But if you read all the lyrics, there’s a shift in dynamic there. She actually got cheated on and she’s feeling like an old cardigan because of HIM, because of the lack of attention he’s giving her… because of the mistreatments… she felt like a useless cardigan sitting under someone’s bed then he once in a while wears her to comfort her telling her lies like she is her favourite (fake comfort, of course).

It's about the story of Betty and James. James cheated Betty with the August girl. August song is the POV/perspective of the other girl because she was just a summer thing to James. There's a lyrics on August song : "but u were never mine".
After listening to August song, then listen to Betty song. Betty song is the Perspective/POV of James. He turned back to Betty and there's a lyrics there:

"slept with her (August) but I dreamed of you all summer long".

Actually, Betty and James were endgame (watch willow mv). By "peter losing Wendy", she indicated how James put in effort to get her back (which he did). What she meant by "I knew everything" is indicating the unfairness of the situation. Bcuz James was immature as heck which u can tell when u read the lyrics of betty, and Betty was not which is why she had to go thru more. She had to be the one to understand his mistake. This is from a future perspective, and she's recalling the whole story step by step, so if u listen to it by order, the bridge is the climax of the story when he lost her. But the very last line is "You put me on and said I was your favorite" and it shows her in a cardigan indicating that at the end, James was her safe place even tho he hurt her and that's the most heart breaking part bcuz the whole story is about how ppl make mistakes (james), and how ppl who understand more (betty) have to look past that sometimes in order to save something (their relationship) even tho it rips them apart. P.S they got together in the future meaning they both probably matured and then came together again.
Taylor should write a book about thisss 😭
Never been a Taylor fan, but as I get older (I’m 25 now) my taste in music has started to shift to more chill songs. I still shake down to a good beat but chiller songs just get me more often nowadays. Great job on this song.

Is a lyric tons of people can really relate to. The lyric hit's me a lot, because growing up my family always doubted me, and never believed I could truly have a valid opinion because I was just a little girl..they thought that my age reflected how much knowledge I truly knew about a certain subject. In my opinion, age doesn't reflect what you do know, and what you don't know. I have a beautiful daughter now, and her opinions will always be valid to me, and I will never assume that she may know little to nothing on a certain subject just because of her age. Will never treat her the way my family treated me. She is my whole world and I want her to live a happy life, where she's accepted, supported, and treated properly.

Sometimes you know things better than others. What it's like to lose a loved one. What it's like to be in love. What it's like to be brokenhearted. What it's like to have a friend. What it's like to be stressed about unimportant things. What it's like to be a kid. The list goes on. But to sum it all up comes from a line in a book I read: "Youth cannot know how age thinks and feels. But old men are guilty if the forget what it was to be young..." After all, young people don't know everything, but they know far from nothing.
