Sweet memory from the distant past .... When my wife and I started dating in 1975, I brought her home from college to meet the family. Later in the afternoon, we got away from everybody, went down to the basement room, and worked out a PP&Mish duet of this song. It was the first time we sang together, and it is a magical memory to me. When we came back upstairs afterward, my usually straight forward mother came up with a surprisingly witty quip. She said something o the effect of, "It sounded wonderful, but perhaps you might have picked a love song with a slightly more positive message!" 😄 (RIP Gordon Lightfoot)
Recording in studios with multiple tracks & electronic tricks to make it seem like everyone was in sync are great, but here's the charm of 3 people melding their 3 voices & 2 guitars with only 2 mikes. It somehow seems more like real music. Maybe it's just me.
The first Gordon Lightfoot song I ever heard was this cover by Peter,Paul,an Mary in 1964 was around twelve and The Beatles were the rage of the times. But this song caught my ear and I was captured by it. Such wonderful songs Gordon Lightfoot wrote. RIP.
Did not know until today, that this is a Gordon Lightfoot song!--Was unaware that he was writing songs this early--was anyone more ethereal than Mary Travers--with the greatest hair in music!
No Brasil foi feita uma versão dessa música com o grupo Trio Melodia , sob o título " Se o seu amor fosse pra mim " isso no ano de 1965 e fez um grande sucesso. Em : 30 .08. 2024.🍀
I just love the way this song is portrayed in this version. Never before , or since has such a cold and condescending melody been delivered with such harmony and honest cruelty. They dont make em like this anymore.
indeed. This live performance is a bit rough around the edges, but their perfectly balanced recording was chilling. Gordon Lightfoot composed it but his performance is somewhat lighthearted, as if the narrator is an amusingly oblivious egomaniac. But in PP&M's performance the cruelty seems calculated. Just the opening chords make my heart sink.
Very well put Something about the chemistry of this co-ed trio seems more organic than does an all male or all female trio. Original style and talent for days. If you take any one of PPM by themselves , they would hold their own without struggle, together they remain unparalleled , even in 2021
An absolutely fabulous song about an absolutely not fabulous person. I liked it back in the 60s. (And in a month I'll still like it in my seventies.) :-)
Milt Okun’s arrangements were brilliant. Their execution was flawless. Peter and Paul’s guitar playing, never mentioned, was terrific. And their passion was real. The gold standard.
I also think it's a shame the bass player didn't get more credit, he really added to their sound, and was usually hidden off in the corner. To me he was just as much a part of the group, even if he didn't sing. And no, I'm not a bass player. :) Just a guitar player/singer.
One of a Kind Band You really have to trust your fellow band members to get that harmony out and they were doing 260 shows a year in their day. No auto tuning or gimmicks with them just haunting beauty in their harmony.
Peter, Paul, And Mary, classical, powerful, AMAZING. There is no comparison, no substitutes, no replacements!! (Which year was this wonderful bit of film recorded). RIP Mary Travers!!
First time I heard them was in 1963 on a submarine crossing the Atlantic. I loved them then and still think they are the finest ever. And now that I'm 79, I still love them.
❤😊 humm , que c'est bon ! Cette version plus la française avec ce délicieux accent .Ces 3 voix en harmonie, comment ne pas avoir envie de chanter avec eux !
Hey I like this cover! Didn't know it was a Gordon Lightfoot song, always thought it was Waylon Jennings's since that's the only version I've heard lol
That song is just done so incredibly well. I mean I'm going to put up a couple videos on top of it in my liked file for anyone to see on my channel and I'll tell you now this ranks right up there on top. You decide.
That's what you get for lovin' me That's what you get for lovin' me Everything you had is gone, as you can see That's what you get for lovin' me I ain't the kind to hang around With any new love that I've found Movin' is my stock in trade, I'm movin' on I won't think of you when I'm gone So don't you shed a tear for me I ain't the love you thought I'd be I've got a hundred more like you, so don't be blue I'll have a thousand 'fore I'm through Now there you go you're cryin' again Now there you go you're cryin' again But then someday when your poor heart is on the men I just might pass this way again That's what you get for lovin' me That's what you get for lovin' me Everything you had is gone, as you can see That's what you get for lovin' me
There is something fake here! Peter is pretending to play standup bass (which he normally does) on this acoustic guitar (watch his hands). And Paul indicates a change in chords at the very end of the song where there is no change. I'm both a bassist and a guitarist and I know, unless I've had too much to drink tonite!
This is about music... These are the only liberals I like. We certainly don't need your 2 cents worth. If I tried destroying my country like you I would HIDE!. TRAITOR...PP&M Were not traitors....you are!.
Victor, you sound like a cornball wearing a jockstrap and sandals. Trump supporters rule! "the rumbling you feel is the coming future. Stand aside! Trump & the Patriots are coming through"
Yeah sure, just like that bad hair having spoiled brat of an idiot denied that Covid 19 was a serious threat to the USA. Instead he did absolutely nothing and 600,000 + people in this country are in the ground now because of it. How can anybody still support the tyrant who destroyed our entire planet? Global warming a myth? Dotard! This worm of a man has almost single handedly accelerated human extinction ! Biden may be a pushover lame of a man, but at least he isn't deliberately causing chaos and all the while pretending like he is championing family values and virtues. UHhhhjj,! That makes me want to throw up !
RIP Gordon Lightfoot 1938-2023
Sad to mark the death of Gordon Lightfoot, who blessed us with so many heartfelt songs like this one.
It wasn't lightfoot killed him
It was big foot
it's sad if you want to make it sad. i choose to make happy remembering the good things

I believe there's an upright bass player somewhere off camera, but still...
They sang the same way in recording studios and better in Person
Not just you my friend 🧡
It's not just you. Talent, skill, and heart have been replaced with marketing, greed and flash.
@@HeartoftheDragonColo Last 5 seconds shows the bassist you are correct
Gordon Lightfoot was one of the greatest singer/songwriter of all time. His vocal and instrumental style are unmatched.
It's a testament to PP&M that their greatness still shines.
I just learned that Gordon Lightfoot composed this great song...and I am not really surprised as he was a genius. Such an amazing talent...🌹

Thanks for writing this, 🇨🇦 Gordon Lightfoot.
"Puff" always brings a tear to my eye.
One of the best versions to watch in honour Gordon Lightfoot.
An absolutely fabulous song about an absolutely not fabulous person. I liked it back in the 60s. (And in a month I'll still like it in my seventies.) :-)
They are just stunning! There should be music and groups like them today.
Ha! Real music is appreciated less and less. But, I agree. I go to a little coffeehouse by me on occasion and enjoy decent folk.
This performance is an absolute masterpiece. Full stop.
Agreed, totally. Excellent video too, and from the 1960s.
The fact that I can give only one like to this song is such a shame.
Thanks for this again
😊❤😢💔🌈🌉🙏✨️🥰❤️🕊

Indeed Okun knew how to bring out those voices and counterpoint their harmony I miss them.

Group, not band.
Indeed. I heard Mary Travers refer that P & P and the Bassist Dick Kiniss
“”My band Mates””. But a one of a kind group ✌️🎶

Never get tired of them. 💖💖💖💐
I saw them from their beginning and for 45 years they were as fine wine. Real Troubadours
Me either!!!!!! I loved them in the 60's, and never stopped, and never stop!!!!!!!!!
Love all their songs and this is one of the best. Brought tears to my eyes.

Best version, love guitar playing
Brings to mind my first love. . .the evil Maggie.
Wow... beautiful song😪

Bons tempos

Absolutely brilliant. I wish I could play finger style like Paul Stooky.
haunting and rich harmony by the Masters PP&M
Epic every single time I watch them together.
SO SMOOTH ❤️🎸
Amazing
P.p and msry.. great r.i.p
Mary
probably my favorite P P & M song .........also The Cruel war and Stewball
Everything they sang was just like a woven
Tapestry of incredible ensemble songs
Hey I like this cover! Didn't know it was a Gordon Lightfoot song, always thought it was Waylon Jennings's since that's the only version I've heard lol
The greatest

That's what you get for lovin' me
That's what you get for lovin' me
Everything you had is gone, as you can see
That's what you get for lovin' me
I ain't the kind to hang around
With any new love that I've found
Movin' is my stock in trade, I'm movin' on
I won't think of you when I'm gone
So don't you shed a tear for me
I ain't the love you thought I'd be
I've got a hundred more like you, so don't be blue
I'll have a thousand 'fore I'm through
Now there you go you're cryin' again
Now there you go you're cryin' again
But then someday when your poor heart is on the men
I just might pass this way again
That's what you get for lovin' me
That's what you get for lovin' me
Everything you had is gone, as you can see
That's what you get for lovin' me
Mary Travers was the quintessential "flower child".
Hard to replace
Sounds great!
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
great
For Lovin Me .......Abraços .. Brazil.
P.P.&Mary were so gifted that their cover often overtook the original
🎶🎵🎶🎶🎵🎵🎶♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼!!!!!!!!
Wish I could find the tabs for this online
Ah, l'inconvénient de jouer de la guitare entre deux personnes !... Le fichu manche ! 😉
The bass player never got any recognition
It may have been Danny Thompson. It would be nice if someone could confirm or not as the case may be.
During any PP&M concert I attended, they always introduced their bassist Richard Kniss.
I wonder why Mary never got her own microphone.....?
They shared two. Mary didn’t need one her voice from contralto to countertenor just could sustain
Of course, It’s you I’m thinking of.
Why am I crying (?)
Ugh....reminds me of some people out there

But it is live.
This is a concert they did with a half dozen songs. In many camera angles the bassist can be seen off to the side of the riser.
Yeah , Paul said that the Bass was taking away from the vocals.
Stalin's favorite group.

This song should only be sung by certain men.
Stalinists singing Gordon Lightfoot. Yay!
These are horrible people. They would send you to the Gulag without a second thought.
Wtf? 😂
what on earth are you talking about? It's a music group singing a song somebody else wrote
Wonderful Natural Talent Rare group with great counterpoint harmony.
These people are pure evil.
That was awesome
