  • After a time away from RUclips I'm back at it (pun intended). let's unbox and review a very well loved 1962 vintage Gibson Mastertone banjo from an infamous decade that took a turn for the worse. Is this banjo before or after the turn? We're going to take a look and see, decide what it needs and take a listen if possible. How would you decide what to fix on this banjo? If you stay to the end I'll be summarize the list and recommend some repairs for the owner.

had one just like it. When I bought it in around 1973 used i was told it was around a late 50s model. It has only one coordinator rod. However I was yound and dumb and wanted a hearts and flowers in lay and fiddle head neck and made into an archtop. Not knowing any different I let the guy that did the work keep the old tone ring and neck. Regret it now of course. I have had the banjo for over 40 years and it still plays and sounds good. Of course now I wish I had the original banjo as it was when I bought it. NIce looking banjo and I know you will make it look and sound good.

I had a friend with a bowtie 250 archtop with the original Scruggs tuners. Would be nice if they were still there. 😢

I would fix the frets, clean it up, put d-tuners in the holes in the peghead, refinish where needed. It’s a beautiful banjo. You fix I buy 😊

That is a possibility. I have what I assume to be the "original" D-tuner cam types, which are ODE brand. Pretty nice actually. Just probably a little crowded in the back. Not sure what Mike would decide. I'm pretty sure he's open to offers, ideas and suggestions.

My early 1970's Gibson R250 banjo has the wooden piece that are the tube and plate support is coming loose. What type of glue do you recommend for gluing back to the wooden rim? Thanks!!

Did you loosen the set screws on the Keith tuners to tune?

Oh yes. That was the first thing I did. They are just super stiff, but can be refurbished by Beacon Banjo co. the makers. Pretty common when old.

    I would not refinish it
