Thanks to all the J's and Edward. Really enjoyed this session. I have the game sitting on my shelf for almost a year now.Your session has encouraged me to try it again. There is a steep learning curve like your guests have said, plus any comments I have read it probably shines beginning in 33- full game. Keep the wargames coming.
Great run-through, a pleasure to watch! Hats off to Geoff on his rules overview, his guidance and comments throughout the session really helps clarify things. Special thanks to Joe for his early example of Italy's preference for form over function :P
After watching this and playing my own ftf game starting in 1939 (didn't finish) and playing 1933 scenario solo, seems that 1933 is the way to go. Germany seems to just have too many advantages in the 1939 start. Rules explanation and being able to see the game played really helped to clarify things.
I should add that when Ed lost that fleet due to retreat I believe that was an error as well. Naval units that retreat first must move to a base within range, but if not able to may move to any base within LOC... so I think it should have been moved back to England and helped in defence there.
I think there was something screwed up in the later part of the session: I think at one point someone was saying "we are all at war" but it didn't appear that the Soviet Union declared war on anyone or vice versa.
At the 3:54:20 mark, why wasn't Jess interrupting with the Soviets? She should have been attacking the Germans by that point. Either way, a great video
Just watch the entire caboodle. Still a little on the fence on this game but have to say using the historical 1939 starting point they play by the west showed that historically why the Europe first strategy first made sense. Also problems with losing North Africa caused. Wonder in the game seemed neither submarine warfare or strategic bombing were a factor.
Will watch, but we have shelved Cataclysm. Too many one-off rules reduces play-ability. It just isn't a fun game. Huge potential but needs rule simplification or some way to track all the little rules.
Many rules errors in this session, hopefully it hasnt ruined the experience for you. Ive played with several groups and all have made errors, it is somewhat of a finicky game. In this session Diplomacy vs Spain was not allowed as it was in civil war. This directly led to Ed losing a base and fleet. Also, USSR rolls 3 dice for all stability checks other than home front, but the game was precarious at that point. I scrubbed through quickly so Im sure there were other errors.
There are so many things about this game that remind me of miniature games for WWII, and that is not a good thing in my book, because I don't like miniature games :( I am surprised that you liked it so much.
so I actually watched all 5+ hours and really enjoyed it, first time across your channel.

Sounds very historical to me :P

19:10 3.4 says you can replace a reserved counter.

Fortress units can move. You remove them from the board and place them on the next round and then u place it on the next round

The attacks after Moscow was taken would not have had the Soviets out of supply because they could trace LOCs to other production sites.

Not being able to take our Britain because of Canada seemed weird
I miss technology in this game :( otherwise unique, but looong 😁
US should aide China civil war from the start ALWAYs IMO. Really helps to get those precious flags for them.
