I've made the jump to a 29er this year. Came from a 26er, so it was a bit difficult for me at the beggining. I've got used to it now, but it definitely rides differently. I think the biggest difference for me is that it gains much more speed on steep descends as my 26er did. I need to use the brakes way more because of that, which can make them overheat on longer downhills. Never had this problem on the 26er.

Nope. People tend to forget that 27.5 is actually 650b and as such is only 25mm bigger than 26. The industry started calling it 27.5 to identify the standard as halfway between the existing 26 and 29 size . 26=559MM, 650b(27.5)=584mm and 29=622mm.

    • @Ethelred77

    • @thetick744
      @thetick744 5 лет назад +7

29ers do NOT have 28 inch rims! You are probably confusing them with 700c which are commonly called 28 inch wheels. They have the same erto of 622 mm (so actually about 24 inches)but wheel size and rim size are not the same. Fit a spindly road tyre to a 700c rim and you get a diameter of around 28 inches, got a much larger mtb tyre to a 29er rim and you get an outside diameter of 29 inches.

After watching a dozen of these comparison videos, I have made my decision. I'm just gonna ride and stop splitting hairs. It seems that everyone needs a bike that throughout the course of one trail, you would need to switch your bike out about 5 times to get that perfect ride. So here's the philosophical concept of the day.

My first MTB was a hard tail 29er (Trek X Caliber 8). It was ok. Then I got a FS 27.5 (YT Capra) and that's when I found out how much fun MTB really is. Easy more nimble and dynamic. Any 29 benefit such as rolling over bigger obstacles with ease is negated by how sluggish they handle, and frankly how boring they make riding. Definitely not going back to 29 again.
    IMHO of course. 😁

I love 29 having changed from 27.5 last year. Personal preference but I feel for most riders who aren’t seriously good, the extra rolling speed and smoothness will overcome any of the marginal drawbacks and result in the best/fastest riding experience. Also speed = height in the jumps too and I find that I carry more speed and make trails flow better with the bigger wheels. Granted a better rider wouldn’t need the speed boost!

1.) can we get like an hour-long montage of the guys riding? It’s always so mesmerizing 😆. 2.) I’m barely over 5’ and just upgraded my fork and wheelset, going from 27.5 to 29 and I absolutely love it. Took 2 seconds to get used to maneuvering the bigger wheel, but the rolling speed is so worth it! (Size S Trek Fuel full sus trail bike on a variety of eastern U.S. trails - it’s super versatile!) 3.) Isabeau Courdurier is just a smidge shorter than I am and even she is now riding (and winning everything!) on a 29er. Hard to argue that!

    • @stepato

Eganwp back in 1992 when Honda introduced their iconic sports bike Fireblade motorcycle they put a 16 inch wheel on the front to speed up the steering and a 17 on the rear... it didn’t take long before everyone wanted to convert back to the standard 17 on the front, which Honda did do a few years later... too twitchy. Track motorcycles got 16.5 rims and wider tyres to change the contact patch and handling plus sidewall height makes a big difference on motorcycles, especially when they’re in the 200kg, 200bhp, 200mph ball park... almost all road based motorcycles have 17 inch rims front and rear. On mountain bikes we’ve got much less power (more beer and pies) so the smaller rear wheel would feel more snappy for acceleration (effectively gearing us down (I put a smaller front sprocket on my Yamaha R1, like it needs more acceleration...)) and the larger front wheel rolls over obstacles easier (try pushing a shopping trolley up a kerb)... not tried a mullet yet interested to do so...

I think bike sizes, brands, etc. are subject to thousands of variables dependent on the person and trail conditions. What I have found is there are hundreds of options on bikes that make a difference and the goal is to find what fits the person and makes for a more enjoyable ride, after all that is why we do it! I have an idea for a new video series … "budget (probably used) mountain bikes".1. Choose three presenters: "Neil vs. Blake vs. Doddy".2. Each one has a budget (maybe 1.500 to 2.000 GBP) on which he has to purchase and if necessary repair a bike.3. Go to a nice destination like Saalbach-Hinterglemm for a few days and have some great challenges.4. Last challenge: Sell the bikes again. This challenge is full on Top Gear style: You may start this challenge in a local trail center where the presenter will present their bikes. And right before the trip starts, each presenter has the opportunity to modify or repair his bike, using the cash he did not spend on the bike purchase. At the destination for this challenge (in my example Saalbach Hinterglemm) you will have a number of challenges (maybe timed runs, jumping, uphill, Instagram challenge, …). You can do numerous video for a whole week as some sort of special series. In the end each presenter has to sell his bike again… I think you got my idea… Best regards :)

I’m sorry it seems we’ll have to wait another year or two for this (a good mullet) to arrive as the industry seems to be milking us on what’s already new this year, though mostly stuff irrelevant of geo like 12 speed and wireless.
But, the industry is also just further letting us get used to or, indoctrinating us into, slacker head angles and steeper seat tube angles before introducing us to “the new concept of an industry marketed 279er”. The 279er might not be new, but the marketed version would def be!

shocker: super-skilled rider like Blake could make any type of trail look smooth on a bigger (or any sized) bike! :0 ! :P
    But the reality is:
it isn't that the 29 can't do all those things, the question is which is BETTER for your size or riding style.
look at other vids, are his tail-whips bigger on the 27.5...yes.
Does someone 5'1" look silly trying to navigate a huge 29er (when it'd be much better geometry for them to be on a 27.5, or dare I even say an old 26)...yes
I have a buddy who owns a shop. Whenever he had similar bikes in 27.5 AND 29 versions - whenever the consumer test rode both, 9 times out of 10 the rider liked the feel & handling of the 27.5 better. However, over the course of a few short years, most of the companies just simply stopped making them. ??? The industry does a disservice to the consumer by pushing the products they want to sell - rather than offering proper size/geometry ranges & letting the consumer drive innovations.
