What Does an Illegal GMRS Repeater Sound like.

  • In the United States, GMRS (General Mobile Radio Service) operates on specific frequencies allocated by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). GMRS channel 5 is designated for simplex communications, meaning it's intended for direct radio-to-radio communication between users within range, without the use of repeaters.
Using a repeater on GMRS channel 5 without proper authorization or licensing would likely be considered illegal. Repeater operation on GMRS requires a separate FCC license, and the frequencies used for repeaters are different from those used for simplex channels.
Operating a repeater without the proper authorization can result in fines, license revocation, and other penalties imposed by the FCC. It's important for GMRS users to understand and comply with the regulations to ensure legal and responsible use of the radio spectrum.

I don't mind, personally, I play with the big boys; but since you don't like to be told what to do. I suggest if you do this maybe you as the repeater operator should use your own CTCSS codes rather than being a clown and hogging 1 of only 7 Simplex channels. Common curdiousy is just not common anymore, this is why we need our overlords to fine folks. Living 11 years in Japan they have common sense and cultural rules, because of this they have VERY few rules, regulations and laws imposed on the public. So something is simply as using a ham radio without acquiring the license and getting clearance to do so could involve trouble from the wall. At least once. I think they are just mad because their hobby has become highly obsolete. Its like studying shorthand from the 30s. Nobody uses that, nobody needs to know how to write shorthand... when steno machines exist... when recording devices exist and speech to text exist... when AI exist.
Its one of those "this is cool!" things that some people find the need to jump on. Highly regulated, price prohibitive for anyone thats trying to actually do anything with it since 2M is obsolete now that 10M is covered under Novice licenses and doesnt require moris code testing. But then you get into the need for expensive amps, big antennas and towers to put those antennas on... if you are wanting to actually talk to anyone.
GMRS is for those of us that want to use a functional/quality handytalky without all the nonsense restrictions. I dont see a problem with the repeater. So what its on a simplex channel. Just dont use the repeater offset...
Though, whats even the problem? Its not "unusable" Its MORE usable. You can talk further than you could before... you arnt going anywhere in the city without a repeater. I talked to my dad simplex with a long whip on my handheld and got about 3 miles max range. A repeater in the top of my 60 foot trees would reach his house 20 miles away and more. Anyone else could use it, i give zero fucks. Its not like anyone else has a repeater here... since nobody uses radios to talk, because we all have cell phones...

Okay yes according to the band plan, gmrs 5 is supposed to be simplex. However the device he is showing you. Is simplex. That's why they call them Simplex repeaters. Because it is recording the audio that it receives and then retransmitting the audio after it receives it. A true repeater is a duplex device meaning it has one frequency for the input one frequency for the output. So that wallet is receiving it is also retransmitting at the same time. Both of these systems do work to extend the range of two-way Communications equipment. However the the Simplex repeater or what is commonly referred to as it actually very useful. And the fact that it can be deployed easily without having to deal with Toon filter cavities duplexes and any number of other devices that end up in a repeater system to isolate the transmitter and receiver. Also it can be used in a portable or mobile operation. These have been used by commercial radio companies by the military and by amateur radio operators since the invention of digital voice recording circuits, actually before that they did have one that used Magnetic Tape but it didn't work very well and wore out fairly quickly. So to sum it up what he's actually demonstrating is a Simplex use of a Simplex frequency truthfully his beef is the fact that there's no operator most likely where that radio is. And no one is controlling it and turning it on and off when it's not in need. But under the fcc's definition that would still meet at a simplex use. Because the radio must receive the signal pause and then we transmit the signal and it all takes place on the same frequency. The definition of simplex. I do see his frustration with these devices, as they are readily available by any number of Chinese import apps or Amazon eBay or whatever. You just plug it into your boof Fong handheld, and by the way may or may not be useful for the service you're actually using it on. You cannot use any of those chinese-made radios in the commercial land mobile Radio Service frequencies. They do not meet the FCC requirements they're only usable by amateur radio operators because of the wide tolerances that they're given. Even in that case some of those radios exceed the tolerances that ham operators are even allowed to deviate from.

Having a single band radio keyed up all the time which repeats everything people say, is considered a jammer in reality. Think of a small rural community where most folks aren't hams or only have the lower cost simplex GMRS radios. This lowers cost to the community to have an effective emergency communications system. The simplex repeater owner may have access to the EOC via VHF and can send welfare messages via HF. This kind of setup is only a problem for ham Karens getting in a control freak frenzy.

    • @allen_steel1236
      @allen_steel1236 3 месяца назад +1

What is actually showing you is a Simplex re-transmission system. It's not a true repeater. Because the radio operates on the same frequency. It must receive the signal pause key the transmitter play the signal back. Yes it does repeat the audio. But it does not repeat it to another frequency which would be the definition of a repeater and what the FCC is referring to in the band plan. This device could be used with any power level. Because it is not a modification of the radio or the antenna system it's just a module plugged into the microphone and speaker. That does not make it a violation of any rule other than it is annoying. When people leave these things on and forget that other people do use the service. Until we crack down on the excessive importation of these radios. That come pre-programmed and there's no FCC enforcement of the service. Eventually it will just turn into what citizens band has become or worse. At least with Citizens Band 11 m, it's a little more difficult to get high powered mobile and amplifiers. With the current gmrs system any surplus UHF two-way radio can be returned to work on those frequencies. And unless you're working on something that was made in the 80s it's going to be computer programmable so there's not a whole lot of work to be done. With a click of a few Keys you could have a 110 watt mobile if you wanted it. For the ultimate Rarity in UHF there were some base stations, that put out up to 500 w. They're rare, and one of them are out there probably are in need of repair or are still in operation. But should somebody find one and put it on the are unless the FCC wants to stop then there's nothing that's going to stop them. Also there's a whole lot of companies that make RF power amplifiers including the really wide band dirty nasty ones that will amplify from HF all the way up to almost microwave. There are available really cheap on the internet. Those are also helping destroy the radio service. Assuming everyone followed the rules gmrs would work quite nicely. But since everyone thinks a small little minor violation isn't a problem even though everybody's making little minor violations it becomes a cumulative problem

It’s funny though, GMRS users think you take it too seriously, and sad hams are giving you crap for worrying about GMRS because “it’s inferior”. Radio is and always has been a utility. It’s an asset. Do I look down on ham radio hobbyists? No. I don’t care who has what hobby. I have plenty of hobbies. But I absolutely look down on elitist radio hobbyists who think their free time money pit HOBBY classes above the utilitarian service that’s used for getting real work done and contributing to society in a real way. Sad hams provide no worth to society. And then there’s those GMRS users that look down on you for caring about it, but the reason they’re defensive about it is because they’d absolutely do the same thing. If everybody thought that way, there would be no usable radio service.

I've been a ham for close to 30 years. On fun thing we do is traffic nets. They train us for large scale traffic handling, but they give us a chance to a large group of friends in an organized fashion.
I've seen lots of hams involved in emergency response, message handling for individuals and military families, contests, community events. As I just posted above, foxhunting for search and rescue. One group hunted down powerline transformers and other sources of powerline noise. When fixed it also helped the community.

You do realize there are legal repeaters on GMRs channels in Los Angeles right. I thought they were illegal until the city let me know the hard way XD

These radios will be very important in a shtf scenario and at that moment the enforcing governments will most likely be defunct. Thus many are illegally owned and operated

Hurricane comes through and wipes out communications for a large area A good Samaritan throws up a GMRS simplex message forwarding system to significantly improve the range of all his neighbors simplex gmrs handhelds. They can communicate with each other, find out which gas stations has gas, which grocery stores have food, connect with any hams monitoring the GMRS channel to report any emergencies to the EOC or get HF messaging services to family members in other states.... yea that's not useful at all. The radio spectrum is for everyone, not just the elitists.

Set up CTCSS tones for the repeater radio, then what’s the big deal? Then if anyone tries to talk on GMRS 5, you can just have the TX CTCSS tones set on your radio. If anyone is out there on ch5 your radio will hear them, but they won’t be interfering with the repeater or be in the repeater. If you leave your RX tones of your radio open, you will hear them, then this can be figured out from there.
The problem you’re describing, actually makes 15-22 tough to talk on because around me, most of those are repeaters transmit channels as well.
I’ll have to set tones just to have high power simplex convos, on those channels.

When i was 10 i took a very expensive ham radio that was given to my brother and got on it saying a lot of profanity and using his call sign and 3 old dudes showed up to my house to take the radio back from my brother. It's been 15 years and he still hasn't forgiven me... 😂

I still don’t understand how it makes the channel unusable. Is the repeater transmitting at a power level above the legal limit? Or is it bleeding into other frequencies different from the original transmission?
