It's a rare state of consciousness for most people where the part of your brain that separates the frontal cortex from the rest of itself during sleep doesn't operate properly, so basically your body falls asleep (and thus can't move) but your brain doesn't. Most of the time people affected by it start hallucinating because a part of the brain is asleep and the other isn't, so they just think it's a weird dream, but you're actually conscious.
