Isn't this more of a bandaid repair? I mean, YES, the gap is filled if you slip in that piece of maple, and it may buy the client some more time, but the integrity of the bridge is compromised and probably (at the very least), needs to come out and new bridge needs to be fabricated.

Are the rest of the bass strings still under tension? Is that preventing it from closing with the clamps?
and where is the repair...?
I would probably just pour in some epoxy and re-drill the holes.
