    Everything is minimal but essential. The use of a blue barrel for food is an ingenious idea. I like this video very much. It is informative and neatly presented.

    This is an excellent video. Thorough and insightful. I really enjoyed watching it and the commentary that went along with it. Thanks for sharing it all with us. I know it took a while to put together as well.

      Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed it. You've made some excellent videos showing the gear that you've brought on your trips! My video certainly was not very concise, and I'm sure many viewers won't watch the whole thing, but I was hoping the extra detail will be helpful to some (particularly the people that requested this type of video).

      @@cjhoyle I think those who are planning a similar trip will appreciate all the detail that went into this video. It paints a complete picture, especially useful for those starting out.

    I really liked your explanation of the importance of wearing a life jacket - especially when traveling solo.

    Great video! Have enjoyed both canal series and this tops it off. Love the simplicity of the meal prep. And that you don't overpack. Its the experience that counts. We're looking forward to enjoying a canal trip in the next year or so and this has really helped. (and what about the tinted safety glasses - love it! )

      Thanks, I'm glad to hear! I try to bring as little as possible, but it actually ends up being quite a bit. I hope you enjoy your canal trip as much as I've enjoyed mine. haha yes, I forgot to mention those as well as my baseball cap (probably because I was hearing them at the time).

    Very interesting video Christopher! There was several things that you did or brought that I thought were really great ideas! I will have to remember some of these tips for when I go on a trip next. I often reuse disposable plastic bottles to bring extra water somewhere, but like you mentioned about only using them for the short time during your trip, I only use mine for a few times before putting them in the recycling. So I think it should be safe to reuse them a few times, but yeah they probably shouldn't be reused for a long period of time. That is a good idea to bring your old phone as a backup camera! I have actually thought about bringing my old phone with me for that same reason if I decide to start filming my day trips or multiday trips. Unfortunately my new phone, the S21, doesn't have a slot for a memory card, so I would have to try and save extra photos or video to some sort of data storage app or buy one of those external hard drives that you can save things to directly from your phone. When I have gone for day trips in canoes I usually bring a backpack and then put it in a drybag while in the canoe. I have found that that set up works great as it keeps my backpack completely dry and clean, sometimes there is dirt in the bottom of rental canoes, and I just roll open the bag when I need something. But when I stop somewhere and want to wear the backpack while walking around, I just pull it out of the drybag. Have you ever thought of getting a headlamp? I just bought one earlier this year and I find it's been so great for when I'm doing things in the dark and need both hands. The one I got was waterproof as well which is nice. And good for you for always wearing your lifejacket! I always wear mine while out in a canoe or other type of boat. Better to be safe than sorry!

      Forgot to mention, I also wear wrist braces sometimes to bed. I started having some issues with the right wrist a few years ago, I think from having my hand on a computer mouse too much.

      Thanks Josie, glad the video was interesting and useful. I hadn't realized that the S21 doesn't have expandable storage. I will keep that in mind when choosing my next phone. If you do make videos sharing your future trips, I'll be excited to watch them :). I was given a handlamp as a birthday gift about 15 years ago. I still have it, and it actually still works, although flashlight technology has come a long way since then. When I've taken it with me on trips I always find that I rarely put it on my head and just hold it in my hands most of the time, so the straps kind of just get in the way.

      @@cjhoyle Yeah I didn't know that it didn't have the expandable storage when I bought it. Although I probably still would have bought the phone because I really like the Samsung Galaxy S series phones. I found out after as well that you can get the phone in a 128GB, 256GB, or 512GB storage size. Mine is just 128GB. Another thing to keep in mind is the S21 doesn't have the jack for a mic or headphones. So if you want to use either of those with your phone you'd have to get wireless. That makes sense not using a headlamp if you found you never used it like a headlamp when you use it. I don't wear mine all the time when it's dark. Kind of just put it on when I need it. So far it did come in handy in particular on a camping trip I went on last summer. Worked well for setting up a tent in the dark, walking while carrying stuff, and using the outhouse that didn't have lights. I also sometimes bring it as a backup bike light because my bike light doesn't last very long on a charge.

      @@adventureswithjosie I've been really happy with my Galaxy S series phones too. I knew that with the S20 they got rid of the headphone jack (following the trend of other smartphone makers), so I've already been mentally preparing for that on my next phone lol. At least you can get an adapter which allows you to plug standard headphones into the USB-C port. Not having an SD card slot seems like much more of an inconvenience if I want to continue using my phone to record long trips in 4K.

    • @adventureswithjosie
      @adventureswithjosie 3 года назад

      @@cjhoyle Yes it would be a big inconvenience for the amount of video you take. Maybe by time you buy a new phone they will have some different options in the next couple Galaxy S phones. Or there is the option of buying one of those external hard drives that can connect directly to a phone, but on the downside another expense and another piece of gear to carry.

    Planning to retrace your route late August… but in a 17’ kayak. Knowing that you do kayak, could you give some thoughts as to how your approach might change? How many of the Trent locks had portage docks…. Loading my hatches, 3 feet below. The deck is not appealing. 😳. I was surprised you didn’t wear a shirt under your lifejacket for sunblock, or deerflies…. What insect repellent did you use on the water and at camp? I really enjoyed the follow up series you did coming out of Washago… looking at that current… I was going to go Port Severn to Trenton… but I’m thinking Trenton to Orillia is relatively flat water… The only thing is to prevailing northwest winds…. Would you go west or east or east or west on a paddle?
    Do you have the only complete series that I’ve been able to find on RUclips? … thanks for putting this together for us! 😊👍

      From my memory, very few TSW locks had portage docks. Loading and unloading the canoe was definitely an obstacle each day. I found it much more comfortable not wearing a shirt. I don't remember encountering any deerflies, and the mosquitoes were pretty minimal at that time of year, so I don't think I ever put on insect repellent. My recommendation is to do it from Port Severn to Trenton, as you'll have more favourable winds, but also because there is noticeable current from Hastings to Trenton. Best of luck on your adventure!

      Awesome, I'm sure you'll have a blast on the Trent-Severn :) Anything is possible, but I doubt I would bring a folding bike on future canoe trips. I just don't think I would use it enough to make it worthwhile.
