Judging by how much The History Guy had to condense to fit within ten minutes, a feature length film would be hard pressed to cover it. When people are amazing, they are *really* amazing.
Sadly there is a lot of history that is never taught in most if all not of the schools in the United States of America ! Again sadly may never be taught in our schools !
Kinda makes you wonder what you really know. Unfortunately when the realization of how little we truly know is recognized, learning how retarded we are is humbling.
@Dessy Duke Lecker No it made me sick and disgusted to see RACIST animals that would enslave a man like this great man and ridiculously claim that he, Robert Smalls, is inferior to them...in ANY way. Then try to distort it all by claiming "states" rights. YOU had no right to enslave anyone. And once you did you had no right to claim any decency, humanity or superiority. Drinking a mint julip was drinking slave sweat!!! And you can prance around all you want pretending you have honor. But that's a LIE. Because you never did. Further more, what goes around, comes are. Or...to put it another, too abstract, way for you probably: The arch of the moral universe is long. But...it bends toward JUSTICE!!! Viva EUGENE BULLARD. Viva JUSTICE.
@Dessy Duke Lecker Here we go with that distortion of "They" didn't think about slavery. Not to get too personal but I am a U.S.M.C vet. When I graduated from P.I. My mom came to the island to see it. There was a confed flag hanging in Buford at the time. Lots of people who-- WHITEs-- who fought for the south didn't own slaves. That is true. The problem with attempting to use that as "proof" that they were not racist, fall as flat and hard, and for the same reasons, as the Nazi in Germany who says it wasn't for Adolf it was for the "vatherland". Now these sorts of defenses only work if you are talking to someone who is miserably uninformed...which I am not. You didn't own a slave...but you knew you And thats why you fought for the south...that is what you were fighting for. And you can't deny that because of the History of the south...The lychings, Jim Crow, the kkk, ect. Thats what they fought for. And still fight for...hmmmmmm???
@Dessy Duke Lecker New York City dealt both more profitably and in greater volume in slaves than Atlanta. I know very well about the Racist history of this country. But my comments were addressed primarily to the south, because that was the direction of the conversation. You not only distort, sir, but you have the unfortunate inclination to "ASSuME!!!
It’s shameful that I’m in my 30s and just learning of this man. However, as I homeschool, my children will know of this amazing human being ❤️ Thank you Robert Smalls. Rest In Peace. Thank you History Guy!
Oh History Guy! You approach your story with such passion that we are hooked with your newest video and then we stay on your Channel for more and more. That SO many people haven't yet discovered this 'new way' of watching TV. We are thoroughly engrossed during your presentations. In viewing your 'History, Revisited' moments we find that we want to view it again....and many times, again, just to take it all in! Thank you for this informative (terribly inadequate word) collection of the life of Robert Smalls. We agree with you......he is a Super Hero! A remarkable man!
I learned of ROBERT SMALLS over 35 years ago on my own because I learned nothing about him in high school. Thank you for exposing what American History books neglect!
I agree Mr History Guy, what a fantastic story, When I grew up I wasn’t even aware of these great men until much later in high school. Thanks for this most informative piece, to me you are “ The Best “.
Stormy Lantz ......Right there’s no day nor monument barely a mention, yet there are days, books, movies, parades, flags, plaques, metals, songs you name it for staunch slave owning presidents/politicians/lawyers etc.
Stormy Lantz ...Truly. It is a very American Story. From PhillyPA, with respect....and love and health to all of our good citizens. We are a fortunate Land of Many and Plenty. No excuses here, in this day, except for our own, individual fallings. Thank you History Guy. Good for Mr Smalls having the balls and the mind to get his point across at the time. POLITICS is still a br....not brutal, but shameful on occasion. And yes, very, very dirty. Hmmmm. Slainte, HG🤗
I had heard of Robert Smalls' capture of the CSS Planter, but nothing else about him. Once again, The History Guy provided more of the story, and much context in less than 10 minutes than I had ever before learned about this important American.
What a true American hero! Hollywood needs to make a movie about this man's life instead of constantly recycling tired old scripts! They wouldn't even have to embellish the story. Its amazing all by itself. 😊
As a historian too I am quite familiar with the story of Smalls, but I don't think I could tell it as beautifully as you! Along the same line as Smalls you should look into the life of Charles S. Sauvinet of New Orleans (born in 1928 to a white aristocrat and his Haitian wife). During the Civil War he served with the Colored troops (I think the 2ns LA). Check him out from the Civil war up to his death. Just some quick highlights in case you are unfamiliar with his story: He served on both sides of the war, acting as, among other things, a translator to Admiral D Farragut. Sauvinet was not only literate, but spoke many languages. After the war he survived the shipwreck of the SS Republic which during the war Farragut had used briefly (then under the name of USS Tennessee). Once home from the shipwreck he was elected as New Orleans's Civil Sheriff being the first black man to hold that position. While still Sheriff he sued for being refused service in a bar in a case that ended up in both the LA & US Supreme Courts. He owned several pieces of property in New Orleans. He worked at the Freedman's Bank and rose thru their ranks. He testified before Congress after the New Orleans riots . . . so much more! He and Smalls are my two favorite "little known heroes" of greater Civil War era. Keep the videos coming, they are GREAT!!
Crazy how much time I spent on so many others and did not ever get this for a foot note.. I feel like this channel is doing justice to many 10 minutes at a time.. can't wait to see this movie..
Knowledge is POWER! IGNORANCE IS CRIPPLING!!! Learning this story entices me to want to know more. Thanks for sharing the life POWERFUL, BRAVE & GREAT MAN!!
How can a man that accomplished so much be so unknown to all Americans? His life story is one that truly needs to be better publicized. Thanks so much for the very informative history lesson.
This is a very important part of history that is not taught in the current curriculum in the American school system. This is a real Superhero. Thank you very much Sir. Respectfully Russell Pernell Beverly
That was inspirational... Thank you... that started off my day being more grateful for everything I have & even for my job. I complain about the working conditions but no one beats me! Keep up the good work!
Excellent presentation. Smalls is the subject of the book "Be Free or Die" by Cate Lineberry. Haven't read it but I will. Cate Lineberry also wrote "The Secret Rescue", about American nurses and medics who were off course and crash landed in Albania in November 1943. At the time, the Germans and the two groups of Albanian partisans were fighting each other. Another bit of history worth remembering.
Excellent telling of Robert Smalls life! The story of Robert Smalls use to be included in our SC history classes, I'm not really sure if they even have a SC history course anymore though. Also Beaufort SC is pronounced like Bew-fert, a bit different I know. Thanks so much for telling a great part of Palmetto State history.
"Captain Smalls" (Maj. General Robert Smalls) is beyond doubt a true hero & perhaps the greatest South Carolinian ever. This is another enthralling episode from Lance at The History Guy. I find only one exception with the narrative given; that is the use of the word "steal/stole" in reference to Captain Smalls & the ship Planter. Captain Smalls didn't "steal" the Planter; he commandeered it as "spoils of war" from traitors engaging in rebellion against the People of the United States🤔
This is a truly superlative channel. I look forward to each new episode. Thank you for introducing us to another person who deserves recognition as a true hero.
History Guy, once again great stuff. However, I humbly offer a suggestion to further enhance your fascinating narrative. Specifically, on or about time intervals 2:57, 3:49 and 7:48 of the video, the term "commandeer" is not only more grammatically appropriate versus "took" or "steal", but the usage of that word better aligns with the heroic context of this compelling piece of Civil War history you've ably presented.
Another great piece of historic history they don't teach you in school. In my opinion, every history class in high schools should run your video clips in classrooms so it's students can learn more about history. You make history more interesting by the way you tell the stories. I've learned quite a bit more about history watching your video clips than I ever did way back in high school and I'm 54 yrs. old. Please keep up the excellent work for are children's children to learn. Also I was wondering if you could do a video clip about the 1910 Wellington WA. disaster at Stevens Pass WA. where an avalanche came down the mountain in the middle of the night and the took the lives of 101 passengers while they slept. The avalanche swept two stranded Great Northern Railway trains down the mountain. It is history that deserves to be remembered. I live 8 miles away from where the disaster happened. It's our traitorous politicians that besmirch our great and grand country. John F is not saying your countries suck Donky Kong or that all of God's children aren't equal; if I may proverbially put words into his mouth, I believe he said the idea of self government, a government of the people, by the people and for the people, is the most noble and grand government and or country that could possibly exist. Robert Smalls resided in Peeskill, NY for a time. Another African-American Peeksill resident you might consider doing a piece about: US Revolutionary War hero "Rifle" Jack Peterson.
