Man I'm working in an old estate in Ireland I used to do what you're doing and it's hard going.
I now look after Victorian walled gardens and it's heavenly, we have a nursery for the wet day's inside Polly tunnels and they're heated and air conditioning. Also a workshop for repairing and maintaining tools etc
It's hard going as a self employed gardener in Ireland

Here in Stoke-on-Trent it's relentless, the lawns are saturated. I have a thriving business with soon to be 7 of us but I've had to take part time employed work as I can't afford to lose pay all the time. Very hard for us gardeners. I totally hear you.

Its been a tough few months with the weather, getting slowly worse and worse, they say its the wettest 18 months on record. I hear this song up and down the country, its stressful. luckily we have not lost any days, but we have lost a couple of jobs, we started our main cutting season at the beginning of march last year. this year we are on our second rotation, constantly having to message customers telling them we are having to postpone until it drys out a bit. a few lawns we do are like swamps or lakes, and just can not be cut. its awful.

I'm having a nightmare with the weather down here in Dundee Scotland too mate, just need to do what you can when you can. Thankfully, most of our customers are understanding. As you say a bit of rains ok but when its thumping down like it has been there isnt much you can do. Hopefully it will get better soon its been really bad for us since Sept last year, dont even want to think of the amount of hours/days we'v lost 😑

I feel your pain Adam , I’m based in Lancashire and just about managed to get through all my fortnightly grass cuts last week.
Trouble is once you get behind you’re constantly trying to play catch up 🤷‍♂️.
Like yourself there are certain lawns that just don’t drain so consequently you end up making a mess if you’re not careful.
Just keep on doing what you can. The weather will improve ( like it always does) … we will forget about the rubbish start when we are still cutting grass in November 😂

I used to work with landscaper's and had enough, I got a job as a gardener in the tourism industry looking after walled gardens and we have a nursery for the wet days.
I wouldn't make as much money as I would doing private work, but I have a consistent wage and HR look after all the other situations and if we need tools and plants compost etc it doesn't come out of our pockets
I've a degree in horticulture and adaptable, but nothing beats comfort and knowing that at the end of the working week ill be paid and don't have to tolerate bad weather 👍👍👍

You have to get on with it, decent brethable waterproofs and good machinery with sharp blades.
A lot of my properties are holiday lets and these have to be done weekly on changeover and fortnightly in the winter. No luxury of swaping days so they get done regardless.
I'm cutting with tractor mowers and ocasinaly i will leave wheel marks were water is forced up but this disapears literally after the next shower of rain, i never have any complaints from either the owners or guests only compliments.
I honestly think a lot of the time it comes down to mindset and not wanting to get wet rather than if the job can actually be done.

  • @neilhatton6018

For me it’s the filthy mess your tools and van get into which irks me. The God awful mess of the underneath of the mower, you get it all nice and with it raining you’re scooping out thick clods of grass, it is bloody depressing 😂 I almost don’t mind a little light rain, but it depends on the jobs you’re doing. But whatever the job one thing is guaranteed the tidying up on a job takes ten times as long, that is what frustrates, esp when you’ve got other places to be, when it’s bone dry you can get cleared up but as soon as it’s wet forget it

    • @TheGreyGardener1990

    • @neilhatton6018
      @neilhatton6018 5 месяцев назад

@TheGreyGardener1990 I don't need spotless tools.. but from experience when it's wet and you don't clean the mower deck you leave it a day or two or more and it's just a nightmare, so you're better cleaning everytime, but that's a pain and not always practical depending on where you are.. when it's dry and you're mowing nice sunshine you don't even need to clean it every time you can just mow and go

Nature of the business unfortunately, up here in Scotland we've lost the first 2 weeks of our schedule, meant to be starting again tomorrow and the forecast is looking "ok" but that can, and likely will, change at the drop of a hat. We will cut in the rain, but you just can't if it's that bad, the machines will just clog up or worse still, you'll simply start messing up the lawns with the weight of the machines, just have to wait until it's possible. Last season we even went out over the weekends and would be doing a full weeks schedule in 2 days to try and keep up with the damn thing!

It’s awful down here in Herefordshire. Feels like it’s been raining constantly since July except for a couple of nice weeks in September and October. Some of clients gardens (and my own) are actually going underwater. Lost so much work this year and I’m behind where I wanted to be financially. Won’t be able to invest in new equipment that I need or start saving for my winter fund yet. It will change at some point but when?
