James Brown is known as the "Godfather of Soul" & "Mr. Dynamite". He pioneered funk style music. His career spanned at least 5 decades of music. He was known for his dynamic energetic live performances. Some of his hits were "Try Me", "Papa's Got A Brand New Bag", "I Got You (I Feel Good)", "It's A Man's Man's Man's World", "The Payback", "Please, Please, Please" etc.
My parents have only 3 children, 👧 👦and 11 years later 👦 youngest a toddler when it came out. LOVED this song and had the cutest little stomp dance with one foot when listening. To this day I don't know how he knew what side to play. Sometimes he'd run in suddenly and change whatever 45s we were playing to play the "Goodfoot." A few 45s were scratched you Know. If he woke up from a nap he'd come in and search through all the 45s to find and play his foot stomping groove. For the longest time whatever record we wanted to play took a back seat for him. He stayed on the"Good foot"
It was my great pleasure to see James Brown in 1993. It was outdoors, in June, in Alabama. It was 8pm and still in the 80s with high humidity. Godfather came out in a suit and killed for three hours in that heat. The man had turned 60 a month before and still - STILL - jumped off the piano lid and landed in a half-split like it was 1963.
Reminds me of a legendary New Orleans street car driver who used to have a spread of holy cards of different saints on the dash, with a picture ofJames Brown right in the middle. He loved to tell people boarding the car to "step on the good foot."
This song reminds me of my step-father (my Dad) who's been gone 13 years now. We used to make some adult beverages and left handed cigs, funk out, dance and have those long father- daughter talks. He was the best man I ever knew and he still influences me to this day. Good to see someone else "get on the good foot"!! 💜💜💜
THE Godfather of Soul. Always a vibe, always a good time. Top 5 artist of all time if not higher. Y’all have to do “get up offa that thing”, to me it’s his most underrated song.
You sure you want to listen to this, lol?? Here we go. Get on it!! Oh my! Now! Now there's dancin', lol. Go go. Great reaction and good advice! No one like James. "Please Please Please" is still my fav video with live . Not really a 'fast' funky song. Maybe you've seen that one already.. Thanks. Great reaction.
Ohhhh DAMN! This is MY JAM!! Soul Brother #1, The Godfather of Soul, Mr. Dynamite!! This is EXACTLY the kind of tunes I like to play when I’m driving.. a funky jamming groove that makes you wanna move! As musician, I always opt for stuff with a strong backing band, and JB was always known for demanding the very best from his band.. even throwing out an open hand if they missed a beat signaling he was gonna fine em $5 for every time he had to throw the hand. 😂 James has always been one of my favorite artists and this is one of the “deep cuts” from James that I really love. Most people know him by his big “hits” like “I Got You”, “Cold Sweat”, or “Papas Got a Brand New Bag”, but to me James really shines and cuts loose on tracks like this one which you don’t usually hear on the radio or on film soundtracks. Similar hard hitting jams like this would include tunes like: “I Got Ants In My Pants”, “I Got The Feeling”, “I Can’t Stand Myself (When You Touch Me)”, “There It Is”, “Licking Stick”, “Hot Pants”, and the absolutely unstoppable “I Don’t Want Nobody To Get Me Nothing (Open Up The Door, I’ll Get It Myself)”. Y’all we mentioning dance, and James had the moves that inspired MJ, among many others. When performing Live, James would dance through his whole set, and one song that would really showcase his dancing style would always be “There Was A Time”, a song where he talks about growing up in Augusta, GA. As for slower, heartfelt jams like “It’s A Man’s World” that Asia was mentioning.. my all time favorite would have to be “Lost Someone” where James really cuts loose vocally, but it’d be wrong not to mention one of the highlights of his shows, one of his earliest hit songs “Please, Please, Please”.. where James would suddenly be so overcome with emotion that one of his guys (the late Danny Ray, RIP) would have to come bring him his cape and help him walk off his agony and make sure he didn’t pass out. 😮 The Time incorporated a somewhat similar scenario for their live shows where a guy would hold up a mirror for Morris Day to check himself. 😂
Asia & BJ, you'll love his "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag", "Get Up (I Feel Like Being A) Sex Machine", "I Got You (I Feel Good)" "Please, Please, Please" and many more!!!
Brings back memories of the days I went to the disco in the weekends in the early seventies. Great music. Hard to sit still with this music. 🎶🎶🎶❤️❤️❤️👍
I first heard this song as a college freshman in 1990. For over thirty years, every time anyone asks me what's going on, I say, "Ain't nothin' goin' on but the rent, a while lotta bills and my money's spent." If y'all want to see The Godfather Of Soul REALLY throwing down, dig "Cold Sweat" live in Zaire in 1974, "Rumble In The Jungle."
Check out Lickin Stick on the Cold Sweat album. Aerosmith does a version of Mother Popcorn on their live album Bootleg. Have a beautiful night and better tomorrow
Fred Wesley and The J.B's was James Brown's horn section up until the mid 70's when they went to Parliament Funkadelic where they became The Horny Horns.
Soul Brother no.1 in the 60's. Godfather of Soul in the 70's. You cannot and will not talk about great entertainers and hellafied dancers and not throw James Brown in the mix. Asia and D.J I 've seen many of your videos and I am really impressed how young people like yourselves groove and analyze songs made before you were born. To show my age this and other songs you guys break down came out when I was a teenager in the 70's. You guys like his studio recordings you would have been highly awestruck if you had ever seen him perform live.
I think another slow song by James brown “Try Me” and Bootsy Collins was James Brown’s Bass player for awhile, I think Bootsy was 21 years old when he first started playing Bass for James Brown, Bootsy’s brother was James Brown’s guitar player…….
Wow!! Y'all are just now getting on the good foot??!! For shame!! This song came out in 1972 and I'm STILL doing it!! This song came on in Target recently and me and my husband was jammin' in the aisle💃💃💃
You got no idea. When I was young laying in bed and had the radio playing, half asleep, and James came on? I literally jumped out of bed and danced . He was as cool as they get.
Love this funky James Brown song!!🎶How do you sit still?💃💃Thanks so much guys - it was fun watching your reaction - BJ's moves and Asia's comments always crack me up!!😊💞
Asia, BJ: The first songs I heard by James Brown were "Prisoner Of Love" and "These Foolish Things". It was 1964 and my cousin Frankie had given me his EP as he was a bit disappointed with it. The two songs mentioned are ballads which are sung in a straightforward manner except for the fade on "These Foolish Things" where James's vocal gets quite excited and he invites his paramour to
Please check out James Brown The Big Payback Zaire 1974. "In September 1974, James Brown headlined Zaire 74, a three day music festival in Kinshasa, Zaire, now the Democratic Republic of the Congo, held to simultaneously promote The Rumble in the Jungle, the historic boxing match between Muhammad Ali and George Foreman, and racial and cultural solidarity." Think you'll love it - and so will we!
ooh, the way the bassist is just playin the first note of each measure with a loud, "Boooiiinngg" -- So basic, but with J.B's music, timing was everything!!--( he'd fine your azz if you was late or off beat) Fun reaction, guys!!
I was wondering if James' music somehow led to rap since he sang in phrases that had meanings and feelings with a steady beat. The structure does seem to lend itself to music that would come later. Just my opinion.
That's what it's all about getting on the Good Foot You Can Get on the Good Foot that's a beautiful thing being on the same Accord there are good life with love and affection and compassion that's a wonderful thing that make one Accord
I was a 11 yr old girl when this came out. Believe me when i say, this song was smoking 🔥 back in the day! If you went to a bday party in someone's house, and if they didn't have this record, you were a LOSER! 😅
If you ain't on the good foot I don't know WHERE you are! SIDE NOTE: The box set this came from--Star Time--is the greatest box set by anyone, anywhere, ever. Just sayin.'
You can't go wrong with the funk and groove of James Brown. 🔥💯🔥
Absolutely 100%
Every James Brown track is stunning in not only groove but musical perfection. James did not tolerate mistakes!

James most famous slow song is probably "Please, please, please" The live performance of it is legendary and must be seen, more than once.
The hardest working man in show business never disappoints, he had a vibe very few could match!
The hardest working man in show business 🤘🤘

Fred Wesley and The J.B's was James Brown's horn section up until the mid 70's when they went to Parliament Funkadelic where they became The Horny Horns.
It would have been nice if you had reacted to a live performance of this song because it's fun to watch his dancing.

This box set spent a lot of time in my CD player, and my car stereo when it came out in the early 90s. "Try Me" is another great love ballad.
I learned this sht the hard way, like James did.
I work to this everyday with my grandchildren! When I grew JB was the lick!!!!!!
