      Bro usually /dev/sda is going to be your main hard drive - that is the one in use at the moment.
      In the video I used /dev/sdb
      That's why I show you the fdisk -l command so you can properly identify which one is your usb.
      Ya probably dont want to format your hard drive lol

    I noticed that when I opened the file explorer after this setup, the free space under the /home/Desktop, for instance, was of only 3.8 GiB not equivalent of the 32 GiB encrypted persistence partition that I have created. Should my home environment not have 32 GiB of free space? Thanks for the help in advance!

    Are persistent USB drives reformatable , or persistent means it can't be wiped clean to normal ?

    • @HUEMOB
      @HUEMOB Год назад +1

      Yes it is reformat-able however if it’s encrypted you will need the password. This usb live boot is basically like doing a fresh os install every time you boot. So anything you install or save will be wiped when you shut down. Persistence drive is a partition of the usb that is separated and isn’t wiped when you shut down. It persists after shutdown and restart. So that way you can save some things on the persistence and they won’t be lost at shutdown. We encrypt it so that it’s secure since it won’t be wiped. But otherwise it’s the same as any other drive.
      Edit:you might be able to wipe and format the drive without the password I’m not sure

      That's the reason why I showed the fdisk -l part, so you could properly determine what is the right disk to encrypt.
      Anyway, it is fixable.
      You can decrypt the content using luksOpen command!
      1) Boot from a live USB like Kali Linux
      2) Decrypt into a location:
      sudo cryptsetup luksOpen /dev/sdX /location
      Make sure sdX is the encrypted drive and that /location is a valid location using fdisk -l . It could be /mnt/decrypt for example (just create a folder if not there)
      3) Once it decrypts, you should backup whatever files are most important to you right away.
      4) Follow the directions from this answer:
      unix.stackexchange.com/a/606231

    I did exactly all the steps but for some reason, i face the issue Device /dev/sdb2 is in use. Cannot proceed with format operation
    Command failed with code =1 (wrong or missing parameters) because the sdb2 persistence partition created by RUFUS is auto mount after run the live boot.. and the live boot is working like the persistence boot option... i tried to umount /dev/sdb2 from gparted software but this get face the same issue.. /dev/sdb2 is in use.. i really don't know how yours work just fine and doesn't auto boot and mount the auto created persistence partition! i face the same problem before years with RUFUS and the only way to make it work was to just write kali image on my usb and then boot to live and create a partition by my own and run the steps after! no time for this now man, any opinion that could work? I umount sdb2 hows is possible to be in use?

    • @CodeOnBy
      @CodeOnBy  2 года назад +2

      I was checking the comments and see some people had a similar issue while other didn't.
      What seems to have worked for some people:
      1) Boot using live encrypted persistence and create the luks container
      2) "had the same problem, deleted the partition with parted, rebooted, created the partition again and it worked."
      In any case, I'll create a new live encrypted USB with latest Kali and make a new vid to see if I run into the same issue some people are having.
