      Generally speaking I just don’t keep fish that eat certain plants with those plants... ie anything soft and rooted with A cichlids. I have found that other other than floating plants, even fish that eat plants can be kept with some sort of plant under the right conditions. Sometimes I put dirt under an under gravel filter grate, top with gravel and don’t connect a pump to it). Pretty much anything will root in that enough for fish who love to dig if it has enough time to establish itself first. I also put terracotta plants in tanks with fish who like to uproot. I weigh them down with rocks so even the Oscars don’t flip them over. I have some lotus plants from my summer tubs in these with Oscars. No problem. However - when I have duckweed - I just put a few African cichlids on the job foe a few days and it’s gone.

      My Buenos Aires tetras like to chew on a select few of my plants, such as dwarf sag and jungle val. And before I had those they liked to eat on the amazon swords. But they stay away from most of the other plants which is good, they kind of choose their favorite to snack on. I thought the ferns were safe until they grew babies which the tetras liked!

      I have java fern and anacharis watched videos saying those plants r suppose to last with these fish because supposedly java fern tastes bad and nacharis grows so fast it doesn't bother it wich mine is doing good so far just got some cutting that are thriving but have nibbles and the tetra r eating the java fern like candy I've actually tried giving them zukinni and they nibbled but made the water look gross n they love algae wafers and can carry them whole, also have ladybug because I live in the country in the mountains and they eat n will fight over them and leave nothing left but the shell of the wings shredded latterly paranas and tried anubius they tried to eat the leaves and the roots and left shark looking bites in a mystery snails squishy bottom and was golf ball size and picked him up and I had to remove after 3 seconds

    I also have TONS of jungle Val in my 165 gallon with my two Oscars (and, incidentally a metric butt ton of endlers). I put a few endlers in there a few months ago by way of culling and I thought the Oscars would enjoy them as a snack. They are too small to be bothered with apparently. Now there is a thriving endler colony living right alongside the two fully grown Oscars. I wish I could attach a pic. It’s amazing

    As usual, very helpful! I have heard that goldfish can be kept with tough-leaved plants, but that they must be kept in some sort of "rock Planter" thing, or the goldfish will just dig them up. I do know of a person who had two artfully attached ponds (a waterfall between them) one with cleaning plants in it, and the other with goldfish---had the benefits of the plants, without the goldfish eating them. :0 I always thought that was a pretty cool idea.

    Im keeping mbuna cichlids in a densely planted tank (all from you!) of jungle val, hygro carymbosa, anubias, crypts, and some Java fern windelov. I've got turquoise Sevs in my 210 planted tank. They eat hair algae, and that's a big plus for a planted tank. They rip up any moss you actually took the effort to glue down just where you wanted it. But only nibble at my swords, and giant val occasionally. They won't touch my rotala, anubias, pothos or java fern. I'm still experimenting with what they won't eat.

    • @fishandfloral
      @fishandfloral 3 года назад +1

      My sevs don’t eat anubius, they just rip it apart leaf by leaf. Same with java fern. LOL I also have a banded leporinus with them who loves lettuce. I feed them veggies and toss in a handful of duckweed every few days. May as well use their herbivore appetite to control the duckweed in other tanks. 😆

    • @rh-we8ix
      @rh-we8ix 3 года назад

      I do supplement their diet with lots of greenery. Probably should have mentioned that. I give them different types of lettuce I couldn't justify spending the money on just for me ;) and the normally wasted greens from most root crops, save potatoes because they are full of solanine and extremely toxic. I only add that so someone doesn't try to feed it.
