Recently started listening to U.K Rap and Grime a while ago and to see Stormzy getting recognition here in the U.S makes me really happy as a fan of music
He is trying to speak in a way that Americans will understand. If he started speaking normally with London slang, Americans would not get a thing. Just look at most American reactions when they hear UK tunes with deep UK accent, it all goes over their head so painfully that its hilarious.
Hernanday fam stop giving credit to where it doesn’t belong, he doesn’t care about grime he wants more press for his upcoming album, nothing clever about it
As in Irish person , hearing Stormzy talk about the commonwealth so honestly made me respect the man even more . Fair play . Serious respect for him . He’s representing the real and decent people in the UK well
If you are confused by the way he talks, just know that he speaks with a ghetto London accent which was influenced by many cultures, English cockney, Jamaican patois, standard English and West African dialects. On top of that you may hear a few Arabic & Somalian words and phrases.
lol how is everyone mad at him not finishing his sentences, take what he is saying, understand he is manoeuvring the conversation, not focused on proving a point, its enigmatic also

And we're such a tiny island compared to the USA.... How can we expect them to get our life /coulture/slang. Like when them mentioned top boy. That's literally what life is like where I'm from. It's like everyone thinks its all tea, biscuits and crumpets over here lol! Maybe in the posh parts. But defo not the majority of Londoner's.... Top boy actually has a lot of good UK references that would prob help explain a few UK cultural differences, help understand the slang in context ect! But, big up yourself for listening to grime, all the way from across the pond! It's soooo undiscovered over there! 😎
A breath of Fresh Air I love this interview cos Stormzy is so REAL to me as a Londoner from da Endz living in New York, Bruv I've been trying to explain to our American brothers British Street Culture but could never articulate it well!! I've always get the Tea and Crumpets Jokes, they truly don't understand but are learning
Stormzy is articulate in his music... When he's being interviewed he's more aware of his words and is trying not to swear. H.I.T.H...Plus this is an American interview...he has to dumb down for this audience. These guys don't give him the chance to explain himself... Like when C.T.G interviewed Anthony Joshua...This seems like an interrogation , not an interview
Hot 97/Ebro is notorious for doing this with foreign and "newer" artists that are breaking mainstream in the U.S. It is really aggrevating to watch/listen to sometimes.
As an American I can say I understand his raps far better than this interview that he supposedly needs to 'dumb down'. An actual rapper that can't talk is something I have never seen before, the trash ones sure but he isn't trash. Which leaves me wondering, outside of your racism, if he is understandable in UK interviews?
@@absolutebollocks2258 You saying 'dumbing it down' for Amercian's isn't racism? Or you think he somehow meant that street lingo in the UK is so advanced that it needs to be 'dumbed down' to be understood by us?

The thing about grime artists now and grime elders is that there’s not that much of a generational gap but so much has happened success wise. It’s evolved very quickly whilst still holding very dearly onto the roots. So new school grime artists like Stormzy will get a lot of pushback and ‘hate’ from some of the old school grime heads because they were expecting him to carry on the genre in its purest form, like when he did the song ‘Shut Up’. That was a pure grime song and just like overly pushy but proud stage dads, the grime elders were hoping he would carry on the genre as THEY once created it. Once Stormzy became his own man and evolved from grime and added other sounds to his sound- that’s when beef starts. Hip hop has gone through the same thing also but it’s sooo big now. So I wouldn’t expect for a new hip hop artist to get push back from old hip hop heads anymore.
Lies. Ugly negative people will always find a reason to beef. Wiley is one of those people. If they cared so much for grime they would carry on as grime artists and be great at what they do and make grime big. Even drill is now bigger than grime because it sounds better. The truth is, they are grime pioneers but not very good artists and Stormzy just proved it by destroying Wiley who has been doing grime for years but couldn't even put together a compelling grime record in this beef.
Lovely young man. People hate on him because he thinks outside the box and is willing to be diverse. This way you stay relevant and earn money long term. Young people, and even older ones 'in the game', watch and learn. Humility, integrity and honesty. Much respect to Stormzy 🖤
Yvonne Shelton not saying he wouldn’t. He’s said that himself recently on the Hot 97 interview. But when a man comes at you, you gotta represent. It’s not like Wiley’s his dad. Then old school type clashing bars I grew up with don’t wash no more. Gotta be more direct. And Stormzy was just that. Wiley lost.
Rajiv Patel Wiley is not better than them all but he fathered them all. Of course the next generation takes the crown by default after they’ve stood on the shoulders of the pioneers standard stuff really

Credit to Stormzy, he always keeps it raw, honest and relatable. Fantastic interview and credit to Hot 97 for asking the questions and the insight from their points of view too!
Ebro seems like he thinks the only country in the Caribbean is Jamaica 😂😂

He is trying to speak in a way that Americans will understand. If he started speaking normally with London slang, Americans would not get a thing. Just look at most American reactions when they hear UK tunes with deep UK accent, it all goes over their head so painfully that its hilarious.

for our American friends "like" in between sentences means "buffering" or for mac users "rainbow ball of death"

@@cesheph haha Americans really don't understand our slang, for some reason! But the dictionary is a great idea💡👍🏻👌🏼 because every other word in grime is some kind of slang or UK reference. And we're such a tiny island compared to the USA.... How can we expect them to get our life /coulture/slang. Like when them mentioned top boy. That's literally what life is like where I'm from.

Beede Bawng 😂That’s what I said but in a nicer more bedazzled way tho...
