Selling my ARRI Alexa Classic in 2022
Просмотров 38 тыс.2 года назад
In this video I talk about the reasons why I decided to sell my ARRI Alexa Classic and invest in the RED Komodo. There are tons of things to consider when choosing to purchase or rent a particular camera. I'm sharing my personal experience owning the Alexa Classic for two years and how it helped me to grow as a Cinematographer. ARRI footage from Kitty Coen's new music video "Bad Bad Liar" rucli...
Deep Breaths (Short Film) shot on ARRI Alexa Classic

Elizabeth was recently diagnosed with cancer and decided to shave her head the night before starting chemotherapy. She asked me to capture the moment. While processing her diagnosis, she would repeatedly tell me she felt like she was drowning. She's always had a fear of open ocean and being under water. Today, despite her fears, she continues to be brave and courageous as she carries on with he...

Captured on ARRI, RED, and Panasonic cameras. For more information, visit www.tannergrandstaff.com
You can record audio with the Alexa classic, you need the adapter and amp
00:00 2 14bit readouts combined into 16bit linear raw is the somethint you're looking for. Almost no prosumer camera apart from the xh2s even does a 14bit readout from the sensor. If you want to do this on a much smaller scale but get the benefit of that image quality, try using magic lantern crop mood. You get real 14bit raw readout
super well put together video. love it
I bought one because I need to exercise/weights so it motivates me to do home videos of my pets while getting good exercise and cardio. I decided this might attract others with a similar mindset and to my surprise calls started coming in so I started the Arricersize program with 2 centers now open and class sizes average 42 people a day.
I'll buy it!!!! 😊
Was this shot on an Alexa
I can guarantee he's already regretted it.
No
Very insightful, thank you.
Very moving, I love the water shots!
What type of lens was this shot with? It looks incredible.
Thank you! This was all shot on the Xeen 35mm Cine Prime. The color cast from that lens is quite green, but after correcting it and grading a look - it’s lovely.
what stabilizer did you use with the classic?
Desn’t need
Hah the way you out the frame is amazing
@2:30 is very easy to feed the ARRI scratch audio , lots of options.
Would love to buy.
How Is she doing?
Do you still have this camera? I’m interested in buying
I recently acquired the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema 6k. Can’t wait to use that one on projects! 😊
Excellent master shots. Good luck from MAURITIUS.
Thank you!
You can record Arriraw 2.8k on a Classic *with* an Atomos ninja V (pro kit?) or a "recorder *like* an Atomos Ninja" (aka an Odyssey7 or Gemini444) ? Because on the Atomos website, they don't talk about the Classic, just the compatibility with the Amira and the Mini with the AN V pro kit.
Real Life+Real Emotions =Bravery+Courage.
Have you sold it yet?
Yes.
@@TannerGrandstaff Im looking for one. I wonder if I can put an atomos shogun to use as external monitor via SDI. I see some listings with no EVF, that could work for me If I find one with no EVF because I have a shogun. Did you ever try that?
@@johncharlesgerald8247 I didn’t use a shogun but I used the SDI port to monitor out to a Small HD. Important thing to note: the SDI port (along with the entire output module) needed to be replaced after owning this for a year and a half. It was an expensive replacement. When that component failed, I had to use the EVF to monitor my image until I sent it out to get fixed.
@@TannerGrandstaff Great info if you don’t mind me asking how much did they charge you for that repair? So as far as the SDI output I’m sure I can hook up any monitor to it that has an SDI input including the shogun without a problem right?
@@johncharlesgerald8247 it was about half of what they’re worth at the moment. And yes, any monitor with SDI input should work fine.
i have seen this beast in action at it was filming at 1080p it shocked it me that is why i dont care about 4K I LOVE The ARRI Classic 1080p footage that is why am going to put my heart on it till i get it
My dream camera am raising cash i pray that one day that will be in my room. i total agree with agreement 1 is am going lose my entire savings am cool with i ill get cash
What did you shot this video on?
Amazing video Tanner! I was shocked to hear you're ditching the Arri for the RED Komodo, I'm currently debating between these two cameras. How's your experience with the RED been so far? How do you feel the image competes with the Alexa Classic? Cheers!
After about four months, I have zero regrets switching to the Komodo. Having this powerhouse of a small-form cinema camera has so many advantages for practical work and maneuvering. I think it’s a completely personal debate for what you’re seeking professionally. I can still pitch and rent ARRI camera systems in town for commercial work when it’s the right camera for the job. Making a video all about this soon!
@@TannerGrandstaff Thanks for the reply! Looking forward to the next video 👍
I can attest to the quality of R3D HQ files. When exposed properly, it is incredible. Loving my Komodo. The glass you use with it is equally as important but when planned for purpose, everything is just wow.
Ok, i got to ask. Aside the size & weight and a few more cons. Does 'nt the sensor & color management on it's own is reason enough to keep it?
Good work! Very nice. Wish you didn't use music though. I think it tells us how to feel and maybe we should just derive it from within ourselves.
Everybody should watch Steve Yedlin’s Resolution Demo!!
Great video. Can you please post a link to the digital slate you used?

Wow amazing work. Thanks for sharing
I’m also in Nashville! Would love to work together. I’ve used the Arri Alexa mini on many occasions and I’m a BMPCC 6K pro owner operator and I love them both. Red is also fantastic, I hope to see your journey on this channel using it!
Hey RJ! Let's meet for coffee sometime. I just followed you on Instagram. Let's chat!
Beautiful
Surprised you didn't go to the black magic pocket cinema cameras or even alexa mini or even an older red scarlet 6k.
amazing work !!!
Thank you!
If only ARRI reused the sensor, pair it with modern electronics and put it in a compact housing, and sell it at a competitive price (coz, you know 2.8K at max) they would still be selling this like a hot cakes...
But.... That's basically the Alexa mini
Thats exactly what they did. Its called the Alexa LF and they want 80k for it 😔 if you want the sensor that they haven't changed since 2010 while having bragging rights for clients...buy the Classic.
Takes a lot of balls for an Arri shooter to confess they like shooting with RED :) I mean, I own and operate on a RED, but there is this elitist thing with Arri shooters, it makes me giggle.
My philosophy is all cameras are just tools. Some are more fitting than others for different types of work. Creatively and functionally, they are all strong in their own ways. I love seeing what people are capable of with an iPhone… LOL
@@TannerGrandstaff agreed. Now when it comes to making a living as a filmmaker, this is where is can get complicated. The technology to make great “looking” video is everywhere, it’s available to almost everyone, and the iPhone “pro” is a good example of… okay so does that mean you are a professional? Being a professional meant (at one time I believe) 60% of your income comes from that particular trade. So does that mean someone can make a living with an iPhone 13? What does this mean for other filmmakers? How much should iPhone users charge? What does this mean for the industry, and anyone with their phones can create what they want, does this mean the video market and services are diminishing in value? A lot of people mistake pretty for great cinematography. There ARE reasons why cinema cameras do what they do, and cost so damn much, because that extra 10% you need that cost you $50,000 makes a difference for the latitude you can’t get with a telephone. I completely support creators of all kinds of any degree, but where is the professional realm going with the gap closing on equipment?
@@RobinetProductions We should chat over coffee sometime… This is a wonderful topic to discuss. Thank you for sharing some of your thoughts!
@@TannerGrandstaff Yeah man let’s do it! I did like your video, I hope you saw that camera! I recently just sold my Epic-W, I upgraded to the Raptor, But it took me longer than I thought to sell that piece of equipment!
Tanner. Superb video. Thank you! Thank you! ULTRA RELEVANT in 2022 and probably beyond. You have an interesting point about weight and needing an assistant to run the camera. I shoot Sony F5 (big brother to FS5 which I also have at the moment) and the F5 is friendly to a single operator environment as the camera menu faces the operator. However, if an assistant was available, I can see how the menu facing the operator could be more than cumbersome as the assistant would be reaching past the operator’s right ear and face which would be distracting and inefficient time wise. My F5 is 12-13 pounds with a small lens so it is difficult for me to imagine a 25 pound camera. I wonder if a lighter weight B camera could be combined with the Alexa for gimbal work or when weight is an issue. I too am curious to know your opinions on Komodo vs Alexa. To me they are different tools for different jobs. I think a Komodo would be convenient and portable, but I’ve not used one, and based on the images I seen (many videos with different DPs) It’s no where near being a replacement for my F5 (with 4K upgrade) unless the Komodo is on a gimbal. I’ve never put my F5 on a gimbal and have no plans to do so. Too much financial risk for me and I cannot afford a professional gimbal operator. I love the handheld non-jittery motion of my F5 when shoulder mounted or hand held. I also love the look of the Alexa. So smooth. I don’t shoot things that other people have written or offer production services at the moment so I have the luxury of only needing to meet Netflix camera requirements (if I ever submit something to Netflix) however I understand that clients for production work want what they want, and rightfully so since it’s their money and their project they’re funding. It would be no different than if I was financing a film and the DP had an 8K RED but I wanted to rent Alexa Classics. It’s not their film, it’s my film. If a DP gave me much pushback on this I’d probably find another DP. I’m 100% serious on this. If we’re shooting with potatoes, and I like the potato look, then anyone eye rolling persons on set can go find a gig that better suites their own personal tastes. Thank you again for this awesome and helpful video. 👍
A beautiful film...both visually and emotionally. I am glad she is well now!
Dude, you bought an Alexa Classic in 2020 and you were wondering why you couldn't rent it out? The fact that you made a video about this in 2022 is just mindboggling. This is like the most unnecessary video ever...
Why did you watch it then, genius?
@@matthewphillips5483 how could I have an opinion about it without watching it?
Cheers brov
It’s a beast and sucks. I’m a 1st ac and I hate it!
Great insight. What setup are you using for this interview? The colors and look are amazing. 🤘
Thank you! My key light is a 5.5K Westcott Octabox and my kick is an Aputure lightstorm LS-1C also set to 5.5K. My camera is set 5.5 kelvin as well. I applied a free LUT from Red’s website called “Blau” that subtly shifts the red hue into a more teal space. Minor contrast curve adjustments as well.
Hi Tanner, Awesome work and great video. I love as well your colours in your main headshot of this video. Can you share how you colour grade your footage?
Thank you for watching! After some minimal exposure and contrast curve adjustments, I applied a free LUT from Red’s website called “Blau” that subtly shifts the red hue into a more teal space. To me, this felt more familiar to the Arri color science.
This video was amazing, Tanner this was a fun story
Thank you!
Great video …. Wanted one …now I know
Excellent explanation Tanner! I'm so drawn to the Classic. It has such a good feel to it's footage! Much love from your neighbor over in East Tennessee🙏🏼
Howdy, neighbor!
Very moving, and your production fits the story being told. All the best for Elizabeth, I read below she fully recovered.
Thank you
Did ya sell it yet? I’m interested in buying
Love the Alexa, 2k on Alexa is better than 4k on a lot of cameras, especially at 4444. Also, it’s quite hard to even tell the difference between 2k and 4k in a lot of scenarios, yet The demand for it is there. Some comparisons of 2k and 4k on Alexa here: ruclips.net/video/zIedETO3tI4/видео.html
Love your channel
I’ll buy it 😁
