The song is written in memory of award winning broadway actor Nick Cordero. He is the actor that died from Covid 19 complications, not long after having a leg amputated. The last line about "he looks just like you" is about his baby son who is less than one year old.

The song was inspired by BLM protests and Covid patients that’ve lost their lives to the virus. In his own words..this is what he said:
“I wrote it on the day of a Black Lives Matter protest back in June. I had spent the day out protesting with my girlfriend [RUclips personality Claudia Sulewski], and protests in general make me feel really optimistic. I think being surrounded by people who also see the flaws in the system is a really positive experience ’cause you go, ‘Oh, my God, I’m not the only one.'”
The emotional track was also inspired by Nick Cordero, who died earlier this year after complications of the coronavirus. Finneas explained, “The other component of the song was [that] I was very closely following Nick Cordero’s story on Instagram, via his wife [Amanda Kloots], and Nick and his wife were not people I’d ever met. I don’t know them at all. I saw the headlines about his health, just like everybody else did. I just became incredibly attached to this family that I’d never met before.”
He does not write Billie’s music. They write it as a team. They have a Grammy interview where they explain the process. Billie is not just a voice.
Well he solely wrote about five or six (i.e. Hostage, When The Party’s Over, Ocean Eyes, Watch..) but you’re correct. They’re 100% a team and both equally talented in different ways! 🖤

TexasTigerDigs Urban Van Life, Knife and Tools Well, sure, it makes sense that he’d write for her more when she was younger. Her skills, as any artists’s, are maturing along with her! She’ll continue to improve even more. I’m excited to see where she goes with it. They’re both extremely musically talented. How I’d put it best is that Billie is an artistic visionary, and Finneas is a musical genius. That’s why they work so well together. They complement one another. :)
