If you don't add wheels to that drawer, then I'd suggest lubricating with hard soap, ski wax or paraffin wax. You've done well for a city boy. Your carpenter and designing skills have come a long way and are much better than mine.

Yah this! I built one here in Scotland but I waxxed the rails of it with some Japanese door wax (the stuff they use for their sliding door grooves) and it helped it come in and out easily, when the wax had rubbed off though it did get a little sticky in place.

In our experience the chicken wire rusts over time and starts to break down. It's also not strong enough to grow vines onto. Within a year the wire all started to break. Hardware cloth is your friend. Our best crop we ever grew around our chicken and duck runs is Jerusalem Artichokes and Butternut squash as well as pumpkins, peas and pole beans.

I have mild anger towards squash and squash-related plants. Ever seen what happens when they take over a 25'x50' garden and a quarter acre of lawn? I think eventually it was like 150lbs of squash from 4 plants. I don't like eating squash, and the plants were my mother's 'gift'. They killed my bush beans, peppers, and onions.

I suggest putting some vinyl sheet flooring on the floor of the house it will make cleaning it much easier. For climbing vines I suggest Nasturtium it's an edible flower that grows on a vine. Kiwi Fruit is another one to try.

    • @Kehy_ThisNameWasAlreadyTaken
      @Kehy_ThisNameWasAlreadyTaken 4 месяца назад +4

Hardy kiwi, not standard kiwi though! Hardy kiwi is a well behaved, self-pollinating vining plant that produces delicious furless grape-sized and looking fruit. Standard kiwi is a freaking menace growing up to 25' a year, requiring both a male and female plant to produce fruit. If you are so lucky as to get fruit, good luck ever getting it to ripen. We had both for 10 years, never ONCE was the standard kiwi fruit ever able to ripen to the point of being edible, despite 10-15 gallons of fruit a year.

Honestly, I would advise to put something on the dome. They are in a pretty enclosed, limited space and birds of prey could still get in, get one of the chickens or hatched chicks, then fly out. I have seen plenty videos of birds of prey perching on enclosure frames and jumping in from it. They dont just swoop down from flight.

Good morning, Mogan and everyone! You might need a tad more ventilation in the coop for summer months, especially.
I used to work with small submarines and am thinking about trying to get an old, retired one to make a coop out of it for my chickens.
    Chicken coops should be fun!
I'm glad you insulated the coop for the winter months! They really need all the warmth they can get in the winter where you live!
I's cover the entire dome in hardware cloth and make a hardware cloth floor underneath, then connect it with pig clips. That'll keep the critters out.

Yes, LOVE the Clucky Dome name! My dad built a geodesic dome over our above-ground swimming pool in the 1970s. He used conduit pipe. This allowed him to make plywood panels that connected to the pipe via pipe straps that went through slits in the plywood. He did two layers, I think, of plywood, with both up and down facing triangles in each layer. The up pointing bottom layer had hinged windows that he could open to see out. He had our barbecue in the pool yard under the dome and so could skinny dip in there, drink beers, float past the barbecue and baste the meat with his beer, and exit the dome with a plate of meat for dinner (after putting his trunks back on). He painted the plywood with Rustoleum silver paint. Yes, it was quite the sight in rural Michigan!
You may want to zip tie your hardware cloth and chicken wire to the wood to close up some of those gaps. I could see a chicken getting a leg or wing caught in the loosely attached fencing if they can climb, jump, or fly past the bottom layer, or wild birds doing the same, trying to get to the feed.

My first thought was, "did Morgan lay down some strong metal screening below the coop?" Every single person I've ever known who has raised chickens have had their coops raided from below. Whether mink, fox, rodents, and/or raccoons, they'll dig under the coop and tunnel their way to a very exotic meal. Secure all basr screening to sidewall fencing to ensure you eliminate gaps. It's extra work, but it'll save you time, money, and medical bills from all the agita. And it'll save the weird chickens.

For vines on your dome, consider grapes or roses,. Both bear fruit - for people & some animals, & both can be used for other culinary purposes.
Grapes are edible as is & can be used in salads & in cooked recipes too. Then of course, most types of grapes make great jams, jellies & wine. Also grapeleaves can be stuffed with rice & meat, like ground lamb, or rice & herbs or spinach or other veggies.
Roses are wonderful in tea; can be used in potpourie or tinctures, & rose hips are an excellent source of Vitamin C, & can be used in jams & both the flowers & rose hips for fresh or dried flower arrangements. ❤
Both can be heavily pruned, annuallly to restrain their growth as needed. Also both have hardy varieties.
They both have woody, older vines which might help strengthen the dome structure to prevent it from collapsing when the wood begins to rot, if not treated/sealed/painted over the years, & under heavy snow!
My daughter had friends in the Boston area who'd built a big geo-dome in someone's back yard which was a great place to accommodate huge gatherings!

I love the cluckyball! Seems like it won't be mobile; we'll see how that goes. You set up your brooder and have so many spaces to keep chicks. Weird chicken chicks are worth more than normal ones. You know that "broody hens" can often have a terrible survival rate. It looks like she may have cracked one of those eggs while you locked her in there. Consider taking "easy wins" (like hatching eggs in the incubator) while your flock is still so small. Love to see the farm as always!

Haven't you learned? Chicken fencing does not work to keep predator s out. Get hardware cloth. Everything else is pretty cool.

For the plants on the posts your could use grapes, willow trees (Especially for structural support & insulation,) or grapes & squash.

i had an ornametntal passionfruit that grew crazy near my chicken coop and grew all over the top. in summer it has beautiful white/purple flowers and grows a little orange fruit. not great for eating but the chickens enjoyed them :) it'd reduce the temp inside the walk-in so well

Hops should do very well on your dome, and chickens love to eat the leaves. I have some growing on a trellis in my coop, and I have to have the bottom of the plant protected with chicken wire, or my birds would prune it until the plant died 😅

Whenever something is elevated as you did with the bricks you're inviting critters. Rodents for sure. Lay a bed of gravel and some hardware cloth is best.
You improved at this stuff quite a bit.
In my head I've designed a coop but on wheels that I can move so they always have fresh grass.

Your chicken coop design looks great, but I wonder if it might have been a better idea to use some sort of hard, smooth laminate board such as melamine for sliding surfaces which might otherwise tend to freeze up over time.

Adding to the other comments with very valid concerns: maybe also add some kind of panels on a section of the dome top to give the chicken some shading?

The wood working skills have come a long way Morgan.
Looking flash and insulating the weird chicken house is a good move 👍.
Could have put a hinge at the back of the nesting boxes so when you want to clean it out the back slat just folds down to just scrape straight it out instead of having to scoop it out.
You should hit up dewalt for sponsorship, who dosent like free tools.. lol
Borage, Dill and Nasturtiums are really good plants for chicken health.

To be nitpicking a geodesic dome is not half a Bucky ball. The dome is made of triangles and half a Buckyball would be like a split soccer ball :)
