Grabbed a broken "ear" laying beside the plants at Lowes, stuck it soil and its finally growing roots! Has a little baby on top too! Took almost 2 months to see growth, and like you said, super easy to do!

Elmers glue is a miracle for glochids stuck in skin. I keep a bottle around just for this plant! Just put a thin layer, let it dry, peel off.

It needs more sun Summer, those youngest pads are etiolated...
Tips for getting out glochids - drag sticky tape across the affected area.... next method - spread PVA glue over the area, peel off when dry.... last method - good tweezers and a sharp eye! (and a magnifier?)

Hey Karsten, I have an etiolated pad which started growing about 3 weeks ago... its about 2cm now. Shall I just pull it off now before it gets really long? I've moved it to a sunnier spot now too. Thanks

I just got stickered after accidentally brushing past it. I used duct tape. And for the hairs left behind, I used a pair of those tweezers that you use to remove blackheads. They have a nice pointy curved and skinny tip

Opuntia microdasys are the easiest and probably the itchiest cactus I've ever taken care of (those glochids!). They need more light so the pads will grow rounder and thicker.

Mine are stuck on the south facing window that has no blinds, and they're gorgeous. Don't know how often I water them but they're so fluffy and round. I wish I could hug it but alas, I cannot

Mine grow throughout the winter as well as the summer! I only had mine for approximately a year and it is as taller than your's, but not as bushy. I got it off of a neighbor who had it neglected in a coffee mug(I repotted it) somewhere that didn't get any light. It was on death's door and tiny. Now it is a monster. I propagate it once I notice a piece has detached itself from the plant. I'll use the loosened pieces to make more.

I call my microdasys the 'Tarantula', as it seems to fire off those glochids whenever I go near it. I only have to pick up a pot carefully, and I find I have imbedded glochids between my fingers. I have several pots of it and self rooted ones all over my mini (cold) greenhouse, and they survive Northern hemisphere Winters here in London.

This species can be EXTREMELY DANGEROUS. I work in a university greenhouse around deadly poisionous plants all day, but this is the only one that scares me... I was told that this species will shoot spines, which i didn't really believe until I witnessed, only yesterday, this apparent phenomenon. There is a danger of inhalation or them getting into your eyes. Anyway, I had to move the pot. I gently poked the cactus with a stick to see how much it took to shoot the spines but nothing happened, so I carefully moved the pot and when I did, a section of 3 large pads fell off. When I picked up that section with tweezers, I suddenly noticed a bunch of spines floating in the air. What I think actually happened was just that the spines fell off en masse and since they are so small and light, they can float some distance on air currents, giving the impression that they were discharged with some force. Either way, they are very small, light, and there is a danger of getting them in your eyes or inhaling them, and if you have this species, you should not have pets and should probably keep it..at least over a large sheet of plastic, away from fans, and you should only handle it with a proper mask and goggles, having first put a bag around it in case this happens or they could end up all over your house, in the carpet, curtains, etc.. I had a few in my clothes.

  • @Heliosphan33

The cactus in the video has very elongated pads which show that it isn’t getting enough light and the pot is far too small. These can grow very big. They love to cook under the sun and they love room to spread out. The more space and soil you can afford, the better. You can water them every week in the summer if it’s doesn’t rain. Small cacti will need more water in hot weather but once they become more established they can stand the heat better. They really love to be watered after they’ve been through a hot spell and the soil is very dry.
