what a fun concert. Some of my favorites from that era include "Save a Prayer," "Girls on Film," and "Rio." This actually may be their best track. It is a song that perfectly illustrates the irony of life.
Duran Duran, it brings so many great memories of my childhood, listening every day each and every one of their songs, and Ordinary World is my favorite one! 🤩👍🏻
Fantastic song.
perromanchado 👍👍👍
Ken, I never follow music trends and just enjoy excellent singers, musicians, like Duran Duran and Kool and The Gang! lol BTW you are a phenomenal teacher of musicianship, and vocals! . Thanks for letting us know the quirks and intricacies of these fabulous and talented individuals. I love Duran Duran's 'Save A Prayer', hypnotically beautiful tool!
I'm glad you enjoyed it, ElusvOptmst1!
I just can't help it, I really, really like Duran Duran.
I'm happy to hear that, 5speedMax!
A vocal coach reacts video where the vocal coach pulls out a guitar and plays the song by ear. RARE.
😊
A truly brilliantly crafted song.
Jay Lane 👍👍👍
Hi - interesting review my friend. First point i noted was 'its Simon Le Bon' not 'bow', and the song theme is not about lacking commerical success, its about 'loss' and finding your own way of adapting to find some kind of ordinary in a world full of shit. This song was inspired by Simons childhood friend who died of a drug over dose. He wrote a trilogy of songs about this particular loss (the other 2 - Do You Believe in Shame? + Out of My Mind). I liked your enthusiasm about this song - and you appreciated the intricacy of its arrangement, which was nice. Indeed, Duran Duran were huge in the 80s = and despite this being a big hit internationally, its far from inmy view their best work. You ought to listen to Do You Believe in Shame (was a single 1988 from the Big Thing album of the same year) as it has a brilliantly hypnotic feel coupled a masterclass in imagery and emotion in lyrics.
I agree he should listen to them in the order they were meant to be played they tell a story , awesome band I saw them in Vancouver in 2018
Beautiful Song wonderful love you DD ❤
Im 47 and they have been in my life since I was 7. Everyone knows it too! ❤
What an incredible tune . They have always been a fave of mine. Loads of talent on that stage
You got to be a genius to produce a track of this quality. Same goes for come undone . Two songs you never tire of hearing. In fact ,i appreciate these two song more today than i did back in 1993.
Come undone is one of my favorites. That and Serious along with Ordinary World.
Another band I enjoyed as a kid, but then I discovered heavy metal....I rediscovered my appreciation for Duran Duran as an adult. Still love both genres.
Yeah I'm fan from Duran Duran!!
Best Band in history.
Loved the commentary and of course Duran Duran ordinary world is literally my favourite ever song, loved this video Ken. ❤️
Fallenxxx Destiny- Thank you!
Live or otherwise its a great song ..you are correct Ken they havent lost their touch .....excellent , beautifully written and arranged...
Hallo Ken! You have a great knowledge about different music styles! Like this Song from Duran Duran and your comments! Have a nice Weekend!
Thanks Beatrice!
Great band !!!
Miriam Barbosa do Nascimento 👍
The UK was and is an amazing factory of talent - long may it continue!
I love this song
Omg, my teenage years came back like a fckn bomb, thank you. I was a huge Durannie. And I do agree with you a lot in this. Ty,again
Pia Svensson- They definitely have that affect on people!
I was effected good, shaped my entire music taste, they made me listen to rock, and suddenly I was a metalhead in the 90's,lol. Eased a bit since.
Oh, did the young ladies like them back then? I had forgotten that aspect of their early years. It must have been a small local thing.😉 Seriously, the damn screaming was deafening!!!
@@KCJAM1 young ladies? Lol
Great choice of song. Strong writing contribution of former Zappa guitarist Cucurullo. Usual easy intuitively talented (little technique) singing from Simon. Like other Duran songs, difficult to emulate without running out of gas! Amazing (and perhaps most interestingly) that in terms of their looks, they experienced a quasi-Beatle mania phenomena in the 80s. The guitar solo is an example of perfection. Cheers
Ken, I can imagine how busy you are with your family, buisness, teaching, and Vocal reaction videos but I would love to see your guitar work too, maybe some guitar reaction in the future👍
David Lane- Thanks for your suggestion!
Ooh yeah! I second that! 🎸
Duran Duran was amazing, and this was such a beautiful song. Loved it before I really knew who Duran Duran was!
Thank you, Ken! I just LOVE this song! Such a beautiful song! I sang an acoustic version of this but the instrumentation that Duran Duran has here is amazing! Sweeps me away! ❤️🎶
Thank you for reviewing Duran Duran. They are my favorite band of all time. You also may like "Come Undone".
Duran Duran were the first band I saw live in 1983 and then I was fortunate enough to see them again in 93. I prefer the later ballads to the 80’s ones that I loved when I was a kid, weird how our tastes change. I’m the same with The Cure, their later stuff grew on me as I get older and I prefer that now to the earlier stuff 😊 thanks Ken.
Nicky - Funny how that works!
There's a great version of this floating around with Lamya, very beautiful
I'll have to check that out, Ahardcorejedi!
@@kentamplin It's an old video, but it checks out :}
Look up when they sung it on mtv unplugged
Beautiful ❤️
Always loved this song, of the "Durans" as I call them. They also have some kind luxury aura around them as I see them and feel them. They are living history.
What song writing talent! Even their British accents enhance the incredible melodies. Thanks Ken!
Gracias y saludos cordiales desde Mallorca para ti también Ken tamplin felicidades
Muchas gracias Batallador1957!
When i first dated my wife in the 80's she was and is a huuuuge fan of Duran Duran but i wasn't except for Ordinary world, come undone and especially save a Prayer
I like Duran Duran. Many people forget that many of their records were produced by Nile Rodgers. Bassist John Taylor has one of Bernard Edwards basses. They got it going on!!!
Love this song. I think it is their best song.
Beautiful!
Great song and great reaction. As much of a fan as I am, I had never pieced together what the lyrics were about. I’ve heard many explanations, but yours is the most spot on.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Come undone is my favorite song by them however they have many great songs..the rythm section on that song is so awesome..
I agree, Don!
Such a natural voice, like he barely has to try and this huge, amazing, perfect music comes out of his mouth! 😃
One of my very favorite songs! I have always loved this song and always will! I Totally agree with what you were says Ken .. great video!
I'm glad you agree, Kelly!
Its a beautiful song, and an 80s teenager, this is better than anything from the 80s
😀
Simon Le Bon’s voice recovered amazingly well after losing part of it a few years ago. He put in the work and came back stronger than ever. Great review, Ken! Would love to join your training.
P.S
I am a Duran Duran true fan! Simon le Bon is my dude. My husband, Thom, was like " Ken won't have anything on him. Simon isn't that great a singer." I was MORTIFIED! 😂 SO...thank you for showing them love, and creating a bit of ' face ' for me today! Bahahaha!
Reflex is a great song... so glad you reviewed this GREAT song... Thanks Ken!!!
Duran Suran , The real Deal --- Still after 40 yrs
You always hit the right bands Ken. Simon Le Bon is an excellent singer and John and Andy Taylor are phenomenal musicians!
john taylor
I don't want to rehash previous comments I've made, but, this song is another that is defining my life right now. My late wife grew up in England and always had an affinity for Duran Duran. I didn't know what the "Ordinary world" lyrics meant before today, but, they have an entirely different meaning to me. Masterful lyric writing that doesn't confine the listener to the original idea of the writer. Another great video,Ken. Thank you.
I love all the albumes of the band in the 80's.
My fav song by DD.. this is dark and I like it
Great video
Great review
Bn a fan since 1980
Seen them 15 times
And I'm proud of the fact that they came from country
And made it big in your country.
Great vid 👍👍👍
I'm glad you enjoyed it, Andy!
The song was about how Simon coped with the death of a friend ..not about past successes,..
Thanks for letting us know, alan!
Yes...true
Love Simon’s voice, which has only gotten better with age. Love Duran Duran! Thank you for this!
Ken..you dont know how i so much love and admaire very very much this band.so love them man!
All the members of the band..looking good.
This and Come Undone are their best songs.
Love them ! As well their rougher songs as ballads... I hope you will do more eighties. It was such a magical period, eventhough it reminds me how old I've become... ;)
amdresselaers- Haha, same here!
Ken has the best job of picking all these different artist that have spanned the last couple of decades. We have the best job of being participants alongside Ken.
I also wanna thank you for reacting to my beloved Abba's 'Does your mother know"(though i was expecting to do the complete set to it's sequencer in transition 'Hole in your soul") I feel greatful and proud whenever a rockman apreciates Abba's pop majesty. You are such a nice person.
Aw, thanks Alexio! Rock on!
Great song Ken. I remember when this cane out was when I first started to appreciate their music and then re-experienced their 80s stuff. Very enjoyable!
Got to be one of them most perfect pop songs ever written.
The studio version is even more beautiful! Love this song! I've seen Duran Duran in concert many times and they still put on great shows!
That is great to hear, Mari! 😀💜
Great stuff! Red did an awesome cover of this song that kept the overall beauty with a slightly heavier rock ballad arrangement.
Love the song Ken and thank you for doing the song again makes me what to start singing
Patty Heckathorn- Please keep singing!
The song is not about the lost success. Simon wrote the song for a dear friend of his that suddenly died. He actually wrote a trilogy for his friend: Do You Believe in Shame? (1988) - Ordinary World (1993) - Out Of My Mind (1997). Ordinary World was very succesfull. It reached #1 in US and #6 in UK
Awe you impress me everyday ken. Great guitar. These vids make me happy.😊😘✌🤙
Great Job Ken! Duran Duran is a great band. Awesome to see you on guitar too , great work man! I really like your channel here! Keep it up!
The sentiment of this song is on par with, for example, "That was Yesterday" Lou Gramm/Foreigner That was yesterday, had the world in my hands, but it's not the end of my world, just a slight change of plans... 'The Reflex' is the one for me and mostly because, well, it's a great tune, but the videos were all the rage too and the new frontier of music was the addition of visuals and that wave coming out from over-head was so visceral and brought you into the song and the music and the performance etc. THIS was a great CLEAN performance, as well, DURAN DURAN what a band!! Thanks, Ken
Jack Kaufman 👍👍👍
NIce observation and commentary. If you were not bothered about enjoying duran duran in their peak era - like i was, in which i recieved continous ridicule, you could hear an array of diverse and varied styles on every album, and of course Le Bon is a brilliant vocalist and intelligent lyricist. They had and still do have something unique, and special. For example, as Ken said, they are an exception to the rule of sticking to one format of song as they would never do that on album. They can put out a masterclass in slow synth track, while on the same album produce a masterclass in rock ie New Religion and the Chauffeur come to mind among many others. Ironically, many of the guys who riddiculed my as a youngster in teh 80s actually admitted many years later they too loved duran duran but couldnt admit it. I find that funny, and its happend a lot of times in my experience. Anyway, nice comments.
I remember when they went on their hiatus and when I heard the debut of this song of course I had to buy the cd!
