I’m taking metric spaces and topology this semester. Just this afternoon I spent 4 hours working on a single problem. Talking to my classmates before class they made the solution sound like it took them no longer than 15 - 20 minutes . For me it wasn’t clear, and my internal dialogue was suggesting that I quit mathematics at several points during my problem set. My internal discussion said “You think you’re smart. You’re not smart. It took you four hours to produce this solution. Pathetic. Other kids can produce this in less than half an hour.”
Once I had solved the problem, I felt such a great sense of peace. My internal discussion was now re-affirming thoughts of self love, tranquility and open mindedness when moving onto the next problem.
Despite my difficulties in mathematics, and I personally have found a lot of inner peace studying mathematics. And my intuition keeps telling me that I need to continue. My curiosity to learn more mathematics like Functional Analysis, Symplectic Geometry, Irrational Pattern Functions, Poly Dimensional Topology is so great. I feel compelled to continue.

Good stuff, don't listen to it. I can only imagine that there have also been problems which took you 15 minutes that took others 4 hours, but you're way less likely to talk about those questions and gauge the difficulty that others experienced when working on them!

As far as I'm concerned, like others are saying too, having the _ganas_ to continue for 4 hours and get the solution is maybe a better indicator of a good life long mathematician than just having good talent

    • @spectrelex3051
      @spectrelex3051 4 месяца назад

maths has a way of making you spend 4 hours on a problem. ofc i dont know what it is, but that's totally normal (including the feeling of quitting - been there way too much).

I think the "don't transfer" goes along with "figure out what you want". As a student who did transfer from a community college to a large public university, it was because I wanted the experience. I wanted to experience a university and the university offered more options for what I wanted to major in. I did what I could at community college and I was able to transfer my credits and be happier at the university I chose. It was easy because I was in my mid twenties and I had my then girlfriend, now wife, help me. With that being said, another piece of advice is to have a good support system. Surround yourself with people who want you to succeed and they support your goals.

Do your best to take care of your body, and the rest will follow. Seriously. Exercise boosts not only your mental ability to focus/get through hard work, but levels your mood/mental out so theres less "barriers" to going to clubs/discusison etc and meeting people.

it won't happen if you dont let it happen because adults dont strike conversations as often as kids do in school. but you're in college and college is the ideal place for making connections, because you're surrounded by like minded people of same age as you. dont take this for granted, because outside college even finding someone around your age can be difficult let alone finding ppl that match your interests. and it only lasts a few years, after that you'll be thrown into the real real world and everyone will be serious&business. and it gets more difficult to make friends as people get older. so try and make friends! really just go to college and make the effort of starting a conversation with strangers. you're an introvert so you dont wanna do that, but just do it, it could be the difference between meeting your best friend or not. tho you'll probably meet people you dont click with and it'll be boring, but keep trying, it pays off, your time in college(in life) will be much more enjoyable with a healthy social circle
if you care this is advice coming from an introvert who had no friends in college 2 years ago because i internalized the idea that caring about social life&having friends is only a thing that stupid people do. i changed my habits and now i have friends and i'm a happier person🌞

You do give good advice and this type of advice I think will most definitely help many of us who watch you that are undergrads. One advice I do remember you giving out was you telling us about one of your professors and that he got annoyed or something and that his sayin was "if you don't know it then don't write anything" but your advice was "even if you don't know it, write something down because you might get something out of it anyways" and I think that is very correct because if you put something down I think it is showing you at least tried and care enough.

My one piece of advice for you regarding health and fitness is cooking your own meals and meal prepping. I have a weekly routine of Sunday/Wednesday meal preps. Sunday's meal prep is for monday, tuesday and wednesday lunches and wednesday's meal prep is for thursday, friday, and saturday. I work 6 days a week so that schedule works out for me and I try to work less hours on wednesday to have more time at home. If you struggle to fit workouts in your schedule, I recommend taking 30 minute walks. If you have some physical activity, you will see your results. I have lost ten pounds this semester. PhDs are stressful and time intensive.

in terms of making connections im currently trying to talk and get advice from people cos i think i wanna go into academia but honestly im so disconnected. that stuffs always been harder for me realistically.
anyway this semester is gonna be different. seriously. i appreciate you saying all this stuff as well its so easy for people at my stage to just forget about it all and not worry about this stuff. the future i do not know but my attitude has to change so i will try my best to change it. big respect man.

I don’t know if this applies to whatever you’re studying, I did Physics, but you could look up your favourite lecturers and look at their recent papers. If there’s something that interests you then you could ask to do a project with them over the summer. They might not be able to offer that but if they see you’re enthusiastic then they might give you some names of people in the department. Research is so different from classes - you build familiarity it one area and know what you need to know. It’s a lot more interesting and boosts your confidence.

I appreciate your videos man. I’m an old college student. I’m 28 years old and I am barely getting my bachelors degree in electrical engineering in December. I went to college for a year and a half after high school but dropped out and started working. I went back to college when I was already 25. Doing work and college full time is intense but I somehow managed to get the discipline down, but as I wrap up my bachelors I am getting a little lazy with studying again. But I’m kind of thinking of going for a masters. I’m on the fence about it. On one hand I think it would be a tough and rewarding experience. Hearing you say that it makes you do the things you shoulda been doing in undergrad makes me reconsider though. Anyways your videos really help me stay the course.
    Thanks!

I'm almost 26 and going through a similar experience. Half assed my way through a math degree which, although I was decent at math, I didn't really apply myself to. Didn't know what I wanted to do after I graduated, which was made harder by the fact I couldn't find a job cause COVID was just coming into full swing. After a couple years I decided to take some mechanical engineering courses as a non-degree student. Applied to grad school for mech-e and got accepted although I feel like I'm having second thoughts.

Oh man I say go for it. The time will pass us by regardless. But if you wrap up your masters by the time you're my age you will be in an even better position than you are now. People bust their butts and never even get accepted or the opportunity to try. I'm not saying that implies you have some responsibility to act on the offer, but I think it would be very personally and career-fulfilling/rewarding. @@sidehalls

Hi, I'm a current math major and this video couldn't have come at a better time. At the start of my fall term I took an intro to linear algebra course and was contemplating dropping out of college or switching my major, but I haven't! I'm sticking with it but there are times where I contemplate switching. I fell comfortable knowing that others have also felt those feelings.
I know I'm still early in on my bachelors as a freshman with sophomore standing, but when do you think is an appropriate time in one's undergrad to think if you want to pursue a masters? I went into college thinking about pursuing a masters after my bachelors but sometimes I feel like I get too caught up or a homework problem humbles me. Another question for you or others in the comments, is it ok for you to not fully grasp some concepts when you understand a majority of them? I feel like if I don't know everything, the one thing that I don't know will "get me" in some later class. Thanks!

Undergrad linear algebra? That's like the easiest class. Sorry to be real with you buddy but it's only gonna get way harder. There are no such thing as filter classes in mathematics, the whole subject is a filter.
Also there are NO jobs. You'll probably be forced to do a masters in something actually lucrative. Based on what you've said gradaute school is probably out of the question but you got a few years to mature, so maybe you can get into graduate school to leverage a career.

0:27 what's the difference between college and university?

Universities typically have faculty that conduct research whereas colleges don’t.

So I was doing the right thing when I stopped caring that much about grades and focused on talking to people

Just don't talk to people that hate the subject, that was my mistake. Those people offer no value.

Being good at math has nothing to do with social interactions. I'll just keep never going to class, showing up just for the exams and avoid all that modern toxic communist discourse we are showered with daily in universities.

one point i'd like to make about going to class:
I feel like this only applies to a certain section of courses.
when i was doing my undergrad in computer science its absolutely crucial to go to every single one of the classes or you will soon be very confused
however, i dont find this is the case with memorization heavy courses like biology or business which i have taken, there's actually a positive correlation with not going to class and high grades

that's interesting. why would there be a positive correlation?

@@emese6346 cuz the whole course is just memorization with very little interactions the same there are with coding assignments in CS, especially if you get a bad prof that just reads off the lecture slides. Your time is much more well spent if you were to just read the slides
