Why are "Life Hack" videos so stupid? (Simply Nailogical & Ben reflect)

  • Somewhere in the stupid banality of testing Banana Life Hacks, Ben and I reflect on the culture of the Life Hack genre and its informational emptiness, question why people click, and go on a tangent in discussing the frustration felt among audiences when RUclipsrs repeatedly remind everyone that they work the hardest. What do you think? montage comment down below!

    This is why I love Cristine, she actually acknowledges that being a RUclipsr is way easier than what most people have to go through and she doesn’t act like she’s better than everyone else just cause she has 5 million subscribers. She also isn’t like many celebrities that are all like “Follow your dreams and you will make it!” Because the reality it that most people don’t make it when they just throw everything away to be a famous singer, actor or whatever else and it’s nice to see someone finally going against the norm of encouraging people to give everything up to do something that’s not very secure.

      There are millions of people out there who work just as hard as you tubers do, so no, they don't really work "harder" than regular people. What people don't realize is that when you tubers get really big to the point that they're celebrities, they're not doing everything themselves anymore. Even if they film and edit everything on their own, they have sponsors and income, which allows them to have access to better tools. They can afford lawyers and people to help them out etc.

    Thank you so much for this video! I I find it really frustrating to see big youtubers, especially vloggers, whine about how hard their life is. I am a full time student with two jobs I hate but need, just to earn enough money to be able to afford food. You vlog your life and can afford going on a vacation in a 5 star hotel four times a year and buy anything you want. Which is great! An important note on the 'youtubers work' discussion: It's also really condescending to poor people/people who live in poverty. Like, yes, you do work, but you do work *YOU ENJOY DOING* for way more than you ACTUALLY need to survive, whereas my father has worked himself to the point where on bad days he can BARELY MOVE without assistance and we have *NEVER* been financially sound. We have fought tooth and nail for every little scrap of anything, we've gone without soap before, without shampoo, without food, and that's with my dad keeping a steady job and being DILIGENT with his work.
    Content creators on RUclips work hard. but the work is not hard work. There is a huge difference between hard work and working hard. It's like comparing a 3 page event reflection essay to a 15 page research one (for sake of analogy the grade received is top marks on both): both people worked hard on the essay, but the 15 page one required more work and generally harder work (research essays are FAR harder than just writing 3 pages reflecting on an event).
    (what i said doesn't apply to 'uploads videos daily' RUclipsrs. That's a different ballpark)

    The bit about youtubers complaining about how hard they work is so relatable. I called out Melissa Alatorre for this on Instagram and she came at my THROAT in the DMs and told me that I has no idea how hard she works, that sometimes it takes her a whole day to film and edit, and that it requires more discipline than a normal 9-5 job. I was HOWLING with laughter, because I’m a TEACHER for crying out loud!!! Her argument was null and void at that point because she continued to post videos of her working out in the middle of the day and sitting on her couch watching movies in her pajamas lmao.

      Filming and editing is hard, no doubt. But the fact teaching actual discipline everyday and lashing your body out yo give wisdom to kids everyday... Is never a comparable WORKLOAD to something you'd already know what to do, like film and edit.
      So boi, you deserve praise.

    It bothers me to see people that in my eyes at least are unworthy of the success they are having. I love Cristine and Ben for pointing this out, because I agree, not enough people speak up against this and instead actually stimulate this what I think, is a bad development in society. These two are the most genuine couple on RUclips and I really appreciate that.

    THANK YOU for saying this, I thought I was the only one who was questioning their "hard work". I understand that there is a lot of work being done behind the scenes, but for the most part, RUclipsrs make their own schedule and get paid a lot for it. It's always funny seeing a RUclipsr complain about their "hectic" day, which consists of getting their nails done for 2 hours, eating at a fancy restaurant, and stopping at the mall for their 10th pair of Louboutins.

      I feel the same way. I get so tired of RUclipsrs complaining about how hard they work. I have been getting so irritated with Shane Dawson with this. He has put out an average of a little less than 2 videos a week this year with an average of about 40 or so minutes of content a week and all he does is talk about how hard he works. He should switch lives with me for a week and work in tech support 40 hours a week for a small fraction of the money he makes.

    • @stupidsmartperson
      @stupidsmartperson 6 лет назад +2

      I'm not sure Shane is a great example of this though...he legit writes his books, is developing a production company, has his podcast, and does his videos. Yes, that's not as "hard" as lots of normal people, but it seems like it's WAY more than most other youtubers do.

    • @iaspiretobeathesaurusyt9405
      @iaspiretobeathesaurusyt9405 6 лет назад

      Cruelty Free RV I agree, I think that Shane’s more recent videos have been higher effort than before, though his job is certainly more enjoyable than the average person’s. I dont think i hold that against him, because as well as talking about how hard he works, i dont think its really complaining; he constantly talks about how much better he feels now than how he used to.

Life doesn’t always go as planned when you want to be a big star/youtuber. And it truly is sad that youtubers that post lazy content saying that its really hard work, (although it is) don’t know what is like working for a company or a retail job cause those are actually hard jobs but don’t get paid as well. I completely agree with the work thing, but I also think that many youtubers forget that youtube isn't a "forever" thing. Look at how many things came before youtube. It's a now thing, but when something better (newer) hits the market people will slowly forget about youtube, and when that happens there is a huge chance that youtubers will lose their income from the switch. Their income already is being lowered due to advertisers pulling out and/or limiting advertisement on this platform. I think one of the main reasons why I enjoy your channel is because you still work your 9-5, you are still extremely grounded in the reality that 99% of us live daily.

  • @micheal2458
    @micheal2458 6 лет назад +142

    The second half of this video was so, so good to hear from youtubers. It's a feeling I've had that didn't feel fully validated until I got to hear someone else address it, and to have that be coming from you guys means a lot. Especially Cristine, a youtuber with an actual day job.
    The narrative successful youtubers have around work just doesn't fit with the fast food job that I got after I finished my Bachelor's that's put me on medical leave for two months due to a repetitive stress injury. It doesn't fit with all the smaller youtubers out there who are making their own films or music or what have you, who can't get past a couple thousand followers.
    I've seen this from a whole lot of beauty gurus--who, yes, I watch all the time because I love the content--where they're literally putting on makeup and filming for a few hours, take the makeup off, edit the video, and upload, and that's their job.
    The work to pay ratio is just completely skewed.

    I totally get what they’re saying about youtubers being out of touch with reality. I follow a lot of vloggers who post “a day in my life” videos and it’s so frustrating how they’re all like...the same? Like wake up in California and basically do nothing of worth all day - sit around and look cute at home, meet up with someone for lunch at a fancy restaurant, do other fun things through the day - take a second to go back home and edit for a couple hours...complain about how tired and burnt out they are because of it. Go out again and do more fun things. Well guys that was a day in my life! I’m working so hard for you but it’s worth it share like and subscribe!! And it’s just so annoying like we struggle so hard to survive and they’re out here just living their fantasy life without realizing the reality of most of their viewers. Sorry for the rant but this is definitely a rant-worthy topic.

      But like think what's gonna happen in a couple years when youtube goes out of style and they have nothing to fall back on? Seriously though it's kind of ridiculous that some vloggers/streamers go 'oh I'm so so so tired editing videos and playing video games to entertain you guys'. How can you even say that when people are actually working and not sitting at a desk in front a computer everyday?

    • @rebeccaelise3080
      @rebeccaelise3080 6 лет назад +4

      andrew Desi to be fair, a lot of people do work at a desk in front of a computer all day. In fact I’m pretty sure Cristine and Ben’s day jobs are precisely that.
      And I’m not convinced that the RUclips bubble will burst exactly. I mean people said that about both film and television when they started out. I think you tube will change and evolve in some way though - after all, it’s already so different than when it first started.

      I actually agree with you, but I also think that for some you tubers when they talk about being exhausted they’re also traveling and doing other hints behind the scenes, ya know?

    • @ceh0162
      @ceh0162 6 лет назад

      Jamie Lamie that's a very good point. Traveling, doing appearances, and having meetings behind the scenes are all definitely time consuming and mentally draining. I should clarify that it was comments made on snapchat, specifically about filming and posting videos, that led me to unfollow. I just can't imagine working half a day and then complaining to my boss that my job is hard, especially if I know my boss works longer hours and does a lot to support me. It was just a comment that was made too often for my liking, but then again I'm not in the target demographic so my opinion is irrelevant. Everybody is entitled to a good whine once in a while, but I think some people who owe their success and lifestyle to their RUclips subscribers should not, essentially, be telling the subscribers that making content for them is a burden. Again, that's just how it came across to me, and I totally agree that it is definitely a lot of hard work to maintain a successful channel and brand!

    I work as an interpreter and I went to interpret for parent-teacher conferences at a middle school. And this 6th grader blatantly told his parents that he wasn't going to try and school because he's just gonna be a RUclipsr. I just laughed (probs the most unprofessional thing to do) I couldn't believe it. Most of the successful content creators have been at it for years! And its only a select few that get that lucky! Pay attention in school kids and work hard for what you want, but don't expect things to fall into your lap.

Id love to hear you two having a podcast or something, if you had time fpr that, ofcourse. However, just wanted to say that I, and many other of your supporters love seeing you and Ben talk about serious stuff as much as we love seeing y'all doing random shit.

    I work at a school and it’s so hard to explain to kids that the youtubers they watch are the ones who make it. I don’t want to discourage them, but when they won’t do their work because their favorite youtuber dropped out of school it’s very frustrating. I can’t explain to a 9 year old that just because their favorite youtuber dropped out of school and made it doesn’t mean that they will. And that doesn’t mean that they shouldn’t do their work. They’re literally in third grade.

      pajanaparty that’s sad ... when I was young, I had as an exemple Bill Gates, Zuckerberg (sorry for the spelling), but we acknowledged that if we tried the same, we would finish working in a Macdonald for the rest of our life. I believe parents should really censure RUclips for their children. Look before, then permit it. So maybe they can explain, and discuss about it.

    • @jana_a_banana
      @jana_a_banana 6 лет назад +7

      Unfortunately, not all parents are willing to do that. Lots of parents are very hands-off in their approach to parenting. This kid in particular doesn't have very involved parents because of their jobs. We still have great role models for kids today (Malala, Ellen, etc.), but kids have access to lots more people that don't always put forward what's best for kids. I wish that RUclipsrs would be more proactive and promote finishing high school at the very least. Many people go straight into the workforce out of high school because that's what suits them best. To be real, there's nothing wrong with that. It's when they don't talk about how they were lucky to make it (like Cristine said) and don't mention how hard it is to make it. I just wish more RUclipsrs put that forward.

      Also, the youtubers telling their subscribers that they dropped out of school are irresponsible and clearly too immature for the platform. Even if you do end up a "successful youtuber" why not have a good education too? I find the most interesting youtubers I watch are the ones who take an interest in learning, they have more to say 🙂 xx

    Aye. Preach. I work as a technician and I work 12 hours. Woooooo! My 4am to 4pm. I regret nothing. However I see these youtubers making these videos and it is easier than what I am doing, and yes. Sometimes, I think of making a channel and make some videos for a month and then travel and blow money on stupid things. I'd like that. But at the same time. I know that's not possible. It is not possible. Let's be honest. But god. Thank you for appreciating the workers who also do hard work. Thank you guys.

    I think the reason that a lot of people don't call out youtubers who whine about how much work they do in the comments (relative to their own work) is an age thing. A lot of more vocal commenters and people involved in youtube communities haven't reached an age yet where they know how much work a 9-5 or a shift job is. And as a result when their favourite youtuber posts an emotional video about how tough their life is (an emotional video they also profit with), they don't question it. And are likely to downvote and insult the shit out of anyone who does dare to question it.

    I really love the real-life chats at the end of these videos--especially this one.
    When I was younger, I tossed around a lot of ideas and passions I would love as a career. But as I matured, I realized they either weren't viable careers or worth the heaps of tribulations that went hand-in-hand with them. Now, at 21, I've settled on radiography, a career that really excites me and incorporates a lot of my interests/passions. It doesn't require me to go into debt to pursue it, nor does it mean it will consume my life (well, save for the two rigorous years of schooling and the first year on the job)--which means I'm open to do other things that aren't sustainable careers for me. (Such as writing, creating music videos, doing costume makeup, etc.)
