You just helped save me over $1500 with confidence, by piping my own pool renovation. I am pressure testing before I burry any of the circuits, too. Gluing pipes together may seem child’s play to some. However, without a doubt there are many mastery techniques and reasons to hire a plumber if there is hesitation. You've shared critical trade knowledge and that is something just not easily found in a book. Thanks again Brother and I wish more of us could share like this!
Awesome. Thanks. I heard a loud bang last night, looked under my house and gushing water. This morning, after turning the water off last night, noticed a pipe came out of a joint. Looks new, probably was repaired during our last snow storm. I think this weekends snow storm, I live in ga, must have loosened it when my pipes froze. Now, I will try to fix it myself. Fingers crossed a prissy girl can save some money.
"Who's your Daddy" Thanks, the methods are actual approved methods not just wives tales past from one guy to another. I hope to improve everyones day with best possible methods. The repairs I have done to others work have driven me to this video. I took my first training in PVC joining in early 70's and nothing has changed except the price of PVC. It is all just chemistry.
Unions are couplings that connect two pipes. But instead of being one piece, they are 3 separate parts, the sockets are two different parts, the third part spins them together with out needing to twist the valve or the pipe. Your problem has been in existence since pipe threads have existed. A union is the coupler for threaded connections. Slip sockets and female threaded sockets are options in union configurations. Use a union they are sold where couplings are sold.
The term "Glue" is used for solvent cementing and often people think that the "glue" will stick if sanded, the melting of plastic and cooling of plastic cares not is surface is sanded, in fact the tolerance of the fit is factory perfect with out sanding. The actual ASTM, UPC, etc. methods prohibit sanding and the installer is only needed to use pipe cleaner. No, not primer, but cleaner if the pipe is dirty. The primer heats up the plastic so the solvent process begins when primer is used.
Greg, can you make a video on how to connect the last joint on a pvc job? all is well and good for me until I get to that part which you cant twist insert and often short the joint.
After hours researching what I was doing wrong, i found this video. Pretty sure I was putting glue too far inti socket and turning too much. Going to replace 2 couplings in the morning. Thanks!
How old are the pipes? are they Schedule 40 ? marked PVC ? Is the pipe exact size ? are you dealing with draining back water? is the temp below 40 F.? What is the pressure of the water when on and at rest?
If good valves are used and installed correctly why would a valve need replacing? Water pressure can ruin valves, what is the pressure? Full socket depth is necessary, as well as a slight twist while inserting. Chamfering (beveled edge) is needed as well, no sanding. Sun can damage the plastic if full exposure in very hot climates.
Like I have said we are all in this together. I hope to do a video on a spray solvent (glue) for PVC joining. A company has come out with a spray PVC glue and it works ok but the best part is the shelf life. The time it sits in your tool box and still useable. I use the mfgr. recommended methodology not my opinion nor wives tales nor simply what the guy who showed me in a trench.
Sanding PVC Pipe is the most popular fantasy, thinking the glue needs a good surface to bond to. It is not Glue! it is Solvent, it melts the plastic. Most popular error is not chamfering the edge before insertion, causing softened plastic to be pushed to end of socket where is is not useable. Yes fights on const. sites have been fought over the mythical father to son methods of "Glueing PVC" PVC Pipe is not patio furniture, the sun kills it!. you got me going Klepto.....
excuse me, i got pvc solvent cement and pvc pipe cement for re connecting my blue pvc pipes because it keeps disconnecting, i dont know what lacks in my method but im sure ive done everything but the cone to soften the ends same area disconnects, for every disconnect, i smoot'n the inside part of the joint and cut the old part of the blue pvc pipe, but i keep on doing this method and i think im oblique to buy extention of my pvc pipe from the cuts i made any other way to bind two joints?
Mr. Gray, Thanks, read some blogs at my other site is you want some Plumber, customer,Water, social commentary... Put your own as a reply if you like. I allow all postings that are just four letter words...
That is interesting. Here in Thailand, almost all residential home piping is PVC. We don't use primer just standard solvent cement. In fact i don't think i have ever seen PVC primer in Thailand. We hardly have any problems. Maybe, It has to do with the temperature. There is not much difference in temperature between summer and winter. I'm not so sure anyway.
@Klepto233651 I think Joining PVC has been like a story told over time, it changes. People have added things and left things out and wa la, it's wrong. I use the Original and still prominent Solvent Mfgr. procedures as listed in third party listing agency. (facts) not my opinion. I will admit, it is my opinion that facts are better than fiction. I do have fantasies, but they don't include Solvents. Seriously, yours Greg
Do not sand the pipe, this is expressly wrong to do as per pipe, and solvent mfgrs. and Code. The cone is just for the bevel of blunt end. I have used the concrete sidewalk in a circle at a 45 deg. angle.
Chamfer. "Ch"..sound is SHAM. Shamfer; NOT Camfer! So the bevel shape is pronounced "Shamfer". The best of British English! :) Otherwise, a great lesson!

I was mis pronouncing it, you are correct, thanks for your attention to details...

Very informative video for an amateur like me. Nice job!

Unions are not just labor organizations, they are fittings to make life better.
thank you for this great do it yourself info.
A bloody good video! Super Useful!
Great informative video!
Very useful. Well done.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge!

Gracias por la información...saludos de perú.

Doing it right is the only way to be proud.

Opps, I just lightly sanded the blunt ends. I finished the project with no leaks in all of the 560ft of pipe. Thanks for the advice though.
thank you

you got me going Klepto.....
VERY helpful!
Thanks!
If you don't have a cone, can you use sand paper? I'm doing 500ft of pvc from a water main.
Anyone know where to buy the pvc cutter cone shown in this vid?
Thank you for watching We all need to know more
Thank you.
@jsblgb65
You mean the letter C is soft ? Like chamois?... thanks I strive to be detail correct!
Thank you for the tutorial, much obliged! :D
That is the function of the valve working! you have heads above the valve and that is the water venting out.
What is getting done and how?

cool video... only thing that's bugging me is the lack of the "ch" sound in the word chamfer...
@nic190
That is what it is there for!
Kum,buy Ya, Namaste etc.
thank you...

Unions, they are made for this.
We provide complete pipes & plastic joining, sealing repairing solution for pvc pipe, plastic item and specialized tape.

I just want people to save water and do a "best job" possible.
