- This is a chronicle of my backcountry pack hunt in the Alpine for Sitka Blacktail deer. The hunt took place in August of 2016, with guide Eli Lucas (Alaska Coastal Hunting; www.emydonhunting.com). He and I climbed into the mountains with about week's supply of food and other essentials, in search of early season bucks.
It was a great adventure, and a challenge for me. The video is about the fullness of the experience, and includes footage of the ascent and our camp life, along with the pursuit of game. I think it tells the story of this particular type of hunt reasonably well. So, if you are hunter who - like me - includes hours of online video viewing as part of the "hunt research process", you might actually find it useful.
If you are watching this and you are not a hunter, then its probably you, Mom. Hi Mom!
For those who care about such things . . . the whole video was filmed using an Olympus TG-4 compact waterproof still and video camera - sometimes held in my hand, sometimes strapped to my pack, sometimes on a tiny flexible tripod - and occasionally overturned in the brush.
Great video. Alpine blacktail hunting is one of the most rewarding hunts there is. It's brutal to the body but warming to the soul. The whole time you are doing it, you're like why am I putting myself through this? Everything is fighting you. The Devils club, alders, weather, and the terrain. And when you get down to saltwater you are already planning next years hunt back up where you came. Eli is a great guy. You captured the essence of this special hunt very well. Those who haven't done it have no idea what really goes into a salt water to alpine hunt.
You nailed it! Really rewarding hunt.
This is so cool, as this past summer we spent a week with Eli in pursuit of mountain goat, sitka blacktail, and wolf. I tagged out on all three and my father harvested a blacktail buck. It was a fantastic hunt, and Eli was a great guide. What's crazy, we stayed in the same spot as you did on that alpine mountain. What a climb! I shot my deer on that far ridge you see in a lot of clips. I have a video of my trip's pictures posted on my channel, as well as simple footage of the shot on my blacktail. Great buck Curt!
man I love self filmed hunts, and this vid is great. congrats man.
With Curt, Eli and Laverne and Shirley! Just kidding, I actually enjoyed everything about your video, including the music you selected. That is a fantastic Sitka buck! And the stats on your hike (3500 vertical feet in 1.5 miles) are impressive. That's a STEEP approach, but it looks to be worth it. Great country, I hope to book a trip like this before I get too old to climb the hill.
Thanks for the compliment on the video. If you really are interested in this type of hunt, you might consider contacting Eli (guide in video/contact info in credits). I've hunted with him three times, and every time has been really rewarding and also successful. He is a very capable guide, and can offer a lot of hunt options, depending on your interest, fitness level, etc. BTW, I'm with you, I am getting in the climbs before I "age out".
fantastic buck.
Forgot to mention......hell of a good buck!
Thats a sweet buck. I would really like to see what the antlers looks like now. I have never seen antlers that fresh. Anyway i can get a pic of the mount? I just had a crazy season myself hunting for western oregon blacktail. Picked up a 3x3 with a eyegaurd on nov 2. I cut it close was scary!. congratulations On that awesome buck!
HornHustler Congrats on your buck! The antlers dried to a matte brownish color, since they never got rubbed beyond the initial removal of the velvet, I'm guessing. I gave a pic of the buck at time of harvest to the taxidermist and he said he can clean and can stain the rack to look as it did when he was taken. I'll post a pic to these comments when I get it back.
I'm 12 and I've shot my diet big Sitka black tail it was a 3 by 4 and I know Eli as a friend I see him and his kids every year I like him
