Ugghh its so exciting to hear this from multiple shows because this was genius. Definitely a lighter approach, and its soo nice that half the song is already in speaking range so only like a minute worth high intensity crazyy belting. This performance still had all the energy as always but with more mixed voice and seamless transition in the modulation and its all a little bit quieter not as many squalls, definitely some softer onsets with those damn lea michele vocal flips into a belt and using those ee vowels as grace notes to sneak in a little bit of head voice singing "halwyas be" and "hI'm independently" and "hliiife" but you literally couldnt even tell unless you're a vocalist.
Some singers/performers enjoy it oddly enough. I was present for the debut performance of the song at previews back in March, that performance is posted, and their interpretation has evolved. It's the same song, but they are different ways to sing it to keep it new and exciting!
I think theatrical singers are kinda mentally required to do that. Lol. For example, Jackie Burns is the longest running Elphaba from Wicked for 1.300+ plays? Can you imagine singing Defying Gravity over and over again for 1.300+ times?
Alex Newell as "Lulu" sings "Independently Owned" from the Broadway Musical "Shucked."
Date of Performance: May 19, 2023.

Love it!!! Hope to see the show in June when I'm in NYC.
Got any audio of her understudies?
I love it, much. But I could only Imagine how they hate singing the same song over and over for quite some time.

Alex has already said they’re fine with the idea of singing it for the rest of their career
