- This video documents the restoration of my recently acquired Apple-1 computer motherboard. I have been a collector of vintage Apple computers since the mid 1990's, and I have always wanted to include an Apple-1 in my collection. Due to the rarity and cost of an Apple-1, it took me more than 20 years to make it happen.
I don't intend to hoard this Apple-1 as some sort of trophy in my office. My wife and I are keen to find a suitable museum or other public venue where this Apple-1 can be put on display and available to anyone to appreciate. We live in Dubai and would prefer to keep it in the country so that we can also visit it from time-to-time.
At the end of the video you'll see some photos of the Apple-1 components and replicas that I own. It is because of them that my colleagues and I had the experience and confidence to undertake this restoration. A lot of things could have gone wrong, but thankfully we were successful in getting this computer running again after nearly 40 years in storage.
The previous owner of this Apple-1 has chosen to remain anonymous. This Apple-1 spent the last 40 years in Germany, and prior to that belonged to the original buyer in Rochester NY for a year or two. It's settling in nicely to its new home, Dubai, and I can't wait for all the Apple & tech fans in the region to get to see and enjoy it now that it's fully functional.

Awesome episode! You helped to preserve an extremely rare piece of iconic computer history. This has a cool factor with a capital C! Thanks so much for posting this.
Thanks for making this video with an original Apple-1! I would imagine most people who have original Apple-1 computers may not be willing or interesting in making a video and sharing like this. Thanks again!
Impressive. The Apple 1 truely is the one of first computers to start the personal computer era. It's almost an alpha version of the Apple II series. I still have my original Apple II+ that I bought for $2500 back in 1980. It was the coolest thing I had ever seen. I estimate I spent 4-5 hours per day for over two years programming with it.
The Apple ][+ was also my first computer (bought second hand by my parents in 1982) and I too felt it was the coolest thing I had ever seen.
Something about this just feels amazing. It's like, the next closest thing to time travel.
Awesome comment with amazing accuracy. It really is like going back into time by admiring this amazing piece of iconic computer history.
Excellent job, thanks for sharing.
Congrats Jimmy, what a great adventure and piece of computing history!
The golden era...
I like that You did not do more than what realy where nessesary with it, beside just cleaning it up and check everything with proper equipment.
There are way to many people out there wich just rip ewerything out without any real sense of how to properly preserve those pieces of our modern history.
Vampira thanks! My goal is to keep it as original as possible. So far that’s been easy. The dilemma will come when some component fails and I have to decide if keeping it 100% original is more than keeping it operational.
@@JimmyGrewal Exactly, I think You found a very good balance, and showed how to do a proper job with actual understanding and the correct way to preform a serious analyzis in order to proceed with the correct desicions.
Fantastic video! I love that you’re wearing an Apple Watch and loading up BASIC from an iPad. Thanks for sharing this!
Fantastic. Amazing stuff. And a very clear, understandable video.
Wow you are one of seven people who have a working apple one! So jealous
Very jealous and congratulations on the fantastic job restoring this piece of history.
The ironic thing is the Ipad next to it is so much more powerful yet much smaller and elegant. Technology has come a long way, I still remember the floppy disc days.
Thank you so much for keeping our computing history alive. This video brought tears to my eyes; funny how the many other videos with replicas and such didn't have that effect on me. It really does matter when it's the original.
Good job Jimmy! It is great to see a working legend restored to life.
I can just imagine Woz watching this and yelling at the screen "It's the RAM sockets!"
This is quite wonderful.A piece of history.
Good Work.. At the end I thought you are going to show Steve.. But it was woz.. That was cool.
thank you for perserving this peice of history.;:) eggscllent job.
You really saved it! Nicely done mate! 👍🏼
Amazing!
At 8:50 is there another Apple I lying on the table in the back? Replica?
DaNDeE cAHOONAh replica (Mimeo-1)
Great video......it is very cool to see the system that started it all for Apple... I don’t take any of my macs for granted... thanks for sharing good job especially all the cleaning it took
So cool! 👍
You must of did very nicely on the price if everyone thought that was corrosion? :)
Must have must have must have must have must have
I paid below market but it was still A LOT of money. Need to find a cheaper hobby.
@@JimmyGrewalIt took a lot of courage for you to have heavily invested in such a worthwhile, albeit risky, undertaking. Standing ovation from Chicago for your preservation of such an important piece of iconic computer history.
It’s beautiful I’m a 14yo apple collector biggest dream on having one of these obviously just seeing it would be a dream come true what did you do with the apple I?
cool
can it run GTA V 60fps in 4k?
Beavis i wish.
Wow
Great video. Congratulations for the Apple 1.
I have been following you on social media since some time now due to your interest in latest technologies. If its okay can you please tell me how can I get in contact with you? I would like to work in your company if there is a chance.
Thanks! We don’t have many job openings at the moment as far as I know, but you can apply online and I’ll follow up:

Jimmy Grewal thank you very much. Have applied online if anything comes up please let me know, I don’t mind even if its not exactly related to my education background. Also I stay very near to your new upcoming office in Navi Mumbai.
@@ameermukadam Did you ever get job working at elcome? Just curious
Neal Noble unfortunately no. The chances where pretty slim anyways
The real question is... can it run Flappy Mac?
is that the original screen?
Yel D The Apple-1 was sold be Apple without a display, keyboard, or power supply. Some dealers bundled these items along with handmade wooden cases. The display in the video was a common one that buyers of the Apple-1 and early Apple ][ computers would purchase.
@@JimmyGrewal I'm reading his biography right now and read that it indeed came without those supplies so I was a bit confused, thank you for clearing that up!
No Brasil se o governo descobrir que alguem tem um a receita federal bate na porta para tomar por causa do valor .
Is the first APPLE 1 4kb ram manufactured in MALAYSIA?
Azarul Ashraf the 8kb RAM in my Apple-1 was manufactured in Malaysia in August 1976.
how much worth this computer now?
There was one in the well known wooden case that went for $1 Million in auction, so who knows.
You can build one yourself, basically its 6502 chip + some 74-series logic chips
@@vyorkin Video hardware is very weird.
There was recently a private sale of one, said to be at least 1.3, possibly 1.5 or 6 million dollars. There's a website, the Apple I registry, which has over 90, and four have been confirmed as destroyed.
For Boyz from M$ was boring tinking with ms-dos and ibm xt...
What keyboard you used?
Vadim Gaming its the keyboard from the Apple ][+ as the Apple-1 requires an ASCII keyboard. The keyboard was manufactured for Apple by Datanetics.
@@JimmyGrewal thx
There's a second one in the background!
William Steele that’s one of the replicas we built to help us prepare.
This video is almost a year old and no one suggested sending the computer to the 8-Bit Guy. LOL
He doesnt appreciate it enough and he got MORE THAN ENOUGH donations... There are loads and loads of small collectors that do not have opportunity and money that he has to spend on their hobby
@@geisthub4752 Oh yeah. He would appreciate it nowadays.
you live in Dubai and dont have pocket change for this old motherboard? And I thought I am doing bad.
Stefan Egger Not sure I understand your point
Its a joke, because it's an Apple One. The last one sold for between 1.3-1.6 million dollars. Compared to an average 30+ year old motherboard... Its not a very good joke, but its an attempt at a joke.
Great!
TOUCH OF GREY
Lyrics By: Robert Hunter
Music By: Jerry Garcia
It must be getting early
Clocks are running late
Paint by numbers morning sky
Looks so phony
Dawn is breaking everywhere
Light a candle, curse the glare
Draw the curtains, I don't care
'Cause it's alright
I will get by
I will get by
I will get by
I will survive
I see you got your list out
Say your piece and get out (note 1)
Yes I got the gist of it
But it's alright
Sorry that you feel that way
The only thing there is to say
Every silver lining's got a
Touch of grey
It's a lesson to me
The Ables and the Bakers and the C's
The A B C's
We all must face
And try to keep a little grace
I know the rent is in arrears
The dog has not been fed in years
It's even worse than it appears
But it's alright
Cows are giving kerosene
The kid can't read at seventeen
The words he knows are all obscene
But it's alright
I will get by
I will get by
I will get by
I will survive
It's a lesson to me
The Deltas and the East and the Freeze
The A B C's
We all think of
And try to keep a little love
The shoe is on the hand it fits
There's really nothing much to it
Whistle through your teeth and split
'Cause it's alright
Oh well a touch of grey
Kind of suits you anyway
That was all I had to say
And it's alright
I will get by
I will get by
I will get by
I will survive
We will get by
We will get by
We will get by
We will survive
(1) the original lyrics were "Say your piece and piss off" but Hunter said that Jerry wanted him to change "piss off" to "get out" to give it a better chance at airplay (quoted by Bob Clinton in 'The Deadhead's Taping Companion Vol 2'). But it seems Jerry sang the original lyrics anyway on at least one occasion (eg 18 March 1992 - thanks to Doug Reddick for this).

very very nice... and a great story :D i like it...
Sure, this they get working and it was made before I was born, but my 1st gen iPad is a paper weight due to planned obsolescence. Can't install this version of an app because you need the newest iOS. Can't get the new iOS because my iPad is "no longer supported."
That applies to every computer ever. Newer versions of software require newer operating systems.
Kael I understand that, however, my comment was more of a jab at Apple. I have an Android tablet that is older than my 1st gen iPad and it still works great. Yes, it has an older os but I am still able to install apps which makes it usable. Not everyone needs the newest os or products. It would be nice if Apple would still allow the use of older versions of the apps I was referring to rather than try to force you to purchase the newest product.
I see your point, but sometimes new apps require new APIs which are not present in an older operating systems.
I came for a restoration, not a history lesson.
Daniel Powers we didn’t really have to do much restoration other than cleaning a few DRAM IC legs and the board itself
I came for polite comments.
