  • In this video I talk about the reasons why I decided to sell my ARRI Alexa Classic and invest in the RED Komodo. There are tons of things to consider when choosing to purchase or rent a particular camera. I'm sharing my personal experience owning the Alexa Classic for two years and how it helped me to grow as a Cinematographer.

I have two ARRI classics and I have that same EXACT experience. I thought you were also going to mention that because of the weight you have to get the most expensive gimbals. I think at this point in time, the ARRI classic is only a great investment if you are doing fully independent films which have a lot of static shots.

Tanner. Superb video. Thank you! Thank you! ULTRA RELEVANT in 2022 and probably beyond. You have an interesting point about weight and needing an assistant to run the camera. I shoot Sony F5 (big brother to FS5 which I also have at the moment) and the F5 is friendly to a single operator environment as the camera menu faces the operator. However, if an assistant was available, I can see how the menu facing the operator could be more than cumbersome as the assistant would be reaching past the operator’s right ear and face which would be distracting and inefficient time wise. My F5 is 12-13 pounds with a small lens so it is difficult for me to imagine a 25 pound camera. I wonder if a lighter weight B camera could be combined with the Alexa for gimbal work or when weight is an issue. I too am curious to know your opinions on Komodo vs Alexa. To me they are different tools for different jobs. I think a Komodo would be convenient and portable, but I’ve not used one, and based on the images I seen (many videos with different DPs) It’s no where near being a replacement for my F5 (with 4K upgrade) unless the Komodo is on a gimbal. I’ve never put my F5 on a gimbal and have no plans to do so. Too much financial risk for me and I cannot afford a professional gimbal operator. I love the handheld non-jittery motion of my F5 when shoulder mounted or hand held. I also love the look of the Alexa. So smooth. I don’t shoot things that other people have written or offer production services at the moment so I have the luxury of only needing to meet Netflix camera requirements (if I ever submit something to Netflix) however I understand that clients for production work want what they want, and rightfully so since it’s their money and their project they’re funding. It would be no different than if I was financing a film and the DP had an 8K RED but I wanted to rent Alexa Classics. It’s not their film, it’s my film. If a DP gave me much pushback on this I’d probably find another DP. I’m 100% serious on this. If we’re shooting with potatoes, and I like the potato look, then anyone eye rolling persons on set can go find a gig that better suites their own personal tastes. Thank you again for this awesome and helpful video. 👍

4K is a gimmick. People who know nothing about cinematography want it to look like a videogame ("sharp" across the frame, no DOF).

00:00 2 14bit readouts combined into 16bit linear raw is the somethint you're looking for. Almost no prosumer camera apart from the xh2s even does a 14bit readout from the sensor.
If you want to do this on a much smaller scale but get the benefit of that image quality, try using magic lantern crop mood. You get real 14bit raw readout

Thanks so much for your video. It had such a nice measured and professional tone and quality and it was a real pleasure hearing your thoughts. Meanwhile I am super impressed by the grade of this video too as it could be described in exactly the same way especially since you shot it on the Komodo. Is that right? I would have sworn it was shot on an Alexa. As a Komodo owner and lover of the arri look I would love to know what your key light is and your basic grade/LUT process. Thanks so much. I haven’t seen the Komodo look so Arri like before. I know there are lots of conversion LUTs or CST processes out there but the roll off and contrast is very Arri?! Cool, man. What do you think about the sigma fp? I believe that camera shoots 4K. The color science of that camera is incredible. To me, the best color science of any other cinema camera below $10K I’ve ever seen (except for used Alexa, of course). Also, with the sigma fp, you get your choice of 3 RAW formats (cinema DNG, prores raw, braw). Computers are so fast now, processing cinema DNG files are easy and can be transcoded to prores 444 with alpha. Cost of storage is cheap enough to facilitate a cinema DNG workflow too. @RobinetProductions 2 года назад +1

@@TannerGrandstaff agreed. Now when it comes to making a living as a filmmaker, this is where is can get complicated. The technology to make great “looking” video is everywhere, it’s available to almost everyone, and the iPhone “pro” is a good example of… okay so does that mean you are a professional? Being a professional meant (at one time I believe) 60% of your income comes from that particular trade. So does that mean someone can make a living with an iPhone 13? What does this mean for other filmmakers? How much should iPhone users charge? What does this mean for the industry, and anyone with their phones can create what they want, does this mean the video market and services are diminishing in value?
A lot of people mistake pretty for great cinematography. There ARE reasons why cinema cameras do what they do, and cost so damn much, because that extra 10% you need that cost you $50,000 makes a difference for the latitude you can’t get with a telephone.

I've had my Alexa Classic since 2017 and has made me a bunch of dough, but you are right, it's a beast back-breaker to work with because of the weight. I also own the Komodo, and let me tell you, there is nothing like the magical lovely filmic cream that the Alexa produces, I have the Odyssey 7q+ for ARRIRAW and the quality is just like the Alexa Mini. I only have the Komodo for the buzzword, but I hate using it, it is so clunky and it just doesn't give the dreamy silky skin tones and color that Alexa delivers. I rarely shoot with the Alexa because of the weight, and because everything needs to be heavy duty to use it. But if you want your videos or commercials to look like the high end ones, only Alexa delivers the look. Komodo is nice, but it ain't no Alexa. It just doesn't have the secret fairy dust magic sauce.

Love to hear that! And I hear you, there’s a real magic quality to the Alexa sensor and color science. I think the Komodo (RED cameras in general) just has a different look to work with in the grading process.

@@TannerGrandstaff Agreed. I own both and I hate using the Komodo. Start up time and black balancing are a pain and get old fast. Also the image isn't close to the Alexa and redcode will fill up your drives quick!

Dude, you bought an Alexa Classic in 2020 and you were wondering why you couldn't rent it out? The fact that you made a video about this in 2022 is just mindboggling. This is like the most unnecessary video ever...
