  • Since 2020, journalist and author Dolly Alderton has been offering advice to the general public through her Dear Dolly advice column in the Sunday Times. Earlier this year, she received a question from a reader that read…
'I am in my late thirties and feel like I look ancient. Lots of my close friends have started to have subtle Botox and I can’t help but feel bitter when I compare myself to them. I don’t want to have it, even if I could afford it. Other than the cost, I worry how sustainable it would be long term. Also I don’t want to set the example for my daughters. What do you think?'
Dolly joined us at Wilderness Festival 2023 in the beautiful Oxfordshire countryside to read it.

Does not matter to me what a woman looks like on the outside. If she's got a good heart that's all I care about. Black, white yellow - whatever.68 years on this gorgeous planet ( yes, she's female ) have taught me this.

That was one of THE best responses to a question I've heard in a very long time. It's made me, a 63yr old who is too afraid to even contemplate any kind of relationship or photograph of myself because of what I used to look like, a lot better about myself. 👏👏👏👏

@loraineriddell7157 I'm happy to see that Dolly's arrows of advice and 'wisdom' hit their right target in You. Time to get on with it now I guess! /I wanted to share the words of a statuesque, head-turning friend when she became sixty. She discussed strongly missing the 'power-generation' of her youthful looks and vampy dress with a counsellor. What she took away was this - it may be more challenging, and feel harder, for women who've attracted attention and admirers for their lifelong good looks to age, than for a woman who did not experience as much of that appreciation. I think those words helped my friend better celebrate how great she looked in earlier decades - and what a fun time she'd had! And to accept and find reasons to celebrate the transition to no longer being such a 'hot commodity' socially, with men and women.

My daughter is 23, and thinks she's grown 😂😂 Little does she know how much a child she still is, and I hope she keeps an image of herself now in her mind as she ages, so she may never forget she is smart, funny, and always kind hearted. These are the things that will make her proud when she is as old as I, the very things I'm so proud of about her now.

Enjoyed this very much. The DM’s will trickle away and one becomes invisible -- but in a rather glorious freeing way. Spent a lot of youth batting away unwanted comments and advances - not because of great beauty but simply being one clear gender. I don’t get the pleasant little favors I once got but those came at a cost greater than they were ever worth. It’s remarkable to now be so free. Didn’t realize how ready I had to be to duck and weave and run - until I no longer have to.

More people should be bought up and encouraged to be comfortable in their own skin…be more accepting of their looks and others…because beauty is only skin deep…see people for who they are not what they look like….it’s what’s inside that matters most..not the exterior…that’s were love, intelligence, compassion, acceptance of oneself and feelings really come from….it’s superficial people who put others down because of their looks so they can feel good about themselves.

As a 63 years AGED Guy, who has the PRIVILEGE to get older, i couldnt agree more to every statement she gave.
Getting older is not getting weaker or less sexy. We are aging KING SIZE!
Unless, of course, time takes its toll, and sooner or later your Body refuses to act like its 25!

@@SenorPenor1337 That would be equally awesome! Anyone who feels great with themselves is allowed to express it, so why do you think it would be any different if it was a man who thought he looked great? And why is that *always* the first thing men say when someone celebrates a woman? "What if it was a man who did/said this/that" is a pathetic thing to say. Come up with something new to add to the discussion or don't say anything at all. You are just fishing for comments to make you say "AHA! SEE!" and continue on with your outrage.

@daviddonnelly Watching this from outside the UK. Don't know of Dolly and her ST column. Found this truly awful for some reason. To be clapped and cheered for being so profoundly self absorbed. Arguing against herself in her letter. "I'm so hot" but "it's more important by far to be funny, wise, a good friend, and cracking at parties". Perhaps some are cheered and encouraged by Dolly's ebullient craziness. Or maybe it's an English thing that I missed in translation?

I think it's a huge mistake to conflate good, fine, perfect, wonderful, satisfactory, fun, pleasant, etc., with "hot." It's a mistake when you're in your 20s, and it's an even bigger mistake when you're in your 50s and you are, in fact, no longer "hot," no matter how much fun you're having. We have to stop thinking "sexy" and "hot" are the be-all, end-all of life; they're not. Strive for goodness, for virtue, and have fun, and be done with this sex-centric nonsense.

    • @sarahstyles6859

I think it is a mistake to equate them, but let's be real, there are some hot old people out there. There is nothing wrong with feeling attractive or hit at any age. And if someone does enjoy feeling hot then that doesn't mean they haven't also worked in a good character.

@@sarahstyles6859 One can't think about much of anything important without generalizing. And, sure, the matter of "feeling hot" is a big topic (humans are big, as in complicated). But it's a fact that "hotness" (i.e., sexiness) is not a virtue, and placing some prime importance on it is a wrong move, as is using your "hotness" in ways that cause others to think or do wrong things. The gift of sex is for marriage and the procreation of children; it isn't a toy, a matter of recreation, or the end goal of life that so many people treat it as.

@@nunyabizness3777 I'm a Christian so I understand exactly what you're saying. But there is another factor you're not considering. It honk some people keep it very personal and don't make it about what others think of them. So many women don't care what others think but they deserve to enjoy their mortal experience in their bodies. Some come from abuse who've been told they are ugly etc.... for them to enjoy sexy underwear is not about men but about breaking free of that brainwashing and oppression and simply enjoying the body they have. Some learn to live their bodies in other ways but I know women who needed that for themselves and their own psyche. I don't begrudge them that.
