He's a real class act and I've made sure to thank the spotters and judges during my contests ever since because it felt real good to get that appreciation after a long day spotting and loading.
I never understood why machines aren't used for spotting... Chains, lever arms... Something. Lifters can be paralyzed because spotters weren't up to the job... 😳😳
I still can’t believe how primitive this setup is. A basic fucking stand that shakes, no safeties to drop the weight on. You’d think just one of these disasters would be enough for them to swallow their pride and figure it out, but no.
Safeties dont work in comp because it doesnt allow a clear view for the side judges. If you want safeties then you better be fine with spotty judging and unearned white lights on squats
@@Shane-nd7biare you for real? Fucking set up some cameras then. If there's any doubt, judges can take another moment to deliberate. Is this really the best we can do in 2024?
@EmeffMonkey Cameras? Right off the top of my head that's going to be a wiring mess, spotters will have to adjust to a possible unsafer position to give cams a clear view which would be worse. Depends on the wraps… length m, thickness and wrap style. If you can bear the pain you can indeed get upwards of 100 from the longer wraps some feds allow. In the 25 years I’ve been on and around the sport equipment tech has gotten “better” allowing more poundages with minimum risk of blowouts. I switched to strongman and the equipment is rampant there too. I’m just an old fart so I’ve always gone raw but it’s a personal decision and preference.
For me they add about 60 lbs. I‘ve squatted 225 kg with wraps in competition, and 192.5 kg raw in training. I don‘t think I could have gone above 200 kg raw at the time. Remember though that in the IPF equipped division they‘re not just wearing knee wraps, they‘re also wearing squat suits, and those can help quite a bit more.
His squat overall is hella unique. The way he breaks his hips and his power coming out of the whole. It's like he developed an entirely new squat style
Because this " supportive" gear Jetsons you with a weight you can't actually lift and you're left trying to lockout this weight you can barely even support. Its all gear and juice. And yes, I competed in the sport for 10+ years before I'm accused of being an armchair quarterback.
@@crazyjackal55 it's funny you say weight you can't actually lift as if Ray didn't end up lifting even more weight in competition than in this video, but good try at invalidating his lifts

I have been going really heavy on squats every week for so long now. Not one rep maxes, but still really heavy. They are going insanely heavy, but they still make me kind of afraid of getting hurt. I squat alone, so I just can't imagine what would happen if my leg blew out like one of these guys. It went on the guys neck forward. I mean someone can potentially die if things go completely wrong. It was pretty insane when Fredrik Smulter broke the world record in denmark ipf world championships. First guy over 400kg in bench. He had to do something extraordinary to win and put 30kg over his personal best in the last lift, and nailed it

I still don´t understand why the fuck are human spotters the only safety measure used in this type of competition. Pretty much any average gym will have better, safest squats racks. Full cage, safety pins, hooks, ANYTHING that can catch the bar. For example the accident at 2:04 was pretty much instant, no human has the reaction to catch that, and the accident could have been waaay worse
Why is there no safety involved with these lifts even beginners need to squat in a squat rack these guys are lifting crazy weight as if the guys standing on the sides are any help What so ever these are professionals in a professional event and not one person is thinking about this crazy !! ⚠️ 🏥
It makes no sense at all. Spotters aren't catching 400+ kilos when something suddenly snaps. Or worse, equipped bench with 600+, if a pec tears or an arm breaks, there's no chance in hell. Most likely death.
I've thought the same with regards to bench and squat, this is absurd, irresponsible and an accident waiting to happen. Evidently the number of deaths that have happened outside of competition isn't enough for them to force a rule on safety racks so it's probably going to take someone dying an awful gnarly death in competition for safety to be taken seriously in many federations.
@@SIenderplier you clearly dont know anything about powerlifting if you dont think that safety is a top priority. Spotters are meant to help assist you if you fail a lift. It’s in the rule book that you can get warnings for dumping the bar. But you can’t expect for anyone to to catch the bar on a freak accident, not with serious weight. Once more than 220kg is loaded two extra side spotters are added on the squat for this reason, not enough for 3 people to handle, you can’t do too much more than 5 spotters. That’s why it’s in the rule book that you’re not allowed to dump the bar because it’s dangerous for everyone envolved you’re supposed to stay with the bar and spotters assist you up. Granted, just like in any sport, IPF is infamous for having bad spotter accidents but these clips aren’t a showcase of this, these clips are big dudes squatting big weights, nobody is freakishly catching 400kg+ when a bar is dumped.
It´s the guy that was wearing a squat suit and a slingshot at raw worlds; he ran to avoid getting caught even though running alone made him look even more suspicious lmao
I think the problem is visibility for side judges and the fact that when the bar bends and the guys Grip Wide, the chances of crushing your hand on the safety or hitting plates on the safety at the bottom(throwing you off balance) is pretty high. There's probably a good solution but given that powerlifting is not a high revenue sport... kinda doubt it will change soon.

Can anyone explain to me why the squat rack isn’t bolted to the floor?!? At these weights how do they justify not having it bolted. Or welded to a 1/4 - 1/2 plate of steel that the athlete is standing on that covers the floor say 10’X10’. At an official competition like this they would only need one and it could come in pieces. Wild.
Equipped powerlifting is a joke. With all the aids they have helping them lift the weight why not just have the spotter help you lift it while he’s there too. Why not? Louie Simon’s touched on this, he said “I don’t train for raw powerlifting, I don’t want a big squat I want the biggest squat.” The heaviest raw squat IS the heaviest squat!
