Dad fought with the U.S. Army 77th Division on Guam and Okinawa. He was wounded during both battles, more severely on Okinawa. He didn't talk about it much until he was in his later years and expressed some remorse about all the men he'd killed...but he said he did what he had to do to survive and get back home to my mom. Dad was 100% disabled as a result of his injuries from Okinawa. Fortunately, the VA took very good care of him for many years. Dad is gone now as are so many of his comrades and he will always be my hero.

For reasons that defy explanation, it took almost seven years for this beautifully respectful video to show up in my RUclips recommended list. And once I noticed, all I could do as I watched was to wonder how many more of these men we've lost since it was filmed. Godspeed gentlemen.

I was wondering the same. My father dropped out of high school in 1944, at the old age of 17. He tried joining the Marine Corps with a buddy of his, who happened to be 18. Marines took Dad's friend, & told Dad to come back when he was 18. Dad was afraid that the war would be over before then, so he enlisted in the Navy instead. His friend, PFC Charles (Chuck) Hlavaty, was killed on the opening day of the Iwo Jima invasion, February 19, 1945. He was with the 5th Marine Division, whose assigned invasion beaches were the ones closest to Mount Suribachi. Chuck's family had emigrated to the US after Hitler occupied Czechoslovakia, to be free. He was his parent's only child. May they all rest in peace.

My Uncle, Army Signalman Robert J. Mahood, was a third wave Iwo Jima survivor. I will never forget reading his letters to my grandmother written after the battle of Iwo Jima. I also remember him showing me a captured enemy rifle he brought back when I was a small boy. That was the only time he spoke of his experience. But his letters conveyed part of the horror he experienced. I was glad I was able to serve my country---but he was truly part of the greatest generation. My dad, his younger brother, was to be a Japanese interpreter but the war ended and he remained state side. Thank you to the producers of this film for giving me such insight into my uncle's experience. God Bless America.

My uncle was a corpsman on Iwo Jima, What he saw, and what happened to him, totally changed him afterward. He was never the same.
As a child I had asked my mother why he had a " problem" and her reply was: "He just saw too many men he couldn't help, like the ones holding their guts in their hands, and he knew he couldn't help them." Anyone in that situation would have problems and he just couldn't cope.
Bless him. He passed many years ago.
My mother gave me the cowrie shells he had brought back to her from there. I have them labeled and in a safe place. Little pieces of history. Meaningless to anyone else, but the only pieces of my mothers family history I have.

@David Wang WHY DON'T YOU GO BACK TO HELL WHERE YOU CAME FROM AND TELL THE DEVIL ALL ABOUT IT- SEE IF HE CARES ABOUT WHAT YOU THINK!!!
I'VE SAID ALL THIS BEFORE NUMEROUS TIMES: IN THE LAST ELECTION, IT WAS A CHOICE BETWEEN EITHER DONALD TRUMP OR THAT EVIL BITCH HILIARY- AND I WAS GODDAMED IF I WAS GONNA VOTE TO SEND THE CLINTONS BACK TO THE WHITE HOUSE!!! DONALD TRUMP WAS AN UNKNOWN QUANTITY, BUT I KNEW DOGGONE WELL WHAT THE CLINTONS WERE GONNA DO IF THEY EVER GOT ANOTHER CHANCE- AND TO HELL WITH THAT NOISE!!!
DONALD TRUMP HAS AN AWFUL LONG WAY TO STOOP BEFORE HE'D BE EVEN HALF AS BAD AS BILL CLINTON WAS- AND OBAMA WAS SURE AS HELL NO SAINT EITHER- AND YET THEY EACH SERVED TWO TERMS AS PRESIDENT IN SPITE OF EVERY ROTTEN THING THEY DID!!!
ANSWER ME THIS: HOW MANY PEOPLE ARE DEAD BECAUSE OF DONALD TRUMP COMPARED WITH THE BODY COUNT THAT THE CLINTONS RACKED UP?! AND WHAT ABOUT THOSE 4 DEAD AMERICANS AT BENGHAZI?!! WEASEL OUT OF THAT- SMART ASS!!!
YOU LOUSY COMMIELIBS ARE DISGUSTING- AND AS FAR AS I'M CONCERNED, REGARDING "CANCER OF MORALITY"- YOU CREEPS HAVE A VIRTUAL MONOPOLY ON IT!!!

As bad as Vietnam was I can see no event as bad as this. Thank-you all for your bravery. As a white guy I really was impressed about the segment on the african-american soldier. So many of these men went through so much at such a young age. We who have freedom because of these men, so many young people don't seem to care about what they did for us, or even know about the sacrifices they men gave.

I don't know what else to write, it would be too feeble in comparison to what my people achieved on Iwo Jima.

I pray that God does bless America. I'm a Canadian and am proud to be the northern neighbour of such a generous, caring, individual freedom loving, and just nation. May the world be inspired by all America is. America's veterans, as with all her allies, are the stewards of that freedom. It's to us that the torch be carried high and we cannot fail them.

@@spokenbratze2361 Research a little bit about the Empire of Japan and say that again. That was a society, which had no qualms about faking a surrender to ambush marines or torturing men more horrifically than the Nazis did in Europe, nor did they have any moral objection to attacking the west coast with bubonic plague. We all know how they handled declarations of war. To them declaring a little bit late to facilitate a horrific slaughter was just fine. Knowing what I know of the history of the Japanese Empire, I'll never regret dropping the bomb to avoid a million U.S. casualties (and probably four times that of Japanese).

I respect and honour all men who fought for their countries in any war. Jim telling of how only 3 of his squad out of 14 were left alive reminded me of a conversation I had with an old veteran of WWII, in 1992 while I was living in Germany. He told me that he had been in the German Paratroopers during the war. He said that his Company of 150 men had been sent to the Russian Front. Three days after he arrived there, only 10 of his Company were left alive. This man had tears in his eyes as he told me this. He said how much he feared the Neo Nazi groups of today screaming to “do it all again”. He said they just have no idea what they are wishing for.. This wonderful man wept openly not only for his comrades, but for all people who had to endure such horror. He said he was taken prisoner by my countrymen (Canadians) at Monte Casino in Italy towards the end of that monsterous battle. It was surreal to listen to his tale, but I felt honoured that he chose me to talk to. A gracious and humble human being. PS. My Dad was a Bomb Aimer with the Royal Canadian Air Force in England 1944 and flew 35 sorties from Apri 18th to August 30th 1944. I salute all of them.

Heroes all, these guys truly are, and will always be. Just can't say as much for those who sent them there.

@David Wang REALLY? YOU SERVED IN VIETNAM?! IN CASE YOU DON'T KNOW IT- THE DEMOCRATS IN CONGRESS PISSED AWAY EVERYTHING THAT U.S. FORCES- AND A WHOLE HECK OF A LOT OF SOUTH VIETNAMESE- FOUGHT, BLED, AND DIED FOR DURING THAT LOUSY WAR, WHEN CONGRESS CUT OFF SUPPORT TO SOUTH VIETNAM FROM 1973-1975 WHEN SOUTH VIETNAM WAS FIGHTING FOR ITS EXISTENCE!!!
AND THE DEMOCRATS IN CONGRESS ALMOST BLEW IT IN NICARAGUA- WHEN THEY DIDN'T WANT TO GIVE THE CONTRAS A DAM PENNY, WHILE THE CONTRAS WERE TRYING TO TAKE BACK NICARAGUA FROM THE COMMUNIST SANDINISTAS!!! I GUESS IT WASN'T BAD ENOUGH THAT THE RUSSIANS WERE IN CUBA- THE DEMOCRATS DIDN'T SEEM TO CARE IF THE RUSSIANS GOT INTO NICARAGUA AS WELL!!!
SOME OF US HAVE LONG MEMORIES...AND I'LL BE GODDAMED IF I'M EVER GONNA VOTE FOR ANY DEMOCRAT(S)!!!

At my dad's funeral there were just three WW2 vets including an uncle who was on Iwo Jima while my dad was offshore on a DE that was later hit by a Kamikaze. They both said Iwo was the worse battle of the entire war. It had suddenly occurred to me that of the 30 or so WW2 in the Legion post, these three were the last of their generation. I've always thought that there is a special place between heaven and hell reserved just for soldiers where the weather is always good, there is plenty of food, hot water and toilet paper and the march is always an easy one. I hope when I die that there is a god who will let me stay with my dad and six uncles who served in WW2 and Korea. Otherwise I'm gonna be pissed!
