- If you have a Whirlpool oven that won't heat, then this video is made to give you a few major ideas on how to diagnose and fix an oven not heating. We inspect & test a Whirlpool oven element, deal with an oven control board, and a few other things that could cause you to have a Whirlpool oven not working - along with ways to rule out a lot of different things.
Although this video is a guide for a Whirlpool Electric Oven, the same steps are going to be the same for practically every major brand on the market, and both coil top stoves and glass-top stoves. This video is not a good guide for gas stoves.
Here are a few basic parts and tools we're dealing with in the video to fix a range:

Very good video. Definitely covers everything that could possibly be wrong with the oven, in terms that anyone can understand. Thanks!
Best video on DIY to fix an oven problem. Excellent explanation on what to do! Thank you for teaching this knowledge.
YOU ARE MY HERO!!!! Thank you so much for having posted this - PERFECT video to fix an oven with issues. I was just able to fix my rental property's oven for my renter. You made this easy-breezy! Thanks so much for your generosity in sharing your knowledge and expertise, and thank you for making such a crystal clear, easy-to-follow and understand, video, where you tell us absolutely everything we need to know ("normally on an oven you would get a range of X to X when you do this to this...). A+++++++
Thank you very much. This was exactly what I was looking for to diagnose my oven. Well done!
My Whirlpool stove wouldn't heat over 150 degrees. Didn't think to check stovetop until your video. It won't come on. So now the journey of figuring out if we have a bad breaker, outlet, control box, etc. Good video!!!
Great video! loved the opening an nice save at the end. love the added graphics that provide emphasis or point to specific targets. using this was able to problem solve! thanks! also appreciated the offer to connect if more help needed! and follow!
Thanks for heating things up, Ben.
I troubleshoot everything like you said and it was the keyboard on top your video really help thank you from Denton Texas
Great job explaining and making it easy!
Great video! helped solved the issues with my Oven and range. Thank you so much!
This is such a good overview, thanks for making it
Thank you for the detailed explanation. I have a problem of one button switching to heating elements on the top cookers, a big one a small one.
This is the best video I have seen in regarding to the same problem I am having with my Stove, Your video has made me more confident about what to check for hopefully saving me a ton of money, I just want to say thank you for taking the time to make this video, It was very well explained I love❤❤ that once again thank you.
I love ur explaination, It was so simple, easy to understand with clear view of ur camera.
Really excellent vid, good camera work, clear explanation of each component & diagnostic process, good safety warnings. There was a bit of noise on the audio near the end.
Thanks for the comments. I try to vet as much audio as I can on the videos prior to posting them, but sometimes the headphones/ect I use don't pick up the noise I'd like, or something happens on export where background audio isn't striken from the track.
Oh wow, the audio around 10min, 40sec is insanely bad. This happened, it seems, between processing on RUclips. I'll see if that can be fixed or if I gotta re-upload
This was a Great video. Super helpful. Thanks you
Great details for troubleshooting. Thank you
Well done Ben. Easily found my stove problem thanks to your video. Terminal block and wiring repair needed on my 2YO WP model. Seems to be a common occurrence based on comments from your video and others. Lots of terminal block replacement videos in youtube land but nothing on wiring repair. Might be something to address in a future video.
Good idea. I'll see if I can do that sometime.
Half of my oven just died, after lasting 2.5 years max.
Thank you very much your video really help me figure out my problem on the stove I’m here in Denton Texas
Thank you. Very informative video. I’m going to troubleshoot my current stove before I invest in a new one.
Thank you! This video was very helpful for diagnosing my oven issue.
Excellent presentation, thank you.
Thank you! Your video got me right to the issue... the bottom heating element was defective! and the bulb glass also cracked!!! And it happens that I have not damped away my previous range of the same series, so i was able to harvest the right parts and things are working great! Thank you! My wife be happy now! lol 😀
Glad it helped!
EXCELLENT! Thank you so much! Your channel is great!
"I hope that your stove is as hot as my..." this is gold. I am entertained good sir
Thank you!! Very clear and concise.
Thank you for helping me troubleshoot. I changed the probe, but I'm not equipped to change the control pad which may be the problem. Depending on how much it cost to hire a service guy I may buy another stove.
Great video! 👍
Awesome explaining
Thanks for your video. I just want to be sure my control board is the issue. I tested for continuity on the broil element and that works. I tested the voltage to the terminals while they were connected to the broil element and they were reading at 5 volts. I assume there is an issue with the control board. If the element say was defective I should still see 240V correct?
Excellent, as usual
very informative, for all the diy s
Definitely made me laugh a few times. Excellent comments, and seriously my first smile of the day!
Excellent video thumbs up 👍
Great teaching video.
I am not talking about you love life. I like it. Lol. Very informed keep up the good work.
Bro this is such a helpful video. I just subscribed. Thank you.
Thanks for the sub!
very good presentation
Thank you very much lots to learn
great video Thank you!
Thanks for the information
Awesome job thank you so much
Thanks great video!
Thanks, this video was helpful. My problem seems to be a bit more involved. My oven will not come up to full temperature unless I use "rapid preheat". So, if I try to bake at 350 the oven gets to 295 and stays there. If I switch to rapid preheat it will go to full temperature. At room temperature the temperature sensor reads 1100 ohms which matches your video. Both the top (broil) and bottom element seem to be working and I am getting about 220 vac to the range. Everything seems to point to the board. Do you agree?
great video thanks mate
excellent video
hey great video.... i have a similar range but the top oven element comes on and does not cycle even after range reaches temp. set point.
Helpful.. thanks
awesome video
Thank you for responding. Figured it out. Wire on left side wasn't even long enough to
get an alligator clip on it. Took off lower back panel and wires were there. I never work
on something with power on. 220 / 240 Volts. No way.
Element is on order. Thank you for your video.
SAved me $300! Thanks!
Great video. Oven element was toasted. Got ohm reading of OL, anyway. One of the wires never came out of the insulation. Have to go
fishing for it. Any suggestions.
The other wire stayed attached, and I put a clip on it. Have good light and needle nose pliers to fish for the wire that disconnected in the
insulation.
If possible, turn off electric at box and pull stove from the wall to fish out from the backside
Very informative video. I got that same oven and I went to go turn off my breaker and after turning it back on my oven gives me F9 error and will not work or heat up now. It was working fine earlier tho I’m so confused
My whirlpool seems to heat up to temp. If i set it to 350 it goes to 350, but then drops temp to about 250 or less. Yet the display still says 350. I realized this by turning the oven off and back on, then the display reads the 200 something temp as it heats back up, then cools down again without changing the display. What could the problem be? 😟
Check thermostat
Hi. The first thing you mentioned was that you would talk about what to look for if nothing happens. My stove is a W10198585A. If I unplug it and plug it back in, it works as expected for a while then reverts back to dead. The clock works. The "hot surface" light works but no heat anywhere. Reboot and it works again for a bit. I checked the connectors, re-seated them all and am trying again. Any ideas?
I like that. Thanks.
Hey I have a Maytag oven and my element got a hot spot and broke in half. I ordered a replacement element and I plugged in the 2 wire and now when I heat up the oven it doesn't heat up...any thoughts? Thanks
Hello! I have an older Model, and can't find my specific model anywhere online. Would a new model terminal block fit my older oven?
Ben - in a situation where the Broil function works Ok but the Oven not even indicates on the display when selected - what checks do we do for that?
Good job bro ...
VERY GOOD VIDEO! Question: I have seen a video showing how to reset the unit with the buttons "cancel cancel start 3 3 3 3 3 3 start start"
Is there any reason to try or not to try this?
Also, is there not a "high temp shutoff" device on this unit or is the thermostat the only thing that turns off the element when the temperature climbs way high?
thanks,
Bret
Dammam love life will need to wait then :)
Extremely helpful video. I have the same oven w10432689a with the same issue. I have followed your steps and believe in is the control board. However I can not seem to find that control board anywhere on the internet. I have followed your link, Google, Sears, Whirlpool, Amazon and have had no luck. Any advice? Thank for the video.
Use any of the parts websites to determine the model# of the BOARD you need. What I typically do then is just do a general Google search for the board and then go hunting to find anyone that could have it... Many times, if its old, the result ends up on EBay.
Hey I have the same oven as you and I was wondering if you know how to put it on self clean without the latch
Love your video, have wp that looks a lot the one you have in the video. My oven works but the stovetop has the issue. Left side burners work Right side dose not work. Any thoughts?
You'd have to look at the burners as well as relays where the knobs are for damage, and see whats bad. Odd that both don't work, but you'd want to unplug it and slowly go through all the wires and check for damage
Thank you 👉 brother good job I like u video thank you
Ken, thanks for your videos. Do you have a video with recommendations for an oven and microwave?
Not yet. Will be doing them soon
Is the lower bake element supposed to cycle on and off? It has 236 volts when on, but cycles on and off
Hi. Great video. In my case my oven preheats to the required temperature but then begins to lose heat and doesnt heat back up. I have replaced the element which was badly cracked and when it continued having the same problem i replaced the temperature sensor but still problem exists. What else could be the problem other than the motherboard? Thanks
Control boars. Relays are going bad
Very good video!!!
When I turn on the range and it goes up to 395F instead of the 450F set point. What could be a problem with a range?
Look up how to adjust the thermostat reading for your model.
I have a GE stove. I had power was out and think when power came on, it might been too much power. The stove top works. Is there fuses for the oven and control panel?
Thank you
thank you for a very informative video... If your oven heats properly when using convection but stays in the pre-heat cycle during Bake and goes no further than 285 degrees - any ideas on the problem?
Does the convection fan have a built-in heating element? Its possible that the convection is using the broil+convection fan heater, and the bake element or relay system has gone bad. You'd have to use a multimeter to check & test the various connections to see if the elements are bad,. or its board-related.
This is my problem too.
My issue is with an electric lg oven. The convection fan element doesn't seem to heat up at all but the main bake element heats up. Do I need to turn it on to read the relays and/or element? I don't have much experience with HV so I'd rather call someone if I do.
Great video!
I appreciate it!
On frozen bake or convect there's no issue with my dive, but if I just set it to bake it won't get over 360. Any thoughts?
Hey Ben, appreciate the video but I hope you can give me a few extra pointers!! My whirlpool accubake only heats up to 300F on bake and 400F on broil when set to 500F. It only has one element on the top of the oven. Element and thermostat resistance are all good and I don’t see any damage to the control board. Any ideas? Thanks!
Offset or thermostat could be bad
Hi I’ve got a problem my stove when you showed and said if you connect the 2 wire from element and you said wait a few minute for it
Thank You
Best Intro Ever lol. Reminds me of my childhood when I acted up.....
Hi Ben,
My whirlpool oven works when cooking, but whensuttong it off the display goes back to the clock mode, but the oven never shuts off unless I kill the circuit breaker. Any idea of what may be causing this?
Thanks,
Gary
hello, I have a whirlpool stove w/convection. broiler element does not work. I have good continuity on element. I removed both wires from element and have 120 on each wire to cabinet, but have only continuity between them both. I think I should have 240V but not sure. (model # RF367LXSS 0.) IF you could help that would be great. Thank you
Hi Ben. Great site. I spend a fair amount of time here, trying to absorb as much as possible. Sure appreciate it! Could you give me an informed opinion? I have had quite a few customers concerned with how their oven is heating, and the majority of those customers seems to have a W10779716 bake element, which is a pretty "simple" element with no loops in it to heat the center portion. I can't help but think another part might lead to better results. Something like W10276483, that looks rated the same (3600W) and looks like it would fit. Am I out to lunch,, or maybe missing something, or not considering something? What do you think?
They all work the same as long as they are rated the same. Usually the people complaining are idiots though and it's going to be more of a calibration issue. But if you want to swap elements, it's totally OK to do that.
Very good video! My element is reading 16.6, does that mean that I need to change it?
No, that should be within range
Thank you!
You're welcome!
Hey Ben I have Whirlpool glass top stove /oven My baking element will not get hot temperatures on display will not go higher then 100 degrees. The broiler at top works fine as well as the stove top all work . Any idea what may cause my baking element not to work it also is brand new . Still has the new oven smell when you turn it on we have used it only 3 times .
I'd check for 240v going to the element. That is quite advanced though. I'd unplug the stove, and pull the control board and look for physical damage to the square or rectangular boxes on the control board. Likely, the relay has failed and there may be physical evidence of that such as a burn mark.
Is the stove brand new or the element?
When testing the broil element for continuity I get 15.7, does that mean it is bad and should be replaced? I tried to test the thermostat and could not get any reading but I am not sure I am doing it right. Useful video...
Same here, 16 Ohms. Outside of the range he said, but not by much. How strict is that range?
I get 240 V at the bake and broil elements when the controls are set to BAKE / BROIL. I get about 40 Volts on both elements when I set the controls to BAKE only. Any idea what the problem is? Thanks!!
Hi Ben, thanks for the very informative video. We have almost the exact looking stove, except mine has the fourth prong. The stove top works and also the broiler. It's the lower heat element that isn't working. I've used a multi meter n the actual element is fine. What could it be?
I also checked the thermostat n it is fine also
Usually its the heating relay on the board if the thermostat is fine as well as the heating element.
Thank you! Do I most likely need a new control board?
I had put everything back together after doing so I plugged in the oven, as soon as that happened the wire connector to the bottom heating element sparked! 😬
@@bensappliancesandjunk Can you help us? I ca'nt run my electric glasstop and oven at the same time without tripping the circut breaker. Any ideas? Thanks in advance!
Mine was just 3/4 unplugged from the wall, but great video still.
My thermostat resistance is showing 1.39 and also there is a burnt mark on the far right side in the middle of the motherboard right at the edge voltage coming in to the unit is okay for some reason the oven is heating up really good now being that I unhooked a lead from the motherboard to get the screw out there was connections that were loose that I felt like I pushed in to make better contact but still unsure Thanksgiving is coming up and need to resolve this situation do you have any suggestions?
Best video ever
When turning on my coils on my electric stove the cooktop on light which is usually solid when a coil is on is now flashing, any idea? Coils do get hot
Ugh, I have a newer whirlpool range and recently replaced one of the burner switches but for some reason the display will not reset it still shows that the stove top is on and hot when it is not on or hot. Any ideas????
Great video, Thank you. my heating element is reading only 14 ohms Is this bad?
That should be OK depending on the specific stove.
@@bensappliancesandjunk I have hbl8451uc/01
Hi Ben. I have a WP looks just like this model. Largest front main cooking burner switch was hard to turn a couple times then just fell off. I did some research and it seems it could be the infinity switch? Also, right about that time my broil element stopped working. Not good for a real cook. Can you help please? Are those two proems connected? My son has a meter and his electrical cert a d works for a fire alarm co but lives in another state. If you would be so kind as to steer me in the right direction toward repairing these items maybe I could fix it or somehow get him to help me.
Both things are typically not connected, as the infinity switch is totally separate from the broil element in the vast majority of stoves. A scant few are, but most are totally separate. I'd replace the infinite switch first, then look at what's going wrong w/ broil.
@@bensappliancesandjunk Thank you for your time and advice Ben.
Great video. I have that exact stove. Can you tell me where I can find the Model number on it?
Just a guess... pull the bottom drawer out.. you should see it on the right
Have a fridgidaire oven that will work sometime. I can hear the clicking of the thermostat or whatever clicks when i turn it on. It may work immediately, it may start off working and stop or, it may work eventually. Any idea what can be causing this.
All 4 burners on glass top Amana range suddenly stopped working. Front panel reads “cooktop hot”, but again, no heat. Oven works fine. Is this the thermal fuse possibly? Unit is only 18mo old.
Thermal fuse typically kills heat to oven, not cooktop.
I'd take panel off behind control board and look if a wire has burned up or come off. All of those switches are daisy chained together and one bad wire would likely kill power to all of them
I have a whirlpool electric stove and had a power outage now it shows F9 code,my burners still work but my over don't,any answers to help me fix it
Hello, I have the same overnight and was wondering why the display screen was not on. I went step by step, oven bottom element reads extremely low. But I can’t turn on actual baking setting to test other parts because display won’t turn on. If I replace the baking element would that solve it or is the mother board also a problem?
I am wondering if you ever found an answer to your problem as I am facing a similar situation.
