  • Here's a simple jam featuring only the Korg NTS-1 synthesizer, using its surprisingly powerful arpeggiator.
    My music on Bandcamp: waveformer42.ba...
    There's no way to share NTS-1 patches yet, and not easy to read parameters settings, so this is the patch as far as I can remember. Oscillator type Triangle, Sweep rate 0.1. Filter type LP4, Resonance 0%, Rate 9Hz, Depth 50%. Modulator type Flanger, Time 25%. Depth 40%. Reverb type: Submarine, Time max, Depth 60%, Dry: 65%. Tremolo rate 0.2Hz, Tremolo depth 20%. Arpeggiator type d-C, Tempo 69 BPM, Pattern length 19, pattern type varies throughout the jam.
    During the jam, I play with filter cutoff, oscillator shape modulation, and switch the arpeggiator between octave, sus4, minor and minor diminished.
    The audio is recorded on a Korg KP2S and normalized in Audacity. Video is recorded on iPhoneX. Audio and video is synchronized in DaVinci Resolve 15.
    Gear:
    Korg NTS-1
    Korg Mini Kaoss Pad 2S (for recording)
    Connections:
    NTS-1 - KP2S (for recording)
    Misc:
    NTS-1 effects: Delay: Ping-Pong, delay time max, depth 60%, dry 25%, Reverb: Submarine, time max, depth 60%, dry 65%
    Tempo: 69 BPM
    Key: Cm

    Aaaaah, so that's how you change the chord type. I really should look these things up and not wait for videos to randomly reveal things. Nice little jam.

    This little sub-$100 synth really is amazing. Another RUclipsr, Oscillator Sink, has a nice video showcasing it as well. Great to have so many awesome examples to learn from! Keep up the great work, Waveformer!

    Thanks for sharing...It is quite a good demo of the abilities of the NTS-1...you have a way of bringing out the sounds in these small budget synths.

    Taking advantage of the small knob size to quickly adjust the filter on key notes of the arp is a creative way to play this instrument expressively. Really nice work, and very inspirational. You could also make thimble for playing the ribbon.

    New sub! It always amazes me how well-performed electronic music can repeat and reuse so much, yet over > 9 minutes it wasn't once repetitive. Nicely done.

    • @Waveformer
      @Waveformer  4 года назад +1

      bigbeatnut yeah, the NTS-1 is capable of some really nice sounds more or less right out of the box without much tweaking. Great effects!

    Great sound you're getting out of this little one!
    I'd love it if they add an option to send chords to the arpeggiator in a future upgrade.
    It's a bit limited being able to only use single notes.

    • @McTroyd
      @McTroyd 3 года назад

      The NTS-1 only has one voice. I've seen paraphonic add-on "oscillators" for the NTS-1, but so far as I know, this one won't ever have full polyphony. You'll need a minilogue XD or a prologue for that. They have 4-16 voices, depending on the model.

    • @_DRMR_
      @_DRMR_ 3 года назад +1

      @@McTroyd I mean for the arpeggiator. So that you can run over a sequence of notes instead of just the one key. Not poly/paraphony.
      You can probably simulate some minimal paraphony in the dsp, but you need poly-note midi first for either of these suggested extensions. Also things like glide and note priority.

    • @McTroyd
      @McTroyd 3 года назад

      @@_DRMR_ Aahhh OK. Apologies for the misunderstanding. It might be possible now, over MIDI -- I haven't looked at the chart yet.

    This reminded me a lot of se very old and very beautiful JMJ recordings. The reverb is astounding and the chord progressions you used are cery well chosen. It sounds like an NTS-1 would be a great addition to my set-up. How well foes it play with others? Does it send MIDI, or only receive? Can the arpeggiator be controlled externally?

    • @Waveformer
      @Waveformer  2 года назад +1

      It doesn’t send MIDI, but it receives MIDI, and you can control the arpeggiator by sending notes from an external MIDI keyboard.

    • @telantas

      @@Waveformer That's cool, thanks for taking the time to answer. I have a Crave that sometes I use for arpeggios but I'd like to keep it free for bass or lead duties, maybe I could cstch an NTS-1 for that purpose.
