A Snowy First Ride on the Husqvarna Norden 901: First Impressions On and Off Road

  • The weather may be terrible, but I can't wait to get out for a Husqvarna Norden 901 first ride. I bought this thing to go off road, so I set out to do some Husqvarna Norden 901 off road riding on my first longer adventure with the bike. It turned out to be an even more exciting adventure than I had imagined because I very quickly got into some snowy conditions in the woods. This was a great opportunity to truly test out the Norden 901's capabilities, including all the traction control modes and other features, in less than ideal conditions.
    This Husqvarna Norden 901 first ride was a very good way to start out on the Norden 901 adventure bike. I had a good chance to ride it both on and off the road and give my first impressions of how the Norden 901 handles on the highway, on the city streets, on paved unmaintained roads, gravel roads, through the mud, and yes I even got the Norden 901 in the snow, though admittedly that didn't last long. I'm not a huge fan of the Norden 901 stock tires so I didn't venture much further after nearly dropping the bike in the snow like 200 feet up a gravel road.
    All in all, my first impressions of the Norden 901 are overwhelmingly positive, and this on and off road test ride basically confirmed everything I thought I already knew about the bike. It is unfortunate, though, that I seem to have developed a radiator hose leak already. This is one of the common Norden 901 issues, but it's still disappointing to have something wrong with such a new adventure motorcycle.

    I’m with you on/and about KTM/Husqvarna. I’ve been on Japanese bikes 48 years and in all of my bikes I’ve only had 10 or so European bikes. They definitely take some getting used to them, not that there a bad bike just different then what you’re used to riding. The new Husqvarna/KTM has A way different felling then the older ones do. They have there good and bad points just like the Japanese bikes. I’m loving mine so far and no problem yet. Thanks for sharing my friend.

    Bro, I just moved from upstate NY to coastal South Carolina. This weather gives me flashbacks of that awful upstate NY existence. Since we’ve been here (feb 1st) we’ve had maybe 5 days of rain and overcast. Every other day the sky has been blue and the sun is shining. It changes the way you think. You become happier. Strongly recommend getting the efff out of there if you have any desire. Greatest move I’ve ever made.

    My 790 got a coolant leak from the cold weather ride (I bought it in January) and it was fixed free under warranty. The issue was a cracked thermostat housing from extreme cold. I have had another coolant leak at the end of the TAT (I think I really stressed the cooling system towards the end) but it was just a hose clamp that needed to be tightened a bit. It does suck that it was an issue at all.
    I can say I have not had any engine troubles. Just do the maintenance and you shouldn't have issues. The T7 will obviously be more reliable in general though. The MT07 engine is the most reliable motorcycle engine ever built.
    I say this with over 17,000 miles on my 2020 model 790. You can choose performance and tech, or hyper reliability. That is just kinda how it goes unfortunately. That said the KTM isn't UN-reliable. It just isn't as reliable as the T7.

      @@justsomedude445 I'd love to agree with you. But, I feel like dealer prep services would include torquing fasteners.. but, another fella said his thermostat housing actually broke. Sure, plastic + cold equals uh-oh. But, on a 20k bike, there's still little excuse for the problem at hand. Sorry if you feel that you must defend a product with issues, and a small dealer network that doesn't demand the issues be resolved by the manufacturer. If I was gonna buy a KTM, or Husqvarna, I'd actually buy an SWM and have a 6-7k KTM powered bike that won't infuriate me with stupid maintenance intervals, and subsequent issues. Because, it's way less expensive.

    Wow, what a first ride! First and foremost: I am very glad you were sensible enough to know when to call it a day; you seemed preoccupied with potential bike damage, but I was starting to get worried about you!
    Second: That's such a shame the hoses weren't properly attached, especially on such an expensive bike. I've have yet to buy bike that cost even half that much, but I'd expect a certain level of quality at that price point.
    I can't wait to see what you do with it, should definitely be an absolute weapon once it's sorted.

    I have a 2020 KTM 790 R. It had two recalls, both brake related. The dealer was quick and easy. The fuel gauge sending unit failed, dealer repair under warranty. That is all I have ever had go wrong. Those were all in the first year. I have ridden it hard off-road. Last year I did the red river scramble in KY. 200 miles off-road over three days. I hear the same rattling everyone else talks about, but it's only when I'm in a higher gear than it wants be in. Its a high performance machine that wants to run, not crawl. I wouldn't trade mine for anything. I would say keep an open mind and don't judge a bike if you never owned one.

KTM/Husky/GasGas - they push out the tech and dev faster than anyone which forces them to use Joe Public as the testing environment so it's the tradeoff you make with them. Get the latest and greatest now or wait a few years for all the bugs to be worked out and then have it released like other manufacturers do. I hate their reliability but they make some killer bikes to ride so best be handy with the tools if you want one.

    Very nice Video. Need to complain about the dealership though. If they know there is a potential Issue with the Radiator hose clamp why dont they simply exchange it with a solid one to ratchet on for example? They surely got them around in bulk, and thats a cheap article. Why send people on their way with a known issue that's so easy to fix?

    I have been keeping an eye on this model since they announced it. But, I am not sure I like it enough to trade my V85 TT on it. Hoping this summer I can get more seat time, depending on health things. (edit) Snow... Where I live we can see snow up to June 1st. Even all summer at altitude. I was up at Sylvan lake one July 4th in a snow storm. That is just over 6000 feet.

      Hey Zurnie! You have a V85TT! I’ve been looking at one for several months now and I’m just about ready to pull the trigger on one. I’m concerned about how good it is off road tho. I’m planning on riding it like a regular adventure bike. What do you think!? And what about first gear? Is it low enough to go off-road? Thanks!

    "It's mid April! We shouldn't be having snow here!" Clearly, Dork, y'ain't been to Chicago. Here in the 312, there's a nonzero chance of snow basically from Halloween to 4/20.

  • @motoman7445
    @motoman7445 2 года назад

    You called it Dork. The reason they say these bikes aren't as reliable as the Japanese bikes is because they aren't. Fabulous motorcycles none the less. Half way through i was thinking the Yamaha was in trouble, then i was quickly brought to my senses. It's still the T7 for me. I dont need all that fancy traction control. 🤥 Can't wait to see what unfolds with these bikes.

  • @AKAOmnivore
    @AKAOmnivore 2 года назад

    I've never had a traction control motorcycle, it seems useful. (I have it on my slingshot, but its not a motorcycle, no matter what the plate says :-D) That said, weight and momentum equate to some enormous pucker moments on these bigger bikes, I could see things going south real quick after the traction control gave some unwarranted confidence and over-riding those conditions. Just talking from experience, I have found, for me, once a heavy bike breaks traction and heads sideways, you better have your A game on. (At this point in life my A game has left the building) I'm guessing traction control is great going straight, but won't help you towards the sides. I don't know to be honest, it will be interesting how you evaluate it moving forward.

    It's best to check all the nuts and bolts and clamps on any new bike. They're assembled by humans and they miss things now and then. I don't even like to ride one home from the dealer without checking it out. Particularly European bikes keep an eye on all fasteners on a regular basis.

    The Pirelli str’s are actually bloody awesome tyres on the road and gravel, but they are in no way designed for mud and wet grass (they are a 80/20 tyre). But as a oem fitted tyre 👍🏻thats why many other adv bikes have them as oem too.

      I disagree. I bought those tires based on rave reviews and while they're they're really good on pavement when it's warm they're treacherous when it gets cold. By cold I mean below 40f or 5c. Also the rear was far and away the loudest tire I've ever run. Add in the high price and short life and I rate them 2 stars.
